It's been two weeks since Mr. Anderson walked in on Kurt singing. Kurt doesn't really know what happened, why Mr. Anderson was even there. He didn't want Kurt and he was fine with that, really he was, kind of. Mr. Anderson was just making it hard. So, so hard. Ever since that day, Mr. Anderson, has been looking at him, a lot.
Why was Mr. Anderson doing this to him? Kurt didn't need this, he was trying, really hard to get over Mr. Anderson, but the looking was making it impossible. Even so, he was going to ignore it, act like it was not happening. He was doing a pretty good job at that.
Kurt was doing his homework, when his phone beeped, with a new text message.
Rachel: So, I think you should have lunch with Tina, Mercedes, and me tomorrow. What do you say?
He didn't know what to say. Sure he really missed his friends, (if he could even call them that) but they grew apart and he didn't know if they were the same people. And without Santana, it would just seem or feel wrong. Santana is what brought them together, and she was missing.
Maybe he should though. They were his everything before Santana went missing and maybe getting back to what they used to be would keep his mind off Mr. Anderson, and he sure needed the distraction.
Kurt: Sure.
Rachel: YAY! Okay, so we can't wait. We really did miss you Kurt.
Kurt: I missed you guy's too. A lot.
Rachel: I'm really sorry, Kurt, for not calling you or anything while you were gone. I was just hard you know.
Kurt: You don't have to explain. I know it was hard. And calling does go both ways right? I could have called anytime, but I didn't, because of everything.
Rachel: Yeah, it was and still is hard. I know we all still miss her.
Kurt: Yeah, so much.
Rachel: It's okay, Kurt. Or at least it will be okay. I'm glad we will get to hang out again. I'll see you tomorrow.
Kurt: I'm glad too. See you.
And he was glad, really, he was, but also nervous.
After ending his conversation with Rachel, Kurt started back on his homework, until there was a knock on his bed room door. "Come in."
Finn popped his head in the door, smiling at Kurt. "Hey, little bro," He mumbled, making his way over to Kurt's bed.
"What's up?" Kurt questioned.
"Nothing, It's just, it's weird, being back here you know?" Finn, answered, his voice low.
"Yeah, I do. It's hard too; I just wish it was last year still you know? Before everything got too messed up." Kurt said, his voice braking at the end. He really missed how things were, when he had no grown apart from his friends, Santana was still around. God, he missed her so much, he could talk to her about anything and she never judged, she only helped.
"How you doing anyways, Finn? Have you seen Rachel yet?" Rachel and Finn had just started dating, that was before their parents decided to move them away for a year. Kurt knew Finn was still harboring some unresolved feelings for Rachel.
Shaking his head no, "I haven't. I did look, but we don't have any of the same classes, and I don't know where she hangs out at lunch. But I am sure I will talk to her before the school year is out." Finn, laughed, trying to hide his pain.
"Well, I think you're lucky, you have the best little brother ever." Finn raised his brow, curiously.
Chuckling loudly, Kurt put him out of his misery, "Well, I am having lunch with her tomorrow. I will tell her to call you or something, okay?"
Finn started bouncing up and down on Kurt's bed.
"I'll take that has a yes," Kurt was happy that he had made Finn so happy, and he really hoped that he and Rachel could work it out and try again. "Now, go. I have lots of homework to do, and only so many hours to do it in."
"Okay, okay. I'm gone." Finn said, getting up from Kurt's bed, and walking to the door, "Goodnight, Kurt."
"Goodnight, Finn." Kurt, said, watching his brother walk out his room.
Now back to homework and hopefully no more distraction's Kurt thought.
-
The next day at school, Kurt was kind of on edge. He was going to have lunch with people he had not really talked to in a year. He was also really excited, he loved them, he would always love them and finally getting to be with them again was what he needed to come complete his homecoming.
-
Walking into the cafeteria, Kurt looked around for Rachel, spotting her, he started to make his way over to the table.
"Hi, guy's," Kurt greeted, once he made it to where the girls were sitting.
Tina was the first one up, as he was the closest to him. She pulled him into her arm's, squeezing tightly. "Kurt, oh, how I have missed you," She whispered into Kurt's ear.
"I've, missed you too," Kurt, said back to her. And really, he had. It felt so good, seeing his friends again, he didn't know how he ever got through so much time without them.
Once Tina pulled away, another pair of arms was thrown around his neck. "Kurt, it's so good to see you. How was Iceland? How are you?" Mercedes, questioned.
"Mercedes, hi." Kurt was so overwhelmed; he didn't really understand how much he had missed them until just now. These girls were his best friends, and no matter how long they have been away from each other, they all ways would be. He loved them so much and was so glad that they were back in his life. "It was wonderful. I leaned, so much. I loved it, but I missed you all so much and I wish you could have visited or something. As for myself, I'm doing great." He wasn't lying, not really, he was doing great, apart for the Mr. Anderson of it all.
