She left him at his complex and continued down the street. He made his way up to his apartment and put his bags down in his bedroom. He went into his closet and opened the bag he had a shirt and sweater in for Blaine. His Christmas present for Blaine was now complete and he couldn't wait until next week. He text Blaine that he was leaving soon for the bar and he'd see him soon. Blaine didn't reply but that was usual with his texts about being on his way to the bar.
Kurt changed quickly and grabbed his keys and locked up. As he got into the elevator he checked his pockets for his phone. He cursed himself when he realized he forgot it. When he got out of the elevator he walked out into the busy street. He crossed the street and made his way into the bar. He made his way back to Blaine but stopped in his tracks. His usual seat was taken by some other man. Blaine was talking to him as the other man reached a hand out and put it over Blaine's. Kurt stared at them unable to believe what he was seeing. The other man leaned in for a kiss. Kurt didn't want to see their lips connect so he turned on his heel and fled out of the bar.
He crossed the street when the light changed. He heard his name shouted and turned back to see Blaine running for him. He turned away from him and sped up. He bit his lower lip trying to avoid crying in public. He ran into the complex and for the elevator pressing the button for the doors to close. Blaine couldn't stop him and he looked into the heartbroken hazel eyes as the doors closed. The ride was quiet but he could hear his heart shattering all over again like it had once before.
When the doors opened he made his way swiftly to his door. He blindly unlocked it as the tears finally fell freely. He sank down against his door when he got in and locked it. He ran a hand through his hair and pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. His sobs echoed in the silent apartment. A knock sounded on the door but he didn't move.
“Kurt? Kurt...babe...please. You've got this all wrong.”
“Oh, really? Enlighten me. Who else have you met at the bar and promised to not hurt? Rachel told me I could do better than a bar boy but I said you were more than that. And she even liked you!”
“God...babe, please. Open the door, I'd rather talk face to face.”
“Why? So you can crush me even more?”
“Kurt...that's not why and you know that. Please, open the door?”
Kurt slowly stood up and unlatched the door and opened it for Blaine. He kept his head down so Blaine couldn't see what he'd done to Kurt but then again...Kurt wanted him to know he'd crushed him. Crushed his hopes, his spirit, his will. He turned to Blaine and wrapped his arms around himself.
“Kurt...” Blaine said moving towards him. Kurt put a hand out to stop him and shook his head.
“No...you don't get to hold me anymore. Just...why did I let you in? Get the hell out...”
“You know I wouldn't hurt you. I promised you my heart and Kurt...god dammit you've got a way with me and I could never find that with anybody else...”
“Who was that then?”
“That was my ex...making peace between us.”
“By kissing you?”
“He didn't kiss me...”
“I saw him lean in for a kiss and-”
“And nothing...I pushed him away. He was going to kiss my cheek but I couldn't let him,” Blaine responded. Kurt could see the frustration Blaine was trying to hold back but his walls were crumbling.
“He was holding your hand!”
“He was apologizing for everything he'd done to me. He was telling me he was happy that I had found somebody!”
“I don't want to hear it. You told me you hadn't moved on from him even after all of this time!”
“But, I did move on. I fell in love with you!”
“You wouldn't have let him hold your hand and kiss you if you loved me!”
“I do love you! And he didn't kiss me!”
“Do you love him?” Kurt asked. Blaine instantly seemed smaller at the question. Kurt could see he was fighting back the tears.
“Of course I do.”
“Then get out and don't come back. Go run to him! Go ruin his wedding like mine was ruined! If I hadn't run out that day I wouldn't be going through this...”
“He was my first love, Kurt. He was my first of everything's. There will always be a spot in my heart for him. But you...you come above him. Do you regret meeting me? Do you wish you never had met me?”
“Right now, I do. I knew you were too good to be true...I should have listened to my heart and walked away from you. Go. Go back to your ex or...or whatever he is.”
“I'm not going anywhere without you. I love you, Kurt. I'm not walking out on you, babe.”
“Don't call me that...you don't have the right to call me that anymore. We're done. Get out of my apartment,” Kurt said turning and opening the door. He looked over at Blaine whose hazel eyes looked completely lost and broken. Blaine walked towards the door and stopped by Kurt reaching out to put his hand on his arm but he stopped midway.
“I will always love you. I'm sorry I couldn't be what you wanted...” Blaine said and walked out. Kurt closed the door and latched it up. He walked towards the couch but before he got there he fell to his knees and let the sobs wrack his body. He doesn't know how long he laid there but a knock on his door woke him up.
“Go away, Blaine!” he yelled.
“Kurt? It's Rachel...”
He stood up instantly and moved to the door wincing at the pain in his back from the uncomfortable position he fell asleep in. He unlatched it and opened it up letting Rachel in. As soon as he closed the door Rachel's arms wrapped around him. He felt himself breaking down once more as she led him to the couch.
“Shh...Kurt it's okay.”
“How do you know?”
“He called me and told me. He explained what happened here and why you freaked out on him. I asked him why you think he was cheating and he told me the story at the bar. Kurt...do you really think he'd do that to you? I believe him and I shouldn't right now but I do.”
Kurt stood up and turned to her crossing his arms. She looked up at him concerned and he just shook his head.
“If you're here to preach to me to call him up and forgive him then get out. If you think I'm giving him a chance then get out.”
“Kurt...don't do this. You know he wouldn't hurt you. Would he really get you all of the stuff he's given you if he didn't love you?” Rachel asked. As if on cue, Cobalt came into the living room to Rachel and jumped up onto the couch with her. Kurt looked down at the puppy, now almost a year old and getting bigger, as she stared up at him with big blue eyes.
“He was like all of the rest. Just like Ryan. Smooth talking and promising too much and giving me things. I'm not falling for it again...” Kurt said. Rachel scratched behind Cobalt's big black ears and looked up at Kurt.
“I brought a bottle of wine. Let's have a few glasses...” Rachel suggested. Kurt agreed and sat down as she popped the bottle and poured them glasses. Before he knew it he was tipsy with Rachel and she was making him laugh. When she fell asleep the heartache took over once more. He looked down at his phone to see he had a text from Blaine. It was from a few minutes before Kurt had left for the bar. He didn't bother to run back for it and now wondered what was held in this text. He opened up the text and read it to himself silently, ready to kick himself in the ass and feeling like the biggest ass on the planet.
'Kurt, my ex is here. He really wants to meet you. His fiance is here too. He's a really good guy and I can't wait for them to meet you. See you soon, babe!'
