Epilogue
Blaine was nervous. It was a very rare thing for him to be nervous. People knew him to be the cool, calm, and collected guy. Today though, his leg was bouncing up and down and he could barely focus as he sat in the green room of Radio City Music Hall.
The twenty second pick had just been chosen. He was a kid that Blaine never played against from a school in Stony Brook, NY. The guys that were left in the room clapped as they looked up at a monitor that showed the 2015 NFL Draft as it was happening in the theater. It started out with 32 guys, now they were down to 9 as pick 22 walked across stage. He watched as defensive lineman Andrew Morning put on the Dallas Cowboys hat and posed with a wide smile – holding the team's jersey out in front of him.
Radio City Music Hall was animated with excitement on the beautiful evening in May. Blaine kind of hated that Finn wasn't here in the room right now. Finn decided that instead of putting himself into consideration for the NFL, he was going to become a sports broadcaster. After all, he did major in sports journalism and already had an internship in Chicago. While Blaine was proud of his best friend, he also hated him. It was mainly because he was alone in the green room, waiting to be chosen by a team without the guy he'd played with for the past four years at his side. They were always by each other's side.
Kurt was in the audience, though. Blaine hadn't seen him in hours and he imagined Kurt was equally as nervous. They both had just graduated college and after spending the school year apart, they were going to be finding out what the future held for them. Would it be more space? More distance? And could they handle that this time around?
Blaine knew for sure that Kurt didn't want to venture far from New York. They were willing to do their best while Blaine would travel on the road with his team, but as far as Kurt relocating entirely to the opposite end of the country, Blaine didn't see that happening.
Senior year wasn't nearly as difficult as either had made it out to be in their heads. At first, they'd gone from talking to each other non-stop, and then when things got to be busy – Blaine with football, track, and classes, Kurt with theater, Vogue, and classes – something as simple as communication turned out to be an obstacle. It was November, and Blaine seriously thought that Kurt would consider breaking it off. That was until one night during his team's road game to Easter Michigan University; Blaine looked up into the audience and saw – in the midst of a sea of green – one fan sticking out like a sore thumb. He wore a bright orange and blue Gators jersey underneath an orange Canada Goose coat and held up a sign that said "I love Number 21! GO GATORS!"
That was pretty much when Blaine knew that they'd be alright, and that they were certainly endgame. Since that cold night in November, they made efforts to talk to and see each other more. Blaine never once missed one of Kurt's shows in NY. Kurt made every playoff game including the championship, and they kissed in the middle of the field after the Gators won it all. Their relationship was expensive but money was nothing in comparison to how the two felt for another.
As Kurt applauded with the crowd, and the Andrew Morning kid went to meet his family and talk to the media, Kurt thought back to how hectic his year with Blaine had been. Filled with months on end of phone calls and rescheduled Skype dates, and 'do you still like me?' and 'am I really worth it?'s that always resulted in definitive yeses, and filled with holiday vacations that would always include good laughs and breathy moans as they made love, he realized the year was full of ups and downs. They realized that they were doing it, though. They were doing what Kurt thought for sure they would fail at. Maybe their relationship wasn't the norm, but they had made it work. Now, despite what anyone said, they were going to continue to make it work.
The theater of Radio City Music Hall was filled to the brim with NFL fans all clad in their favorite team's jersey, some holding up signs. The media was abuzz, chattering on the ground floor as all the important executives discussed players and teams and stats, and other things that Kurt Hummel really didn't understand.
What Kurt Hummel did understand was that he was the proudest man in the universe. His boyfriend had been selected as one of the 32 NCAA College football players to be chosen as a first round 2015 NFL draft pick. All the hard work that Blaine had put in over the past few years had paid off, despite what people told him. His size turned out to be an advantage, and after winning the championship in his senior year with MVP Finn Hudson and his other teammates, no one could say that everything was handed to him. All the rushing yards records he broke at the University of Florida were because he was just that damn good.
Kurt nervously fiddled with his tie as he sat stiff in his seat, waiting patiently for the next team to make their pick. Next to him was Blaine's father whom Kurt still had a difficult time getting along with, and as of late it seemed like the man gave him even more grief. He believed Kurt was only around because of who Blaine would become. Kurt had learned to put the older Anderson's attitude behind him and focus on how happy he was with Blaine. At the end of the day, their relationship was what mattered, not the opinion of someone who thought James was a decent person.
A man in his suit and tie walked up to the podium. The theater went silent, even the obnoxious football fans behind him as the gentleman spoke. Kurt took a deep breath, staring at the large monitor and waiting with both those in Radio City Musical Hall and the millions watching at home to hear who would be next.
