“Are you okay?”
“No...but I will be,” Kurt replied. He looked over at the curly haired boy with big hazel eyes. Blaine was his best friend. His imaginary friend.
“Is it your mom?”
Kurt tensed up and sighed. He had appeared to him when he was six and his mom had gotten sick. Blaine was a ten year old boy who helped kids like Kurt out. Plus, he was always by himself. Nobody spoke to him. He was deemed different. He talked to Rachel Berry, and nobody liked her. They were only seven. Why were they judged already?
“Yeah...my dad said that I should expect things to not be good for a while...I'm going to lose my mom, Blaine,” Kurt said starting to cry. The boy got up and hugged him tightly. Kurt curled in on himself and cried into his shirt. Kurt loved his mom very much. He didn't want to lose her to cancer.
“Things will be okay Kurt...I know they will be. You just be strong okay?” Blaine said.
“I'll try,” Kurt replied.
“Why don't you swing? Have some fun before you leave,” Blaine said. Kurt smiled at Blaine's infectious happy mood and complied. They started swinging to see who could go higher and Kurt always won. He thought Blaine did it on purpose though. Then it would turn into them jumping off the swing to see who could jump further. That, Kurt easily won since he was taller than Blaine. And Blaine was older than him.
“Kurt!” he heard his father yell as he went to get back on the swing. Kurt turned around and of course there stood his dad. Blaine's smile turned into a frown as did Kurt's. He didn't want leave yet but he was going to see his mom now. He ran to his dad who smiled down at him.
“Did you have fun?” his father asked.
“I did...Blaine was with me again,” Kurt said. His father looked at him warily and sighed. Burt had said “sure” to all of Kurt's requests for Blaine. He had heard his father telling someone it was just from his mom's sickness and he was doing something to help him get over it. Kurt had fought it but never won. Why would anyone believe him?
“Can I get mommy a rose?” Kurt asked as they walked by the gift shop in the hospital. Burt nodded and walked with him in and bought the reddest rose there was. Kurt took it and held it tightly as they walked up to her room. His mom had been in here for a week now. The doctor told him she'd be here from now on. Kurt hated hearing those words but his mom needed to get better and if she was meant to stay here for a long time to help he could understand.
“Lizzy?” Burt asked opening the door.
“Hi, honey,” her voice soft as silk sounded throughout the room. Kurt walked in behind his dad and ran to her bed getting up with her and handing her the rose. She looked weaker and smaller than usual and it stung Kurt.
“Thank you, Kurt,” she said smiling and kissing his forehead. Burt took it and put it in the vase with the other roses they had gotten. Kurt lay curled up by him mom like always. He fell asleep in her arms like always as his father and her talked.
The next thing he knew he was being shaken awake. A horrible beeping was sounding through the room and Kurt covered his ears. His father picked him up and moved into the hall. When the noise died down. He looked up at his father who was holding back tears. Kurt heard the doctor yelling in the room and it started to sink in.
“Mom!” Kurt cried out.
“No...Kurt. Stop,” Burt said holding him as he struggled against the hold. Kurt looked up at his dad crying.
“She's not coming back bud...Mom's with the other angels now.”
“No! She's fine!” Kurt yelled as he started fighting his dad again. His mom was everything to him. He loved her so much. They were always so close and never spent a minute apart until she had gotten really sick. He had been in her arms when it happened.
“I'm sorry, kid. But she was happy when it happened. You were with her the whole time and she was thankful that you were there,” Burt said holding him closer. Kurt sobbed against his dad's shoulder and looked up seeing Blaine standing in the hall looking at him sadly.
“I'm so sorry Kurt,” Blaine said with tears streaming down his face.
The days leading up to and after his mom's funeral were the worst in his life. But nothing compared to what happened after all of that. Kurt turned eight a week after his mom's funeral and he was more than happy to forget about it this year but his dad wouldn't let him. His dad took him out for dinner and ice cream and took him shopping for anything he wanted.
Kurt had somewhat of a pleasant day but then things got bad. Blaine had shown up when he got back home and was sitting on Kurt's bed.
“Hi!” Kurt said happily. Blaine looked miserable but managed to smile at him.
“Happy Birthday, Kurt,” Blaine said.
“Thanks!” Kurt replied smiling brightly. He was troubled by Blaine's mood though and wanted to know what was wrong.
“Are you okay?” Kurt asked.
“not really...” Blaine said.
“What is it?”
“Kurt...I need to go,” Blaine said.
“Okay...I'll see you tomorrow then?” Kurt asked as he put his bag of items in the corner of the room.
“No...Kurt, I'm going. For good. I've been assigned to someone else.”
“No...” Kurt said feeling the tears hit his eyes.
“I'm so sorry Kurt,” Blaine said.
“This isn't fair! You're supposed to be with me!”
“Nothing is ever permanent.”
“Why?”
“It just happens. When the kids turn a certain age we have to leave and start over,” Blaine said.
“They won't let you stay?”
“No. I want to. I really want to but I can't.”
“Just go! Go, like everyone else in my life,” Kurt said crying for the thousandth time this past week. He watched Blaine disappear and ran to his bed jumping on it and crying into his mother's old pillow. It still smelled like her and he was glad it did.
“I miss you mom...”
Kurt spent the next few hours laying in his bed crying. He cried himself to sleep that night wishing he could have Blaine and his mother back.
