The Andersons were technically Catholic, but Blaine was always quick to qualify this with the term ‘Chreaster,’ referring to the two times a year his father insisted the entire family make it to St. Paul’s, no exceptions. Blaine’s older brother Jonathan only went to keep the peace, having given up organized religion years ago. Blaine wasn’t the most religious person but he wasn’t opposed to the idea either. He believed in the Trinity and all of that, and it was nice to have a patron saint praying for him (St. Cecilia, patron saint of music). Blaine liked the idea of there being something bigger than him in this world. Still, try explaining that to Kurt, who may have respected Blaine’s decision to attend the occasional Sunday mass but didn’t pretend to understand it.

“It’s like they don’t even acknowledge you exist Blaine! Look at this,” he exclaimed as he twirled his laptop around to show Blaine the Vatican’s website. “I looked up the official policy: homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. They are contrary to natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.” How can you willingly be a part of that?”

Blaine didn’t have an answer for that. Yes, there were definitely parts of the Church he disagreed with. However, as Fr. Werkhoven raised the Eucharist with, “Take this, all of you, and eat it. This is my body, which has been given up for you,” Blaine knew that there was something decidedly right about him being here.

End Notes: This drabble is closest to my heart. I'm staunchly Catholic, and understanding and justifying the Church's view on homosexuality has never been easy. Like Blaine, this is just one of those things that I will vehemently disagree on without abandoning the Church. And even though I did make them Catholic in part because of my life, it's not the only reason. I saw someone suggest this on tumblr a few months ago and it really stuck with me. There are actually a good number of Catholics in Ohio, so statistically speaking it is quite possible. I don't see Mr. Anderson as outwardly hateful; until proven otherwise, I think he is simply unable to connect with his son and has purposefully distanced himself, causing Blaine to think he does not care for him. I think he does care for him, just in a way that comes with strings attached. I'm not condoning him, just creating a headcanon. Also: St. Paul's is actually a church in Westerville, Fr. Werkhoven is one of my favorite priests ever, and Jacob is Zachary Quinto, based on this photo from the Versace runway:http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/wadecriss.jpg
