“Dads, are you there?” Rachel asked looking into her webcam with a nervous Blaine and a fussy Bernadette in her arms.
“Hey princess!”
“Hi daddy!”
“Oh no dear, we were talking to the baby. Bernadette baby, It’s your grandpas and we love you.” Rachel rolled her eyes and smiled watching the baby coo and laugh at her grandfathers on the screen. After a few minutes of gushing over the baby, Bernie got bored and hopped off her mom’s lap to go play with her pile of toys at the foot of the bed they were sitting on. “Okay guys, what’s up? It sounded important.”
“Well its Blaine story to tell.” Rachel said moving the lap top over slightly so it was focusing on Blaine. She held his hand for support.
“What’s wrong son?” He had to choke back tears hearing them call him son. It’s a term of endearment that he used to long for from his own father. Hiram and Leroy took him into their home, they treated them like their own son, and he has been lying to them for almost two years. It broke his heart.
“Well, um, we – I, haven’t been entirely truthful with you these past few years.” Blaine looked down afraid to look into the screen; he didn’t want to see disappointment in their faces. He was tired of being a disappointment.
“Continue.” He heard Leroy say with an obviously worried tone.
“Um, Rachel and I aren’t = we aren’t together.”
“You guys broke up?”
“No sirs,” he paused. “we were never together.”
“What do you mean son?” The fact that Hiram still called him son, after revealing his lie, was a huge weight off his shoulders.
“We made a stupid mistake after a party and that’s when Bee was conceived. I wanted to do right by Rachel so we acted like we were a couple.”
“But Blaine, why would you have to act like a couple? If you wanted to do the right thing and be in a relationship with her, why didn’t you just do it?” Leroy commented, this time with a tone riddled in confusion.
“Because sir, the truth is –“
Rachel held his hand and whispered to him, “You can do it. Twenty seconds of courage is all you need.”
“The truth is that I’m gay. But I didn’t want people to think any less of Rachel so I chose to be with her. You are only the fourth and fifth person I’ve told.”
“Blaine, look at us.” Blaine slowly raised his head to look at the screen, his eyes full of tears. “Blaine, did you really think you had to hide that from us? Don’t you think that we would have understood?” He looked at the expressions on their faces. He was terrified of the disappointment but was pleasantly surprised when he saw they were faces of compassion.
“I’m sorry. I know; it’s just that I was so ashamed of everything. It was just easier to play house, so to speak.”
“You have nothing to be ashamed of. Not your sexuality, not your choses regarding our daughter, and especially not anything to do with that beautiful little girl. Do we wish you would have been honest from the beginning? Yes. You shouldn’t have had to go through this alone.”
“Thanks, but I wasn’t alone, I had Rachel. She has always been there for me. She knew me before I knew me.”
“That’s our girl.”
“Can you do me a favor though?”
“Yes Blaine?”
“Can you not tell anyone about this yet, I’m not ready to tell everyone yet. I want to just tell them that we broke up. I’d rather them think that this is something recent. Otherwise all that would have been in vain you know?
“Absolutely Blaine, whenever you’re ready.” Blaine and Rachel smiled at them and started to say their goodbyes. “One more thing Blaine.”
“Yes sirs?”
“You will always be a son to us. We love you.” At that Blaine couldn’t hold the tears back anymore. He let the tears flow freely and managed to choke out, “Love you too, dads.” Rachel disconnected the Skype call and wrapped her arms around Blaine.
“Why are you crying hunny?”
“Because, I thought for sure they would hate me for… lying to them about something so bad. I was afraid that I would lose the closest… thing to a father that I ever had. At that… it would have been twice the loss because… there is two of them. I didn’t want them to be… disappointed in me.” He choked out between sobs.
“Hunny you should know they would never feel that way about you. They love you and now they will love you anymore because you are now completely honest with both them and yourself.” She wiped a tear from his cheek with his thumb. “Besides, they might even like you more now.”
Blaine looked up at her in curiosity. “And why is that?”
“Because now they know that you aren’t defiling their baby girl.” Blaine couldn’t help but laugh. After a few minutes of silence Blaine finally like the world lifted off his shoulders. He threw himself back on Rachel’s bed and looked up at the ceiling.
“So, about this hideous room, how did your shopping trip with Kurt go this morning?”
