“Would you stop,” Kurt said as he smoothed Blaine's shirt out. Blaine nodded and sat down on the bed in their hotel room. It was Thanksgiving and Kurt hadn't told his family he was bringing anybody. He even made sure Rachel didn't give it away. They left the hotel room and Kurt got in the car he was borrowing from his dad's shop.
“He's going to love you and you are going to be fine,” Kurt said smiling over at Blaine. Blaine sighed and buckled up as Kurt pulled out. He drove down the highway taking in the changes of Lima over the past few years. Some stores had closed and some had opened.
“I haven't been back this way in a long time...” Blaine said.
“What?” Kurt asked confused.
“I grew up in Westerville. I went to Dalton Academy,” Blaine said shrugging. Kurt looked at him surprised.
“Really?”
“Yeah. I was even the lead of the Warbler's the three years I was there. When I graduated I left Ohio. I said I wasn't going back. As you can tell, my family wasn't always the most accepting. My mom's husband doesn't hate me but my father does. Christian told me he'd fight for my rights alongside me no matter what,” Blaine said.
“So, it's just your grandparents and dad?”
“Them and my Uncle, my dad's brother. My Uncle said if I didn't let go of the charade he'd never speak to me again. I didn't like it but I let him go.”
“I'm sorry,” Kurt replied.
“It's been years. I've gotten over it. Don't worry.”
“Do you want to visit your family today? I can get you a car from my dad's garage.”
“No. They don't know I'm back and my grandfather will be there and I don't feel like facing him today,” Blaine said. Kurt reached over and took Blaine's hand in his and squeezed his land lightly. Blaine smiled over at him and they kept their hands together. Kurt turned down some side streets until he pulled into the driveway of his old house. He turned the car off and looked over at Blaine.
“They're going to love you,” Kurt said encouragingly. He got out of the car and hit the locks. Blaine joined him at the front of the car and took his hand. They walked up to the porch and Kurt knocked on the door. The door opened revealing Rachel smiling broadly.
“They're in the living room. I swear, I haven't said a word,” Rachel said as they walked in. Blaine hugged Rachel and Kurt laughed at Blaine's enthusiasm. They'd become really good friends over the past few months. Kurt led him into the living room. Burt and Carole were sitting together on the couch. Finn was still on duty over seas and wasn't able to be with them for the holiday. Rachel walked over to an empty chair and sat down. Burt looked at him curiously as Blaine came up behind him. He felt Blaine's hands on his lower back and he smiled.
“Kurt?”
“Hi, Dad.”
“Hey, bud. Would you mind explaining who that is behind you?”
“This is Blaine...my boyfriend. Blaine, this is my Dad,” Kurt said looking back at Blaine. Burt stood up and walked over to him and held his hand out to Blaine.
“It's nice to meet you, Blaine,” Burt said.
“It's nice to meet you too, Mr. Hummel.”
“Please, call me Burt. And this is my wife Carole,” Burt said as Carole walked up to him. She held her hand out to Blaine smiling. Kurt put his arms around Blaine's waist and rested his chin on Blaine's shoulder.
“Come on you two, sit down and let's get caught up,” Carole said. Kurt sat down on one end of the couch and Blaine sat next to him. Their fingers laced together and he saw Rachel smile at him. Kurt rolled his eyes laughing and shook his head.
“So, how did you two meet?” Burt asked. Kurt looked over at Blaine and felt his throat close up at the memory.
“Through friends...” Blaine replied. Rachel looked at them confused and shook her head.
“At a bar,” Kurt added.
“At a bar?” Burt asked. Kurt nodded and prayed his father would stop there.
“When? It seems like you two have been together a while,” Burt commented.
“It's been about seven months we've known each other and six dating, now,” Kurt replied.
“But...”
“Burt...I think the boys have had enough of interrogation time,” Carole interrupted. Burt nodded and they all moved into the kitchen for dinner. They talked about little things and got caught up. Kurt hadn't told anybody yet, not even Blaine, the news he was going to share next.
“So, only two of you know the details about this but I have a little announcement. I got a promotion! I'm now an editor with the paper. I'll be working alongside a few other people and we'll be putting the paper together. They said I haven't been there long but I showed the most ambition and I've proven myself over and over for the spot. I'll be training, you can say, for a while and then I'll be working with everybody else as a team.”
“That's great! I'm so proud of you, Kurt!” Burt said smiling over at him. Blaine's arms wrapped around him and a kiss was placed to his temple.
“I told you! I knew you would get the job!” Blaine said excitedly. Kurt laughed and kissed him back.
“I didn't think I'd get it...I'm surprised.”
“You're amazing, Kurt! They would have been stupid to give it to someone else,” Rachel said. The rest of the dinner went uneventful as they made small talk. His father was asking Blaine little questions and Kurt was happy they got along well. When they'd moved into the living room Kurt turned to Blaine.
“Do you want to go see your family?” Kurt asked. Blaine looked at him confused and then shrugged.
“I don't know...I guess. We can stop by for a little bit,” Blaine said. Kurt went into the kitchen to tell his dad but he had left the room as soon as Kurt entered. Confused he turned to Carole and spoke to her.
“We're going to go see Blaine's family. We'll stop by tomorrow for a few hours but our plane leaves Saturday afternoon,” Kurt told her.
“Okay. Be careful out there. Have fun!” Carole replied smiling. As he turned to leave she spoke up again.
“Oh, Kurt? I love Blaine. So does your dad. We're glad you have someone like him. We can tell he makes you happy,” she said. Kurt looked back at her smiling broadly.
“He's amazing, Carole. I could not ask for more,” Kurt said as he walked away. He stopped when he heard voices talking quietly.
“So, you were someone's date to his wedding? And you went to the bar after the whole...incident...and you asked him out after you got to know him? Do you know what he's gone through?” He heard his father ask.
“Yes. I was. After I got to know him I asked him. I told him he didn't have to accept and I'd wait. I don't know what it feels like to be left like that...I wish I did so I could have helped him more. I've been through a break up before with someone. We were together since freshman year of college and we were talking marriage one day but it just ended. Kurt's helped me and I hope I've helped him,” he heard Blaine say.
“Dad, we're serious. Kurt is so much happier with Blaine than he ever was with Ryan. There's this light in his eyes that I haven't seen in a long time and it's thanks to Blaine,” Rachel said.
“Just don't hurt my boy. If you aren't into it then leave him be and let him find someone who is. He's been through too much,” Burt said.
“I know but I don't plan on leaving.”
“Good. You're a good kid, Blaine.”
“Thank you, Mr. Hummel.”
“Burt.”
Kurt chose that time to walk into the living room. He went to Blaine and kissed his cheek.
“Carole knows we're going. Let's head out now. We're about two hours away,” Kurt said. They left the house after Kurt said goodbye to his dad and they got on the highway. Kurt held Blaine's hand the whole drive worried about him.
