Blaine ran out of the apartment in a rush. He had cleaned and sorted stuff and then fell asleep on the couch and woke up late. Now he was running late for work. He was doing his last set for a few weeks tonight and he was supposed to sing his first single tonight. Kurt would already be at the coffee shop waiting with a coffee and biscotti for him. As the cabs passed by he contemplated taking one but he didn't have the will to do it. So he walked as fast as he could down the busy street to the little shop he worked at.
He opened the door and walked to the stage setting his guitar in the usual spot. It'd been a few weeks since he was out of the hospital and he hadn't felt this good in a while. Him and Kurt were happy and had fixed the apartment to their liking. He hadn't looked for Sebastian's ring since it had disappeared. He did his best and listened to Kurt in agreeing it was time to let go and move on.
He walked back to where Kurt was sitting and sat next to him kissing his cheek. Kurt turned smiling and twined their fingers together. Kurt rested his head on Blaine's shoulder and sighed. Blaine pressed a light kiss to his hair and smiled.
“How was work?” he asked as he took a bite of the biscotti.
“The usual...we might have somebody new to sign on but Rachel isn't sure. She doesn't want to sign just anybody.”
“You signed me. I was just anybody,” Blaine said.
“But you actually have potential. This girl is good but we don't know if she's got it. If she's got what it takes to make it big.”
“I'm sure she does. Is she young?”
“College freshman,” Kurt replied. Bliane checked his watch and sighed. Kurt sat up and looked at him encouragingly.
“Is it your first song or are you saving it?”
“I don't know...I have two from the CD I want to sing.”
“I see...well...go knock 'em dead,” Kurt said kissing him once more. He stood up as he grabbed his coffee and made his way to the front. The shop was already filling up with people and he still had a few minutes before starting. He tuned his guitar and waited for six to roll around. He looked at the clock and started to slowly strum.
“Hi guys...you don't know how much it means that you all turn out every week. Thanks to my producer I'll be coming in with some newer songs for a while. I'm going to start with one we just finished as a demo and plan on recording next week. I like it and I think it's going to do good on the CD. This is called Thankful,” he said. Normally, the song was a duet but he didn't tell Kurt he was singing it.
“I was a lost wandering soul...just looking for a reason to live in this big wide world. Then one day I saw you. You stood like an angel in front of me. You made the sun shine and I didn't think it could get better...but it did. I didn't think I'd ever be able to know you but then you went and changed that. You protected me in my darkest times and you brought back the light and now I just want you to know,” Blaine started the song. The song was written by him and Kurt and when it was put together it worked for them.
“I'm thankful for all you've done and I can't wait to give it all back to you. You've done nothing but heal my broken heart and help me see all of the colors that had turned to gray in my life. You've shown me what it's like to open up and love once more, see all the things that I had been missing out on. And I just want you to know I'm thankful...for you,” Blaine sang smiling at Kurt. Kurt stood up and made his way to Blaine as he continued to strum the guitar. Kurt's voice started to flow through the cafe and he couldn't help but smile.
“I was with him and thought I was happy...then I saw you. I never thought you'd be more than you already are but you proved me wrong. I thought he was going to my forever but then his true colors showed and I knew it was all wrong. You saved me from myself and from him and I couldn't thank you more. You showed me what love really is and how I deserve to be treated. You protected me in my darkest times and you brought back the light and now I just want you to know,” Kurt sang as he joined Blaine on the stage. Kurt pulled up a stool and sat next to him.
“I'm thankful for all you've done and I can't wait to give it all back to you. You've done nothing but heal my broken heart and help me see all of the colors that had turned to gray in my life. You've shown me what it's like to open up and love once more, see all the things that I had been missing out on. And I just want you to know I'm thankful...for you,” Kurt sang. The last verse they both started to sing together.
“You're the sun, the moon, the stars. You're everything to me now and I can't imagine being away from you.”
“I can't imagine a day without you and your smile,” Blaine sang looking over at him.
“I can't picture my future without you there by my side. You're all I've wanted and more...” Kurt sang by himself.
“You're all I've been looking for...thank you for saving me...” Blaine finished. They both picked up in the chorus blending together to finish the song.
“I'm thankful for all you've done and I can't wait to give it all back to you. You've done nothing but heal my broken heart and help me see all of the colors that had turned to gray in my life. You've shown me what it's like to open up and love once more, see all the things that I had been missing out on. And I just want you to know I'm thankful...for you.”
