“Ten!” Kurt ran to the other side of the room and opened the door quietly; he cursed himself for not being patient enough when it creaked at the last moment.
“Nine!” He shut the door slowly.
“Eight!” Kurt shut off the light to the new room and ran to the corner. Silently screaming when he stubbed his toe on one of the chairs.
“Seven!” Kurt sat down in the corner and covered up with a blanket. He was usually quite good at this game and was almost never caught. But he still got very nervous whenever it was his turn to hide.
“..Three! Two, one! Ready or not Kurt here I come!” Kurt smiled at the sound of his footsteps. They played this game all the time, and it always made Kurt happy. He sucked in a big breath and held it tight, he knew that the littlest sound would be heard a mile away and he didn’t want a sniff or a sigh to be the thing that got him caught. Kurt could hear footsteps getting closer and closer. He kept holding his breath but his head was starting to feel like a balloon. The door opened and Kurt squeezed his eyes shut, hoping that maybe if he were perfectly still he wouldn’t be found. For a couple seconds he couldn’t hear anything, it went silent. And then..
“Found you!” Blaine yelled as he threw off Kurt’s blanket.
“Ahhhh! Blaine, it’s only because you cheated!” Kurt knew that there was no cheating, but he hated admitting defeat. Blaine laughed and took Kurt’s hand.
“What do you wanna do now, Kurt?” Kurt intertwined his fingers with Blaine’s. They did this often, they were best friends. And best friends held hands, right?
“We could play tag? Or maybe-“ Kurt was cut off by a dark, cocky laugh.
“Hello Seb..” Blaine said with a sigh. He dropped Kurt’s hand the second he noticed that Sebastian had entered the room. Blaine loved holding his best friends hand, but Sebastian usually made fun of them. While Blaine didn’t care what Sebastian did or said, he could tell that Kurt felt a little sadder whenever Sebastian poked fun.
The cocky laugh circled the room, “You know that you’re terrible at tag Kurt.” Kurt looked down at the floor, feeling the color in his cheeks rising up through his neck. Blaine put his hand on Kurt’s back in reassurance.
“Don’t listen to Seb, you’re great at tag.” Blaine whispered into Kurt’s ear.
“Don’t worry Kurt! If you really wanna play.. I’ll go easy on you.” Sebastian proclaimed, ignoring the fact that Blaine was whispering to HIS best friend. The three were momentarily distracted by an older boy’s voice yelling for Blaine to leave.
“Coming Coop!” Blaine yelled back, probably louder than he really needed to. Blaine gave Kurt a quick hug and a nod to Sebastian, and headed out, letting Kurt know that he’d see them tomorrow. Kurt and Sebastian sat down next to each other, Kurt still a little hurt from before. Sebastian was finally starting to get the idea that maybe he was a little rough. He scooted closer to his friend and nudged him with his shoulder. Kurt sniffed and used his wrist to wipe back a tear.
“Why do you have to be so mean sometimes, Seb?” Sebastian looked down at his hands for a couple seconds, then back up at Kurt.
“I don’t know, I’m sorry. I don’t want to hurt you, sometimes I just say things.. My dad says I’m obnoxious but that will help me out someday when I go into the courts. I don’t mean it, I promise.” Sebastian puts his hand on the back of his neck, and rubbed out what was probably nothing. Kurt looked over at his friend and shifted so that their shoulders rubbed against each other.
“I know. You will do great things someday. You know that right, Seb?” Kurt moved his head so it was resting on Sebastian’s shoulder, but shifted so that he was still looking at him. “I just hope that someday I’ll be as amazing as you.” Kurt ducks his head with a sheepish smile.
“You’re kidding right!” Sebastian stood up and looked Kurt strait in the eye. “Kurt, you’re the king’s son. Everyone loves you already and you haven’t even started shaving yet!”
“Hey!” Kurt said with a smile.
“I’m serious, Kurt! You’re gonna be the next king, and you’ll rule the country someday. Soon you’ll forget all about Blaine and I, and our silly little friendship because you’ll have those big Dukes as friends and other kings that want to talk to you. At least that’s what daddy says..” Sebastian trails off.
“You really think so?” Kurt looks up at his friend who just watched him in awe, mouth wide open.
“Kurt,” Sebastian sits back next to Kurt and takes his hand, “I know so.” Sebastian squeezes Kurt’s hand in reassurance and sits back against the wall. They sit and wait for their parents to get done talking about grown up kingdom things. After a couple minutes of comfortable silence Kurt’s mommy tells Sebastian that it’s time for him to go, and his parents are waiting at the door for him. Sebastian really liked Kurt’s mommy, she was the most beautiful person in all the land and she seemed to like him a little more than his own mommy. “Thanks your majesty!” Sebastian turned to follow them before Kurt stopped him, pulling his arm to turn him around so that they both faced each other.
“Seb, you know I would never forget about you. No matter what!” Sebastian smiles and nods.
“Do you promise Kurt? Promise you’ll never forget about me?” Kurt looked at Sebastian for a few seconds before answering, “Of course not. How could I? You’ll be there with me the whole time!” Sebastian’s smile grew bigger than it had that whole day, he gave a quick last hug to his best friend and then left, letting Kurt know that he would see him again as soon as possible. He didn’t get to see Kurt as much as Blaine did, since his daddy was King of another region. He got to see him whenever the kings met, but it was difficult for them to set up a play date for two 13 year old boys who live many miles away from each other. Blaine’s daddy wasn’t a king like his or Kurt’s, he was just someone who worked for the king. But their daddies were good friends. Sebastian didn’t really like that Blaine got to see his best friend more than he did, but he knew that he would always be Kurt’s favorite. He’d see him again soon.
