Blaine Hummel-Anderson
A Husband, Father, and Friend
“I really miss you. No one will ever replace you. You know that. I.. I heard our song on the radio today. It took me back to when we first met. It was the first time that I ever heard your voice. You took my hand and led me down that hallway, saying that it was a shortcut. Later, I realized that it wasn’t. It was more of a scenic route” Kurt said with a laugh. He smiled a bit. “That hallway will always be special to me. It may have students walking in and out of it every day, but it’s somewhere only we know.” Kurt’s breath hitched as he remembered the six words that he has said into Blaine’s shoulder after Blaine had sang that song to him. He whispered them slowly. “I’ll never say goodbye to you” Kurt slowly closed his eyes and felt a single hot tear run down his cheek. “You never have and you never will” a familiar voice said from behind him.
Kurt opened his eyes and slowly turned around. His eyes went wide as he saw the tall young man that he once hated, holding a bouquet of white roses. “I know that I tried to steal him away from you in the past, and I’ve moved on, Kurt. But I still care about him” the man said quietly. Kurt sighed. “I thought that you were in New York or doing a world tour of West Side Story or something.” He said calmly. “I am” the man said, referring to the latter. “But we’re in Ohio for a show. I thought I’d come and visit.” Kurt glared at the man. “Why now, Sebastian? You didn’t even come to his funeral. You never cared for him. You just wanted him for his looks, his voice, and his body.” Kurt snapped. “Blaine never wanted you. He chose me. Over you. Don’t you think that it’s time to get over that fact and move on?”
Sebastian stepped back, seeing that Kurt had stood up. “Kurt… that was the old Sebastian Smythe. That was the Sebastian that didn’t care about anybody’s feelings. He was spoiled and pathetic.” Sebastian said quietly. “I’m not that guy anymore… when Blaine proposed to you, I realized that you two are truly soulmates. So I moved on and focused on my career. So sure, I haven’t found the perfect guy yet. But I will. I’ve learned to be patient” Sebastian said all of this while looking Kurt straight in the eye. His voice had an apologetic tone. “I’m sorry, Kurt, for making your senior year miserable.
I’m sorry that I tried to take Blaine away from you. Now all I want is your forgiveness.”
Kurt smiled and held out his hand. Maybe Sebastian had changed. Maybe he was a different man. “Fine, Sebastian, I forgive you. Maybe being on stage has changed you, you’ve embraced your inner ‘Baby John’ ” Kurt said with a smile. He laughed at Sebastian’s expression. “Hey, I still check Broadway.com every day. Don’t look so surprised that I know what character you play.” Sebastian smiled and shook Kurt’s hand. “Hey, I have a show tonight. You should come. I could get you the tickets for free!”
“I’ll consider it. Even though I might critique you afterwards” Kurt said with a laugh. “Here’s my number.” He said holding out a card, “Call me if you can manage to get me those tickets, okay?” Sebastian took the card and then placed the white roses on Blaine’s grave “See you later, Kurt” Kurt smiled at Sebastian as he walked slowly away from the headstone. Kurt looked down at his lover. Blaine would’ve been happy that Kurt had forgiven Sebastian. “I love you, Blaine” Kurt said as he knelt down and kissed the headstone.