"And for the 23rd pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots pick running back Blaine Anderson."
Kurt smiled and let go of a long breath he wasn't aware he was holding. The crowd erupted – mainly Patriots fans, and Blaine's father and mother shot up to applaud as their son slowly walked onto the stage.
Kurt stood up, staring at the stage with a wide smile on his face. He clapped his hands together as someone behind him slapped his back with excitement.
"Let's go Anderson! Let's go Patriots! Woooo!"
Blaine shook the man's hand and smiled, putting the hat on his head. He held the jersey in front of him as people continued to applaud and posed for photos; the flashes way too bright.
So this was it. He'd be going to Boston to be a running back in the National Football League. He made it. His dream was coming true. As he held the jersey and smiled, he looked into the audience. While Kurt was wearing neutral colors tonight, he still stood out like a sore thumb. He looked like the man Blaine would spend his entire life loving.
…
"Uh, yeah. I don't want to beat you guys over the head with the same clichéd 'things athletes say', but I will say that I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity that the Patriots have provided me with. I'm so excited to be part of this amazing organization and I'm looking forward to bringing another championship to New England next year," he smiled and the reporters ate up the rookie's confidence.
Kurt didn't know how he did it. Many of the journalist had microphones or recorders shoved in his boyfriend's face but Blaine was there, answering their questions with the patience and professionalism that a seasoned veteran of the field possessed. The cameras flashed and Blaine nodded, staying a bit longer than the other draft picks had to answer questions.
"Are there any fans of the Patriots in your family?" one magazine writer questioned. Blaine laughed and started to walk away; the cap still covering his curls.
"They love the Red Sox. I hope that counts. I'm going to get back to my family. Thanks again guys!" he walked away though some still shouted questions, and Kurt watched as Blaine's mother Helen grabbed him into a tight hug. He smiled at the reunion and Blaine's dad patted his son on the shoulder. Some of the other guys who'd been picked still lingered in the lobby. The really tall one that the Raiders had chosen was on the phone, happy tears streaming down his face. Kurt smiled as he looked up and waited for his moment with Blaine.
"We're really proud of you, Blaine. Congrats on New England," his father wrapped his arm around him and Blaine nodded, looking up at Kurt who stood across the lobby with a small albeit proud smile. "I know it isn't as lovely as Florida but you'll fit in nicely."
"Thanks dad. Excuse me –"
"Let's go out to dinner to celebrate," his father continued. Blaine nodded at him.
"Sure, but there's something I need to handle first."
Blaine's parents stood off to the side as they watched him walk off. His mother was still smiling and could barely contain her excitement.
"He made it, Lawrence."
Lawrence nodded, watching his son walk over to Kurt. "He did."
Kurt quickly pulled Blaine into him and they shared the tightest hug either had ever experienced. Blaine's face was buried in his chest as he lifted him a bit, holding the New Yorker close.
"I am so, so very proud of you Blaine Anderson," Kurt was reluctant to pull away but did so after people started to stare. "I'm also proud you didn't get chosen by a team in like… Nevada or something."
Blaine laughed and looked up into the man's eyes. They matched the tie Blaine wore. Totally on purpose. "There's no team in Nevada, baby."
"Even better for us," Kurt let his hands rest on the lapels of his boyfriend's blazer. "I don't want to hog you from your family, though. They're watching."
Blaine placed his hands at Kurt's waist as his heart sped up. "You're just as much as my family, Kurt. Thanks for coming today. I know it must've been hard to sit through this when a Three's Company marathon is on at home, but I appreciate it. I was really nervous."
Kurt smiled, taking the New England hat off of Blaine's head and putting it on his. "Well now there's nothing to worry about."
Blaine smiled. "So are you going to help me pick out apartments in Boston?"
Kurt nodded obviously. "Of course I will. You can't be trusted on your own. Besides, I'll be spending a lot of time there with you."
"I love you."
Kurt kissed his cheek, taking the man's hand. "I love you too, baby. Let's get out of here –"
Blaine held onto Kurt's hand and didn't move. Kurt turned back and smiled, giving him an odd look.
"What are you waiting for, Mr. Patriot? Let's go celebrate."
Blaine took in the sight of Kurt in his new team's hat. "I mean it. I really love you."
Kurt nodded, still holding Blaine's hand. "I know that. I really love you too," he told him with a smile. "More than anything."
"And I want you to spend every day knowing that I'm yours, no matter where you are, or where I am."
There was more applause from inside the theater of Radio City and Kurt smiled as he looked Blaine in the eyes. "I don't doubt us. I'd never doubt us again. Not for one second."
