“And this is Blaine,” Kurt said smiling at him. The guy walked over to him and held his hand out.
“This is my step-brother, Finn,” Kurt said. Blaine shook his hand calming down a little more. They got into the car with Kurt and him in the back seat. Kurt squeezed his hand smiling at him.
“Don't be so nervous. You'll survive,” Kurt said. Blaine looked at him still nervous. The last time he'd officially met parents was when he was still in high school. He hadn't done this in years and he was actually worried.
“My dad and Carole will love you...don't worry. My dad may be wary at first but he'll warm up to you instantly,” Kurt said. Blaine sighed and leaned over and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. When they pulled into a driveway he looked out at the small house. It was very simple with gray siding and white accents. He got out and met Kurt at the front of the car and they got their luggage. They walked up to the house and Finn opened the door.
“Finn's in for the weekend like us. He lives down in Kentucky,” Kurt said. They walked into the house and his nerves only got worse. It was a warm inviting house and he liked it already. A middle-aged man and a woman walked into the living room. The woman hugged Finn and then ran to Kurt. She hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. He smiled as Kurt turned to look at him.
“Carole...Dad, this is Blaine Anderson. My boyfriend,” Kurt said. Blaine beamed on the inside at the introduction. Kurt saying he was his boyfriend made him very happy and he loved hearing the title. Carole came up to him and hugged him and kissed his cheek.
“Welcome to the family, Blaine,” she said smiling.
“Thank you, it's great to finally meet you,” he said. Then, Kurt's father was in front of him. He reached out to shake his hand and the straight face of Burt Hummel turned into a smile.
“It's nice to finally meet you Blaine. I've heard a lot about you from Kurt,” Burt said.
“It's nice to meet you, too. Kurt's told me a lot about you too,” Blaine said. They made their way into the kitchen to sit down for dinner. Blaine sat beside Kurt and Finn sat opposite of him. Carole placed the bowls on the table. She had made baked chicken and salad. She gave Finn and Burt a beer and looked to Kurt and Blaine.
“Would you like a soda or water Blaine?” she asked kindly as she set a glass of water for Kurt and Burt on the table.
“Yes, please. Thank you,” he replied. He looked to Kurt questioningly.
“I told them about everything...I hope you're okay with that,” Kurt said. Blaine looked up at Kurt's father worried but he wasn't even looking at them. Carole set the glass in front of him and then took her seat.
“That's fine...thank you,” he said to Kurt. They started to eat and conversed about how everything was going. Finn was currently working as an assistant coach for a high school in Kentucky. Burt was asking him questions and when that ended they turned to Kurt.
“Still with Rachel?” Finn asked.
“Still am. It's gotten bearable though,” Kurt said looking over at Blaine.
“How's progress with everything?” Burt asked.
“It's going smoothly. We're going to finish recording in the next few weeks and then we'll decide tracks, release date, all of that stuff. I think it'll be done within a year.”
“Good! So, are you as good as Kurt says?” Burt asked him. Blaine looked over at Kurt who was just smiling at him like he hadn't said anything.
“Want to sing for us?” Carole asked excited.
“Um...”
“Please?” Kurt said. Blaine sighed and nodded as he took another bite of his chicken. As they finished up he thought of what he could sing and decided on a song.
“You know I can't say no to you,” Blaine said.
“Do you happen to have a guitar?” he asked later on when they finished eating. Kurt led him to a back room. He opened the door and led Blaine in. In the corner sat a guitar case.
“It was my mom's. I learned to play when I was younger but it's been a long time.”
Kurt grabbed it and opened it up. Inside sat a guitar in pretty much perfect condition. Kurt pulled it out and held it out to him. It would need tuning but could do with it. He sat on the bed in the room and started to tune it. Kurt sat next to him and placed a hand on his thigh.
“You can have her guitar if you would like it. It's only going to sit here and do nothing so why don't you take it?” Kurt suggested. Blaine looked up at him surprised.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Of course!”
“Then I'd love to play your Mom's guitar,” Blaine said smiling. Kurt leaned over and kissed him gently and looked into his eyes.
“Hurry up!” Kurt said getting up and slinking out of the room. When he was happy with the guitar he tested out the song. It was working perfectly and he decided to go out. The group was sitting in the living room talking. He sat on the chair next to Kurt's and put the sheet music on the table to see it.
