Author's Notes:

It's been a couple of months, eh? Yeah, I got unbelievably stuck on this story and I admit I am not fully out of the block yet. I don't think I will manage to finish this one in time for the next Advent/December Challenge/whatever (and yes, I will nevertheless participate in that one), but that's fine. The process of writing this fic has taught me some new things. I'm still glad to tell this story and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Kurt is waiting in front of his favourite store. The perk of living in New York is knowing where to go when you want to buy something cute without being swarmed by tourists.

After a while, Blaine appears around the corner. He looks well-dressed, since he came back from a meeting, and Kurt appreciates the sight of him.

“Looking good,” he says with a smile when Blaine’s in earshot.

“I’m returning the compliment,” Blaine’s smile matches his.

But when Blaine’s more up close, Kurt can see that Blaine looks a bit worn down.

“Did the meeting not go well?” Kurt asks with a frown.

“Oh. No. It didn’t,” Blaine answers flatly, “But that’s not what’s up. Quinn called.”

Kurt’s frown deepens. He knows that Blaine and Quinn are fine. But then Blaine explains that Quinn’s suggested they come out to their parents and Kurt gets what’s put Blaine in this mood. It’s the coming out thing again.

You never stop coming out, huh.

“I want to do this,” Blaine says before Kurt can ask and Kurt nods. That’s the important part. “I agree that this is a great moment, but now this will be waiting for me when I come home. Well, time to go shopping, then.”

Then Blaine lets out a sigh.

“What?” Kurt asks.

“Just… Do I also need to buy a gift for Judy, Quinn’s mom? I always do, but I’m about to tell her that het daughter broke up with me!”

“I suppose a ‘parting gift’ isn’t a great idea? A gift with the message ‘Surprise, your daughter and I are both gay’?”

Blaine snorts.

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Let’s just see if we come across something, huh?” Kurt suggests. He’s eager to start. If there’s one thing Kurt loves, it’s shopping, and he’s so excited to show Blaine around some more. And he’s excited to buy something with Blaine, to remember their time here.

“After you!” Blaine bows and Kurt laughs.

A couple of hours later, Kurt and Blaine are trotting around town with bags filled with goodies. Kurt took Blaine to a small store where a lot of small creators can sell their stuff. Blaine’s bought some handmade soap for Quinn, since she loves wellness and beauty a lot. He also bought a new necklace for her, since she also loves wearing necklaces, mostly pearls.

Kurt helped Blaine with picking something for Denise, since both of them were sort of reaching in the dark. Kurt’s never met Denise and Blaine’s only just gotten to know her. They know that Denise also likes yoga, so they bought special yoga socks.

Kurt had no idea such thing existed.

Blaine also bought some goodies for his family. He bought a touristic magnet for his brother, since he collects them, and some funny drinking glasses for his parents. It’s not as if his parents never travel to New York. After all, Blaine’s dad has business here. That’s why Blaine didn’t want to get a tacky souvenir for them. Kurt knew a fun glass and ceramic shop and Blaine loved it.

“When I tell them about you, I want them to know you helped me pick these out.”

Now they’re on a way to a small local bakery to eat pastries. Kurt gets his favourite cheesecake and Blaine has four mini cupcakes in front of him.

“Tell me more about this place,” Blaine says. He’s been asking Kurt that every now and then, since he knows Kurt’s taking him to places that Kurt personally likes.

“It’s not Starbucks,” is the first thing that comes out of Kurt’s mouth and the two of them laugh. True, this bakery also serves great coffee. Then Kurt tells Blaine that he simply found this little bakery on his way home from classes.

“Oh, yeah, we’re close to NYADA, right?” Blaine says.

Kurt nods.

“Wait, you had a meeting with an advisor today. How did that go?” Blaine asks.

“Alright,” Kurt says, “I have handed in a special request regarding my upcoming internship. My advisor will look at it, although I don’t think she believes my motivations are in order.”

He’s not lying. He’s just fully saying the truth.

Blaine frowns.

“You’re one of the most motivated people I know,” he says immediately, “You even moved to the other side of the world to learn more about your work. Rachel didn’t do that.”

Rachel?

Oh, right. Rachel. Blaine must’ve picked up that Kurt feels a bit weird about Rachel flaunting the fact that she has an agent. It’s true, but he isn’t jealous of her. He’s more annoyed by her superiority complex, but it can be a great cover.

“Well, maybe my advisor picked up on the jealousy. I guess being jealous of your roommate isn’t a great motivation for doing something wild,” Kurt says smoothly, and now he is lying. He does feel a bit bad for lying to Blaine, but it’s all to prevent Blaine from getting his hopes up, especially since his advisor didn’t sound too certain about everything.

“Rachel does her own thing,” Blaine laments.

She does. She’s barely been at home in this week, because she is so busy. She got a callback for one big role, or so she says.

And she is avoiding Blaine, who is staying at their apartment. Kurt has no idea what’s up with that, and neither does Blaine. It’s not important, though. It’s not stopping them from enjoying their time together.

The last five days have gone by in a flash. It is weird to think that Blaine’s already flying back in two days. Tomorrow they are going to catch a show on Broadway. It’s the second one, but this one was planned in advance. Then the day after, Blaine’s flying home late in the evening. Blaine specifically chose a late flight so that they had time during the day.

And then it’s over.

Kurt needs to savour what they have now. And he needs to savour this cheesecake.

After they finish their food, they take the train back to the apartment. They can drop their shopping haul in Kurt’s room. The apartment is also empty and they make great use of that. Kurt can finally watch his trashy reality TV shows on high volume without Rachel yapping about it interrupting her vocal warm-ups. After two episodes of cringe-inducing but addicting romance, Kurt decides to show Blaine that he can do better than that. He climbs on Blaine and kisses him. Blaine’s a bit surprised, but he clearly doesn’t mind.

Kurt’s about to suggest they move to his room when the door opens.

Santana is stood in the doorframe with Dani her.

Shit, maybe they should’ve skipped the trashy reality TV.

“Damnit. Guess this place wasn’t empty after all.”

“Leave!” Kurt yells and Blaine just lies back, looking annoyed at the interruption.

“I will, I will,” she says with a laugh. She turns to her girlfriend. “I suppose it’s easier to kick out your roommates. Blaine here is only a guest, so they need to cherish every precious lovey-dovey moment.”

It’s true, but does she have to say it to Dani like that?

“Actually,” Santana turns back to Kurt and Blaine, “I was meaning to ask you something. Dani, I and some other folks are going to the Village tonight. Wanna join?”

Kurt looks down to Blaine, who looks confused.

“Gay bar,” Santana adds for clarification.

“Do you…” Kurt trails off. He hadn’t planned on going out, but it’s Kurt’s go-to club and it would fit perfectly into this glimpse into Kurt’s life in New York. But it’s also a gay bar. Back in Ljubljana, Blaine didn’t feel like going to those places.

But now, Blaine nods.

“Sure,” he answers. Kurt raises an eyebrow, but Blaine just smiles.

Huh. Maybe Kurt’s overthinking it.

“Cool,” Santana replies, “Usual time, Kurt?”

“We’ll be there,” Kurt says back.

Santana nods and ushers Dani out of the living room towards the front door.

“Oh, and use protection,” Dani yells back before the door closes behind Santana with a loud thud.

Kurt sighs. He can see why Santana and Dani fit together.

They wait for the front door to also open and close. They’ll see those two later today, but now the apartment is empty again and Kurt leans in to kiss Blaine.
