He opened the door to the bar and went back to his usual seat. Blaine wasn't there yet so he ordered a beer while he waited. After a while of sitting in silence and thinking, Blaine sat down next to him. He seemed tense and looked upset as he ordered a beer for himself.
“Is everything okay?” Kurt asked once he had his beer and took a long drink. Blaine looked over at him and sighed.
“It was a rough day...they had me all over the place at the firm. I'm supposed to be helping on one case but they put me on another and then they moved me to another. I work with one divorce attorney and the week's just been stressful.”
“What happened?”
“I was put on three cases to help out with but really they just want me to observe. I don't know if I want to stay on divorce cases though. I watched my parents go through one while I was still in high school and after my failed relationship I don't think I could watch others fail,” Blaine replied. He thought back to what had happened to him and how he had met Blaine here that night. It must have brought back some memories.
“You've been with somebody before?” Kurt asked. Blaine was good looking and a sweetheart! How could his relationship fail?
“We were together for a few years and we just grew apart. Between our internships and school work we just grew distant. After one night of us fighting non-stop we walked away from each other. I came here to cool off and when I went back we talked. We agreed to break up and if we were ever brought to one another again then we were meant to be,” Blaine said, seeming to get lost in his memories.
“Have you talked to him since?”
“No...well, I've seen him around but with somebody else. I figured it would happen but today I saw his announcement in the paper that he was getting married. It really hit me in the face saying it's time for me to move on,” Blaine said shrugging his shoulders.
“You haven't moved on?”
“No. How do you move on from the first man you loved? From the first everything in your life? It's hard and I still haven't done it.”
Kurt looked down at the beer in his hands and took a drink. He needed to move on too but how could he? Ryan wasn't his first love or any of his firsts but how do you let go of being left at the altar?
“Are both of the attorney's at the place divorce attorney's?”
“No. Wright is the divorce attorney and Shiffer is a defense attorney. I'd rather prosecute but I'm okay with defense.”
“Sounds interesting. What made you go into law?”
“Just something I always liked. My mother was a very popular district attorney and I always watched her cases.”
“Sounds fun,” Kurt said smiling. Blaine nodded and ordered another beer.
“Beer can't drown away all of your problems,” Kurt said.
“This is one of those days that requires a shit load of beer,” Blaine said raising his bottle and smiling at Kurt. Kurt remembered the first time he'd talked to Blaine and had told him the same exact thing. He laughed and shook his head.
“You're weird.”
“You have no idea...” Blaine replied smiling. Blaine put his beer down and looked over at Kurt. He looked at him confused until Blaine finally spoke.
“I've been contemplating this all week and I think I'm doing the right thing...”
“What?” Kurt asked confused.
“Would you go out for dinner with me one night?”
Those were the words he feared hearing the most. He didn't want that from Blaine! He just wanted a friend to lean on right now. He looked down at his half empty beer and felt like throwing it. Instead, he put some money on the bar and stood up. He looked into Blaine's hazel eyes that looked confused but the hurt was evident. He shook his head feeling the tears sting at the corners of his eyes. He turned and fled out of the building and to his apartment.
He looked back to make sure Blaine wasn't behind him. When he didn't see the familiar face he walked into his complex and up to his apartment. The ride on the elevator was quiet and lonely and that's just how he liked it. He walked out into the hallway and down to his place. The apartment was dark and quiet without Ryan there anymore.
He locked up and laid down on the couch. He turned the television on trying to get his mind off what happened. He heard his phone buzzing on the coffee table. He looked down and saw Blaine's name on his screen. He turned the phone off and continued to watch some stupid show he didn't even pay attention to because Blaine's face kept popping up in his head.