"Oh good." Mercedes, replied, taking her seat.
Next up was Rachel.
She came walking up to him, pulling him into a big hug, squeezing the hardest out of everyone else. "I missed you the most," She whispered into his ear.
Kurt felt his eyes begin to water, "And I you." He whispered back. No one, not even Santana, were as close to him as Rachel was. He did miss her the most, she was his family, and he was just so happy she was back in his life.
After Rachel pulled away, everyone took a seat at the lunch table; they all started discussing things about how their last year was. Kurt realized he had missed so much. He didn't even think about how just because he was gone, that life still kept going here.
They we all just chatting, and it felt like old times, and like nothing had changed, which was good because really it hadn't, they were all just a year older, and missing one key member of their group, but they were still the same people they always had been, best friends.
Lunch had come to an end, so it was time for everyone to go to their separate classes, which sucked because Kurt still had so much to catch up on, but all that could wait; they all decided they would go to Rachel's after school and just hand out like old times. Kurt was happy, freely happy and everything that happened in the weeks since he had been back, they didn't matter, he was just happy.
Before Rachel could fully make her escape, Kurt pulled her aside. "So, Finn really would like to see you." He said, hopping she also wanted to see him too.
"Oh,"
"Yeah, he wants you to call him. Whenever you can. He misses you." Kurt said, gnawing, his lip.
Rachel smiled, shyly. Well that has to be a good sign, Kurt thought. "I miss him too, so much, but I-" Oh no, here is the part where she says ‘I don't wanna be with him anymore.' Kurt really hoped that was not the case because he did not want to live with a hear broken Finn, he already had to deal with that when they moved to Iceland.
"He never once tried calling me when you moved. I just, I assumed, he didn't want to be with me anymore," Rachel was saying. God, Finn could be so dumb sometimes, why would he not call the girl he loves. "I would, call him, but I have a boyfriend and I just, I can't." Well damn. "Tell him, I'm sorry, please."
Nodding, Kurt agreed. "Yeah, okay. He is stupid sometimes, that one." Rachel smiled sadly up at him.
"So, I have to go to class now."
"Okay, I'll see you later then." Kurt said, moving his body into hug his best friend.
"You sure will." Rachel, said, he smile talking over her whole face. She pulled away and started walking away, trying to get to her class before she was late.
--
After school Kurt met, Rachel, Tina and Mercedes in front of the school. They all decided they would go grab coffee before going go Rachel's.
After getting there coffee to go, they started their journey to Rachel's, talking endlessly along the way about old times. They were laughing so much, more than Kurt had really laughed in year and it felt really good.
They started talking about Santana, how much they missed her, and so many other things. How could they not miss her? She was the one that brought them all together. Not knowing what happened to her hurt a lot, but if they were together and had once another, they could focus in how much she meant to them, not her disappearance.
They were so caught up in the memory's that they didn't notice the sirens, or the light until they got closer to Rachel's house. Once they didn't notice they all stopped walking, not knowing what was going on. Their whole street was gathered around, watching whatever was going in unfold.
Kurt noticed his dad, standing at the sidelines. He gestured for his friend's to follow him, before running off to the direction his dad was in.
"Dad, what's going on?" Kurt said the concern evident in his quivering voice.
"It's Santana," is all his dad got out before Kurt started to talk over him.
"They found her? How is she? Oh, I hope he is okay." Kurt said, clearly, excited.
"Bud." Kurt's dad, said, stopping Kurt from his excitement.
"What?" What's wrong." Something felt off, Kurt could feel it in his bones.
He grabbed a hold of Rachel's hand, Rachel to Tina's and Tina to Mercedes, before, Kurt's dad, Burt, started to speak again.
"They found Santana's body." Burt's voice was sad, he didn't want his son to go through this, they had just gotten home and this was all happening again.
"What?" Kurt's eyes started to leak tears. He turned toward his three friends and noticed they weren't any better than himself. They all started to curl together, crying into each other's shoulders.
They cried for what seemed like hours, but was probably only minutes, until they hear something coming from down the driveway of what used to be Santana's house. It was a gurney, and what clearly had to be Santana's body, in a black body bag.
All four of them stood there just watching them load one of their best friend's up into an ambulance and most likely taken to a morgue. How had this happened, how had one moment had they all been happy and the next it was taken away.
Santana was dead.
They had known, or at least they thought they did, after all it had been a year, but Kurt had some hope that at least one day she would just come walking back into their lives like she was never gone.
But now that would never happen.
Santana was dead.
