“Listening to the men sing on the ship was one of the best parts of sailing with daddy.” Kurt thought. He was turning 8 tomorrow and decided he wanted to spend his birthday on The Interceptor, with his daddy and the crew sailing to God knows where. Kurt never knew exactly where they were going; he usually stayed on the ship when his daddy went on to land to talk to people. He always said it was something about business and that Kurt wouldn’t like it, he didn’t really care though. He figured he’d have more fun on the ship anyway.
Kurt listened to the end of the song as the crew finished the dance. These nights were the most fun, when the weather was perfect and the sea was calm, and the men got to drink some sort of juice Kurt’s daddy wouldn’t let him have. Even though some of the crew tried to sneak him a sip every now and then, Kurt didn’t really like it. It tasted bad and made his throat feel weird, it also made the men do very weird things they wouldn’t normally do. Like dance, sing and even sometimes cry.
“So Kurt, what do you wanna be when you grow up?” One of the men asked. His name was Arthur Norrington, but most people called him Artie. At least, they did when they drank their juice.
“I want to be a captain like daddy! And sail all the seas and even find treasure!” Kurt could hardly contain his excitement just thinking about it, letting alone putting it in words.
“Woahoho!” Artie yelled as he slammed his juice on the table. “Those are some big dreams! You sure you’ll be able to do that?” Kurt grinned wider than he ever had and nodded hard. “Well, if you are really sure, hows about I take ya up tomorrow to the quarter deck and I’ll teach ya how to steer the ship?” Kurt jumped with excitement. “Yes, please! We’ll start early tomorrow morning! Maybe next time I can be the captain and steer the whole time!” Artie looked at him with a smile that soon faded.
People up on deck started yelling, and Kurt could smell smoke. The crew left their juices down on the table, some knocking over, and stood up quickly. Artie looked around, trying his best to make out what the screaming men were saying. He then turned and put his hands on Kurt’s shoulders, pushing him down until Kurt was no longer standing, but sitting in his seat.
“Kurt, stay here. I’m not sure what’s going on,” Artie said looking Kurt strait in the eye, “but please just stay here. I will come down and get you when we know everything is okay.”
Kurt nodded without even thinking about what he was saying, all he could think about was what was going on up on top, and where his daddy was. He hoped he was okay as he sat there, crossing his arms and rubbing his shoulders, trying to comfort himself from the chaos happening above him.
Kurt couldn’t stand it, he had to go up. He had to make sure that his daddy and his family was okay. He didn’t know what he was gonna do, but he had to do something. He took one of the swords that was left on the counter and wondered how Artie and daddy swung it around so easily. It seemed to be bigger than him, and it was definitely heavier. He drug it up the stairs and tried to open the door. It didn’t seem to be working out so he dropped the sword left it to fall down the stairs. The door swung open and he ran through the hallway, up more steps. The screams were getting louder, and closer. He opened the door to the deck and was suddenly hit hard in the eye by something hard. Very hard, so hard in fact that it sent him hurtling up against the wall. Kurt could feel tears coming down his cheek, but didn’t seem to be crying.
Swords were clashing, guns were being fired, and people were being thrown off into the sea as Kurt slowly lay down. Everything seemed to go dark and suddenly felt very tired.
Kurt opened his eye, the other one seemed to not be working. He could hear his daddy talking to someone that sounded familiar, but he couldn’t put a face to the voice.
“Kurt will be okay, Governor, he just needs to rest. His eyesight should be back to basically normal, he might have some problems with it in the future but they should only be minor. I’m sure he’ll be up and ready to sail a ship in no time.”
“Good, good. Thank you very much. I’ll show you out.” Kurt could hear his daddy walking further away from his room and down the steps. He looked over to see a boy, lying in the bed next to him. He got up quietly and walked over to the boy, who still appeared to be sleeping. His hair was a dark brown and he had curls that went everywhere, they didn’t seem to be tamed at all. His eyelashes were incredibly long and his skin looked very soft. Kurt took a strand of the boy’s hair and curled it around his ear. He seemed to be the most beautiful boy Kurt had ever seen. He looked down to his shirt and saw something gold that glistened in the light that streamed in through the curtains covering the window.
Kurt reached down and pulled the thin gold string until it wouldn’t move anymore, realizing it was a necklace. It seemed to be very heavy and was holding some sort of medallion. Kurt held it up in his hands to look at it closer. A gold plated skull shone brightly in the sun. A black pirate flag with a skull and cross bones crossed his mind and Kurt stepped back, suddenly more afraid of the boy. Kurt looked down at his angelic face and felt his breathing slow down, this boy couldn’t be a pirate. He couldn’t be bad at all. Kurt yanked the chain quickly until the strand snapped. He could hear faint footsteps in the distance and assumed it to be his father.
Kurt ran over to his desk and pulled out the drawer. He lifted up the bottom board to reveal a small hiding space, and dropped the trinket in. Maybe if the boy wont wake up to the necklace, he’ll forget all about it. He dropped the board, closed the drawer and jumped in his bed just as his father walked in.
