“Kurt?” came a questioning voice. “Are you out here?”
Kurt didn’t say anything but he knew Blaine could see him in the porch light. Silently the other boy sat next to him, a safe six inches away.
“I’m sorry.”
“Cool it, Blaine,” Kurt snapped back. “I don’t need you fighting my battles for me.”
“I know that,” he said, reaching out to touch his hand. When Kurt didn’t respond, he pulled away. “It’s just…listening to them, trying to belittle you like that…I can’t just stand by and say nothing.”
Kurt sighed. “Look Blaine, I’ve been dealing with those guys for two years now. I know when to pick my battles. Them laughing at me for wanting to write my Pippa Middleton musical is not the time for you to launch a diatribe.”
“I guess I did overreact.”
“You think? I’m not some delicate creature, Blaine.”
“I know.”
“I’m fully capable of standing up for myself.”
“I know.”
“And every time you do that it just reinforces in their narrow minds that you’re the man and I’m the woman and this relationship is unequal.”
“I know! It’s just-” it had been weeks since that day in the coffee shop, and even though it had been said again, Blaine didn’t take the words lightly. “I love you. And I guess that makes me kind of crazy.”
Kurt looked away and breathed heavily, but enclosed the space for the first time, wrapping his arm around Blaine’s waist. “I know,” he replied softly. “And I’m sorry too, for storming out. I’m just so used to doing this on my own, you know.”
Blaine laid his head on Kurt’s shoulder. “Well, I’m not going anywhere, if you’ll have me,” he finished nervously.
Kurt twisted his head down and kissed Blaine tenderly. “I know.”
As Blaine returned his head to Kurt’s shoulder, Kurt tucked his boyfriend a little tighter into his arm. The crickets were even louder than before, but it didn’t matter anymore. Anything they needed to say didn’t need words.