“What are you going to play?” Carole asked.
“It's called You've Got A Way,” Blaine replied.
“Go ahead, kid. Let's hear it,” Burt said. Blaine nodded and cleared his throat. He started to slowly strum the guitar.
“You've got a way with me. Somehow you got me to believe in everything that I could be. I've gotta say. You really got a way. You've got a way it seems. You gave me faith to find my dreams you'll never know just what that means. Can't you see...you got a way with me,” Blaine sang looking at Kurt. His bright blue eyes gazed at him with love.
“It's in the way you want me. It's in the way you hold me. The way you show me just what love's made of. It's in the way we make love,” Blaine said blushing at the last part. Kurt smiled a little more and leaned over to him resting his hand on Blaine's thigh. He was not doing that here!
“You've got a way with words. You get me smiling even when it hurts. There's no way to measure what your love is worth. I can't believe the way you get through to me. It's in the way you want me. It's in the way you hold me. The way you show me just what love's made of. It's in the way we make love,” Blaine sang out looking at Kurt. He was pouring his heart and soul into this song for Kurt.
“Oh, how I adore you, like no one before you. I love you just the way you are! It's in the way you want me. It's in the way you hold me. The way you show me just what love's made of. It's in the way we make love...it's just the way you are...” Blaine sang finishing the song. Kurt's arms instantly wrapped around him and he was kissing him.
“That was beautiful...” Carole said. Burt looked at him impressed and smiled at him kindly.
“That was really good, Blaine. Looks like Kurt did good,” Burt said.
“He's perfect dad,” Kurt said smiling at him still. Blaine leaned over and kissed him quickly and looked back at Burt. Blaine got up and walked back to the room. He put the guitar back into its case gently. Kurt walked into the room and put his arms around Blaine.
“You don't know how happy you make me,” Kurt said.
“Kurt...you don't know how happy you make me...I love you so much,” Blaine said.
“I love you too. Come on...let's get to bed. I want to take you somewhere to meet someone tomorrow.”
The next day him and Kurt were in Kurt's old car from when he was home. His father kept it at the garage usually and would occasionally use it but it was for Kurt's use when he was back in town. They drove down the highway and then made a turn onto a side road. Kurt drove all the way back until a cemetery came into view. Blaine looked at Kurt nervously. What the hell were they here for?
“You know Carole isn't my mother. I remember telling you that.”
“Yeah...you never said anything more. Why are we here?” Blaine asked.
“Come with me,” Kurt said. He got out and followed him through the grass. This place was bringing back some memories he didn't want. He ran into Kurt not noticing he stopped.
“Are you okay?” Kurt asked concerned.
“Just...memories...” he replied simply.
“I'm sorry! I wasn't thinking when I brought you here. We can go if you want,” Kurt said.
“It's okay,” Blaine said.
“When I was...seven my mom got sick. I didn't understand at first but she had cancer. A year later she passed away. I lived for years with my dad and then he met Carole 8 years later. I was okay with it but it still hurt a little bit that he was remarrying after so long. He was happy though so why should I interfere with that?” Kurt stated. Blaine looked down and saw a headstone that said 'Caroline Hummel, loving wife and mother'. The woman was only 28 when she passed. Blaine looked at Kurt surprised but he was looking down at the stone.
“Meet Blaine mom...I know you can see him from wherever you are but I thought I'd bring him here with me. He's going to be big one day. He's already a superstar in my eyes.”
Blaine looked at him lovingly. He couldn't imagine what it's like to lose a mother before you barely got to know her but he knew what it was like to lose someone you love dearly. He squeezed Kurt's hand tighter as they stood there.
“I wish I could have met her. I should thank her though. She gave me a wonderful man,” Blaine said. Kurt looked over at him with tears in his eyes.
“I miss her so much. I know she's watching over me and I know I'll never forget her. She's always been a big influence on me though. She loved music as much as me. She would always sing to me. I missed hearing her voice when she got sick,” Kurt said. Blaine looked over at him sympathetically.
“Let's go get some lunch and then go see your parents,” Kurt said. Blaine nodded and they walked away, holding hands, back to the car.