They sang the chorus once more and then Blaine ended the song. The group of people clapped for them. Nobody seemed to give them disgusting looks or walked out and for that he really was thankful. Kurt smiled over at him and then walked off the stage. People high fived him and said he did really good. Blaine went through the next few songs. Some were covers and some he usually did every other week. The last song was his first single.
“So, this week my new song is supposed to premiere on the radio. This is the song that I've been holding out on but now I want to let you all hear it. This is called Sideline...I wrote back when I didn't have a chance with this amazing person and now I have them,” he said. He had his guitar and some of the guys from his band had come to the show to help with this song. They had all hooked up and started to play.
“Sometimes life comes fast, no time to think just react. Watching it from the sideline, I think nothing can harm me here. Everything is safe this way. There's no pain...no hurt...no wishing. Just walking by day to day. But then I saw your face. Like an angel had landed in front of me and you weren't going away. But you have him and I'm just me...but I wish I could hold you. How much longer til you are mine? Faces stay the same. Hearts grow apart, when love is in vain. Stuck with the memories. One day it'll be you and me...” he started.
“Watching the world from the sideline, you make me stop in real time. I'm just biding my time until you realize I'm here. I had to watch him hold your hand and make you smile. I had to watch him hurt you over and over. Say it out loud, I'm sick of being on the sideline. On the sideline. Watching the world from the sideline, how long until you're mine? Saying it out loud already, I'm sick of being on the sideline,” he sang with backing vocals from the band. He had never been so happy to perform a song. This was his break. This song could change his life.
“We talk everyday and everytime I want to say please hear me out. Please don't leave me alone. I want you to myself but he still has you. I can't get enough of the smile that I'm able to put on your face. Oh...please don't run and hide. The truth is inside. Don't wanna watch from the sideline I just want you to be mine. Every time you walk away and take his hand, another part of my heart slowly breaks and I...I can't stand here one more second...” Blaine sang putting all he had into it. He wanted them to hear the song at it's best. People had cameras on him. He wasn't surprised but it felt good.
Saying it out loud already, I'm sick of being on the sideline!”
The band played on as he stopped singing. He got ready for the next part and then to finish it.
“I have the chance, I'm gonna take it, I'm gonna run away with it! I'm gonna take you in my arms and hold you close and never...let...go. Don't you know...I love you so...” the band slowed down as he hit the last part. He strummed lightly on his guitar as he picked up the chorus.
“Watching the world from the sideline, you make me stop in real time and biding my time until you realize I'm here. Say it out loud, I'm sick of being on the sideline. On the sideline. Watching the world from the sideline, how long until you're mine? Saying it out loud already, I'm sick of being on the sideline!”
He sang the chorus two more times and then ended the song singing one last line.
“On the sideline...on the sideline...not going to be stuck on the sideline much longer...”
As the song ended people stood and clapped for him. Him and the band took a bow and then started to pack up. People were coming up to him and asking him about his songs and CD. Many people wanted to actually pre-order copies now. Most of them were girls who probably wished they had a chance with him but would never get it. He smiled and said that when pre-orders started he'd be sure to be back to the cafe.
“You were amazing up there tonight.”
Blaine turned around to see Kurt standing behind him with a huge smile on his face. In his hands was a single red rose. Kurt held it out to him and kissed him gently. Blaine took the rose and smiled at him. When he was all packed up he took Kurt's hand and they walked out into the city. They made their way slowly to their apartment.
“So, how do you think the song is going to do?” Blaine asked.
“I think it's going to do just fine. You'll get your name out there and then we can choose another song to release.”
“I wish we could put Thankful as a single...”
“Only if you did it with Quinn. It may have been taken good back there but outside of that place is a whole other world.”
“I know...I just wish they could all know who you are to me.”
“Well, back there they do. When everything gets going it'll need to be kept under wraps but we can do it. We work together so there will be nothing to it,” Kurt said.
“I hope so...”
“Everything will be fine. Don't worry,” Kurt said kissing his cheek. They walked into the apartment and Blaine set his guitar case in the corner. He took Kurt in his arms and kissed him passionately. Kurt's arms wrapped around his neck and he moved down to kiss Blaine's neck.
“I love you...” Blaine said. Kurt's movement stilled as he laid his head on Blaine's shoulder. Blaine bit his bottom lip worried that Kurt wouldn't say it back. Kurt looked up at him from the position and smiled.
“I love you too Blaine,” he replied placing a kiss on Blaine's neck.
End Notes: Thanks for reading! I think a chapter or two remains now. :)
