“Would you calm down? You're going to be fine. It's not like you've never been to a wedding...”
“I know...I've never been a best man though,” Blaine said. Kurt kissed him and smiled at him. His hazel eyes were shining brightly back at him.
“You'll be fine. I need to go take my seat. I'll see you later,” Kurt said. They were in California for the wedding and Kurt couldn't stand being outside in this heat. Kurt saw Cooper's bride-to-be standing with her father and bridesmaids. Her auburn hair was falling in curls around her face and she already had tears in her eyes. He made his way through the hall down to the room they were holding the ceremony. He took his seat in the back and waited for the ceremony to start.
They all stood as the procession started. Kurt smiled at his boyfriend as he passed. Blaine had a woman, his height surprisingly, on his arm and was looking up at his brother. When they sat, Kurt did his best to pay attention but he kept thinking back on that day. Blaine would understand. It was already almost two months since it happened but it still hurt.
Later that night Blaine joined Kurt at the table he was sitting at. There was a seat for Blaine but he had to stay with Cooper's table most of the time. Kurt was to be sitting with Blaine's family. His parents, grandparents, another sibling, and a cousin. Blaine held his hand as they walked up to the table. A woman with long curly, black hair looked up at him. She had soft hazel eyes and Kurt knew who she was instantly. They stopped at the table and Kurt saw he was sitting next to Blaine's mom.
“Mom, this is Kurt.”
She stood up and hugged him lightly, “It's so nice to finally meet you Kurt. My name's Isabella Anderson, this is my husband Christian.”
“Hello, Kurt,” the man said holding his hand out. Cooper had gotten his blue eyes from their father. Kurt shook his hand and felt the weight lifted off his shoulders. Blaine pulled the chair out for Kurt and he blushed as he sat down.
“Get back out there for the introductions!” his mother scolded Blaine. He kissed her cheek and then Kurt's and left. Blaine's cousin ended up not joining them and sat at another table instead since they had an open seat.
“I haven't seen him so smitten over someone in...a while,” she said clearing her throat.
“He told me about him...believe me...we both haven't been this happy until we met each other,” Kurt replied.
“I'm sorry to hear that dear...” she said putting a hand over his.
“If he's making you happy then I raised him right,” she said. He nodded and looked around the table. The older couple were scowling at him and at Isabella. She leaned over to whisper in his ear.
“Ignore them. They still think in the past and they don't approve of Blaine's life. Don't worry though. I'll protect you and so will Blaine.”
“Thank you...”
“Anytime.”
The night went on like it should have. They were served dinner and then the dancing started. Whenever Blaine came over to Kurt and did anything like kiss him or hold his hand Kurt saw the glares from his grandparents.
“Can I have this dance?”
Kurt turned around surprised and saw Blaine standing above him. One hand was extended to Kurt and a broad smile was on Blaine's face. He put his hand in Blaine's and stood up. They walked out to the dance floor and started to sway to the slow song. It was one Kurt knew and loved. It was called “I Wouldn't Mind” by He Is We.
Once the song ended Blaine had him sit back down and said he had a surprise for him. Blaine kissed him and made his way to the DJ. Blaine pulled a guitar from behind and sat down on a stool in front of the DJ's stand. He started to strum the guitar and he looked at Kurt as he did. His eyes moved to Cooper who nodded to him.
“In the autumn on the ground, between the traffic and the ordinary sounds. I am thinking signs and seasons while a north wind blows through. I watch as lovers pass me by. Walking stories - whos and hows and whys. Musing lazily on love, pondering you. I'll give it time, give it space and be still for a spell. When it's time to walk that way we wanna walk it well,” Blaine started singing. He was playing the guitar with no other back music.
“I'll be waiting for you baby. I'll be holding back the darkest night. Love is waiting til we're ready, till it's right. Love is waiting,” Blaine sang looking at Kurt. Kurt felt the tears building in his eyes and threatening to spill. He watched the couples slowly dancing on the floor.
“It's my caution not the cold. There's no other hand that i would rather hold. The climate changes, I'm singing for the strangers about you. Don't keep time, slow the pace. Honey hold on if you can. The bets are getting surer now that you're my man,” Blaine sang still looking at Kurt. He felt a hand on his arm and looked over at Isbella who had a tissue out for him. He started laughing and that was when the tears fell.
