“Blaine, I thought we agreed on no singing? We were just going to watch the movie?”
“But it’s the most famous song! Come on, Kurt, please?”
Kurt rolled his eyes but couldn’t resist his boyfriend’s puppy-dog eyes. It didn’t hurt that Blaine’s voice blended perfectly with Judy Garland’s in a weird kind of way. Then again, Kurt wasn’t sure if there was anyone in this world who could make Blaine sound terrible. He snuggled Blaine closer as the latter was finishing, “Oh why can’t I?”
Blaine sighed as the scene changed. “I can’t believe they almost didn’t use that song in the movie.”
“Me neither. Thank God they did though.”
“Yeah. I think this song is a major reason why Dorothy’s my favorite character.”
“Dorothy, really?” Kurt asked. “Not the Cowardly Lion, Mr. ‘Courage?’”
“Oh come on, you don’t expect me to be that clich, do you?” Blaine laughed.
“Well, it was the first thing you texted me after only knowing me for a day. It just seems like the kind of character you’d like to emulate.”
Blaine shrugged but didn’t say anything. A slight chill came over him, and he fixed his eyes to the screen. Kurt furrowed his brow. “Blaine, is something wrong? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit a nerve,” he finished hurriedly.
Blaine glanced quickly at him before returning his eyes to the television, now full of color. “The Cowardly Lion isn’t my favorite because I am the Lion,” he said softly. “I’ve always seen myself in him. He puts on a front for strangers; he tries to act all brave but really he’s more scared than anyone, and in the end some stranger has to give him a Purple Heart to make him feel brave. I like Dorothy because she had the power to send herself home the whole time.”
Kurt considered this for a moment before responding, “But even Dorothy needed Glinda to show her how the shoes worked.”
Blaine gave a non-committal shrug but began rubbing Kurt’s knee, so he continued.
“When I think of the Lion, I think of how he was always there for Dorothy, even when he was scared and didn’t know what to do. He did the only thing he could do- support his friends. Even the friends he had only known for a few days. You have…no idea how much strength you gave me in those last days before I transferred to Dalton. It didn’t matter that you were scared. You were brave for me.”
Blaine couldn’t help but smile at the end of Kurt’s little speech, but still didn’t say anything, so Kurt laced their fingers together gently.
“Plus, you’ve stuck around with me this long, even through all of my stupid drama. I think that deserves a Purple Heart in and of itself.”
Blaine brought their lips together and broke it off just as quickly. Blinking a few times, he murmured, “You have no idea how much that means to me, Kurt.”
“I really do mean every word, Blaine. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
