Kurt and Blaine meet somewhere in public, so that both don’t have to travel all the way in public. Kurt suggests the Spotlight Diner near Broadway, which Blaine thinks is an odd location, since it’s quite loud. And every now and then the waiters start singing. Blaine appreciates the music, but he definitely would’ve chosen a different place.
Kurt’s already learnt some of the basic conversational sentences, so Blaine helps Kurt with pronunciation, but it’s really difficult when one waitress keeps interrupting them.
“We’re fine, thank you,” Blaine forces himself to say when the waitress comes around for the fifth time in fifteen minutes.
“Are you sure?”
Kurt rolls his eyes. Apparently he has no problem being rude to waitstaff, and Blaine’s heart takes a hit. He can’t be interested in someone who treats-
“Rachel, you’re not being slick.”
“Kurt!” the waitress, Rachel, says back, “Don’t- you blew our cover!”
Never mind. It’s clear that they know each other. The heartache ebbs away. Good. Blaine couldn’t handle it.
Kurt sighs, but there’s a familiar, knowing tone.
Rachel harrumphs and walks away.
“Sorry about that,” Kurt says to Blaine, “Het spijt me.”
Yes, Blaine is definitely encouraging Kurt to throw in some Dutch every now and then.
“Het is oké. What just happened, though?” Blaine asks and he nods towards the direction Rachel’s gone in.
“My overprotective roommate,” Kurt shrugs, “When she found out I invited a total stranger from the internet in our house, she threw a fit. And then she demanded that she would be able to see you in real life. I told her yes, but I expected her to be more subtle about it.”
He says the last part very loudly, while looking directly at Rachel.
Rachel unfortunately sees this as an invitation to bother them yet again and Blaine silently promises himself to never agree to teaching Kurt at the Spotlight Diner again.
“I have the right to be concerned,” she says and she shoots Blaine a nasty look. Kurt groans. “No, I am! A guy on the internet posts an ad that says that he can speak every language in the world? Can you believe that? That’s not humanly possible.”
Well, she’s not wrong.
It is definitely out of this world.
Literally.
“I’m just a polyglot,” Blaine says. Nothing extra-terrestrial going on here!
Kurt nods.
“And he’s here to teach me, so please, could you let him do his job? He’s being paid by the hour and you’re taking away our time together.”
Rachel gives a decisive nod and walks away with another word.
“Het zonnetje in huis,” Blaine says sarcastically, “She must be fun to be around.”
“She usually is, I swear!” Kurt says, “But she can just be a bit much.”
“Shall we continue?” Blaine asks. He has a mission after all. Rachel was an unwelcome interruption. “Since you already know some basics, I thought it’d be a good idea to move away from basic introductions and continue to something more detailed. After all, you’re going to meet long-lost family, and they might be interested in your life.”
Kurt nods understandingly.
“And I’d like to ask them questions as well,” he adds. Kurt opens a notebook. It’s time to learn some Dutch!