“I'll be waiting for you baby. I'll be holding back the darkest night. Love is waiting til we're ready, till it's right. Love is waiting...” he heard Isabella joining in. She sang lowly but he could still hear her. Blaine had gotten the musical skills from his mother.
“I could write a million songs about the way you say my name. I could live a lifetime with you and then do it all again. And like I can't force the sun to rise or hasten summer's start, neither should I rush my way into your heart...I'll be waiting for you baby. I'll be holding back the darkest night. Love is waiting til we're ready, till it's right. Love is waiting...I'll be waiting for you baby. I'll be holding back the darkest night. Love is waiting till we're ready, till it's right...Love is waiting...” Blaine sang finishing the song. The group of people who had been dancing stopped and clapped for him. Kurt stood up and clapped for him with everybody else. As Blaine put the guitar back Kurt left the room and went into the hallway wiping his eyes.
“Hey...was that too much?” Blaine asked.
“No...God...no that was amazing, Blaine. I can't believe you did that...you are amazing,” Kurt said. Blaine walked over to him and put his hands on Kurt's hips.
“I'll always be here for you...that song was for you as you know and I meant every word,” Blaine said. Kurt smiled and leaned in and pressed his lips to Blaine's.
“Blaine Wyatt Anderson!”
Kurt pulled away as Blaine took his hands off Kurt's hips. Kurt looked behind Blaine to see Blaine's grandfather standing with his arms crossed. Kurt felt the fear in him rise and Blaine's body suddenly tensed. Blaine looked behind his back at his grandfather.
“Yes, grandfather?”
“Tonight is about your brother and his beautiful wife. Not you and your sick ways. Don't ruin your brother's night because you have no rights and are jealous. If you'd find yourself a better woman then you could have all of this.”
“No. I'm happy with Kurt. I'm not changing who I am to please you.”
“Then kiss your inheritance goodbye.”
“I don't need you or the money.”
“Then you'll never see me again. Why doesn't the fag leave and you stay and celebrate with your brother?”
“Don't call him that,” Blaine said turning on Kurt. Kurt put his hands on Blaine's lower back and felt Blaine's hands cover his own.
“Don't tell me what to do boy. I will not stand to see you...do what it is you do...while your brother is celebrating his marriage.”
“Every other couple is being affectionate.”
“That doesn't mean you can be. Now get away from him and get in there.”
Blaine laced his fingers through Kurt's and they went back into the party. When they got back to his table Isabella hugged Blaine and then him.
“I knew he was going to do this...ignore him. Why don't you sit down Kurt...you don't look good...” she said handing him his glass of water. He took a sip and closed his eyes. There was no need for the marriage blow and that was the only comment that seemed to really bother him. Blaine kissed his forehead and made sure Kurt was okay. Once Kurt had convinced he left him to go talk to Cooper. Kurt stayed at the table the rest of the night. Blaine's grandparents stayed away from it and he sat by himself. Eventually, Blaine joined him and tried to get him to dance.
“I'm not in the mood. Go have fun...”
“I'm not having fun without you by my side.”
“Blaine...it was a mistake for me to come with you.”
“No, it wasn't. He's an ass. I'm not afraid to tell him to his face either because my parents are the ones paying for my schooling. I don't need his money.”
“I'm sorry,” Kurt said.
“Don't apologize. Come on...one last dance and we can head back to the hotel.”
Kurt stood up with him and followed him to the dance floor. Kurt wrapped his arms around Blaine's neck as his arms wound around Kurt's waist. The song was called Realize. Kurt had heard Blaine sing it multiple times and even play it on his guitar when Kurt was over his apartment.
They were giggling as they walked into their hotel room. Kurt took his suit jacket off and threw it over the back of a chair. He fell onto the bed ready to sleep. Blaine laid next to him and kissed down his jaw and neck. He stopped at the dip of Kurt's collarbone.
“No,” Kurt said moving back to lean against the headboard.
“Sorry. Just got caught up in the moment. Let's change and head and to bed.”
After they were dressed and Blaine's hair was was freed from the gel they laid down. They met in the middle and Kurt rested his head on Blaine's chest. One of his legs was thrown over Blaine's and he had never felt more content.
“Goodnight, baby,” Blaine said.
“Goodnight,” Kurt replied smiling and closing his eyes.