"Good," Blaine used his free hand to dig into his pocket and pulled out a dark blue velvet box. Someone in the vicinity shouted 'oh my god!' as Blaine got down on one knee, and Kurt's eyes went wide when he realized what his boyfriend was doing. They stood there in the lobby with tons of people, some of which were reporters and fans. Blaine opened the box and Kurt gasped when he saw the most beautiful ring with a pale blue diamond in the center. He stopped breathing for a moment.
Blaine's father and mother watched with surprise in the background, Helen clasping both her hands together and trying not to cry of sheer happiness when she saw what her youngest boy was up to. Lawrence however only watched blankly.
"Kurt Hummel," Blaine began with a smile and his boyfriend let go of a shaky breath. "A lot can be and has been said about our relationship in the past, but I'm more concerned with making sure that you know you're the only one I want to spend my future with. I want a million more laughs with you, and I want to slow dance and duet at random just because. I want to wake up next to my best friend through the good and the bad and have you close always, because there's no doubt in my mind that I was made to love you endlessly."
Kurt felt tears welling in his eyes as he looked down at Blaine. His hand was shaking, but the one that Blaine held was secure in the man's embrace.
"I know that I should be proud of what I accomplished here today, but what I'm really proud of is the men that we've become. I'm proud of our love and that despite us telling each other that this was impossible, our hearts and souls disagreed entirely. So, Kurt," Blaine took the ring out and held it up for him to see. "What I'm saying is I want to go into the next chapters of our lives as your husband. Will you marry me?"
"Say yes!" the same voice from earlier shouted. Blaine laughed nervously, holding the ring up for Kurt, and eventually the crowd gathered around them erupted into applause when Kurt said 'yes' and threw himself into Blaine's arms.
"A million times yes," Kurt whispered, smiling as Blaine held him closely and trying not to get the tears on the expensive suit Blaine wore. "God, I love you so much Blaine Anderson."
Blaine pulled away to put the ring on Kurt's left had fourth finger, and then went right back to squeezing him. He told Kurt that he made him the happiest man in the world as Blaine's mother came over to congratulate them. His dad followed suit, shaking Kurt's hand and smiling dryly at his son.
…
"Dad was brave to propose to Papa in front of all of those people," Olivia said, smiling as she held her teddy bear on her lap. Olivia Pope Hummel-Anderson and her brother Stiles Dylan Hummel-Anderson were two 9 year olds who had heard this story more times than they could count.
Stiles was definitely over hearing about how his dads got engaged, but his twin sister always needed to hear about it. Good ol' Uncle Puck could never tell her 'no' unfortunately.
"Your dad is a pretty brave guy," Puck said. "He's like 4 feet tall and in the NFL."
Stiles laughed. "He's not that short, Uncle Puck."
"Tell us about the wedding," Olivia said with a smile. "Last story and I swear I'll go to sleep."
Finn walked into the twins' bedroom with a smile. He'd been listening to the tail end of Puck's story and shaking his head when instead of his niece and nephew going to sleep, they asked for more. "You better. Your fathers will be in soon and you were both supposed to be asleep an hour ago."
"Uncle Finn," Olivia pushed her light brown hair out of her face and sprawled out on the mattress in her pink Patriots pajamas. "Come tell us about the wedding! Please!"
Cooper pushed Finn aside and stepped into the bedroom. "I tell the story best."
"I think not," Finn walked in front of him and plopped down on Stiles' bed behind Puck. Puck had taken to reading the actual bed time story he had picked out for them – the one that had been neglected for Klaine stories because Olivia always had requests. "So, your dads wedding. It was a beautiful day in Florida, like most Florida days are…"
….
Kurt smiled as he leant his forehead against Blaine's. He remembered the day that he'd laugh when someone asked him about marriage, but now he was having his first dance at his wedding to the man he'd move heaven and earth for. Blaine held him closely as they swayed, and Finn and Rachel sang the duet lovely.
What if I told you it was all meant to be?
Would you believe me, would you agree?
Its almost that feeling that we've met before so tell me that you dont think Im crazy when I tell your love is here and now.
A Moment like this.
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.
Some people search forever for that one special kiss.
I cant believe its happening to me.
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.
It was almost like the world stood still when Blaine held him. They'd done this countless times; the whole slow dancing and holding each other closely – in their pajamas or even in the dressing room at a show Kurt was cast for. This was their thing. But today they were sharing their first dance as husbands. Even though they were surrounded by many friends and family, it still felt like no one else was there. It was like that first time all over again.
For a moment like this
Some people wait a lifetime,
For a moment like this
Some people search forever,
For that one special kiss
Oh, I can't believe it's happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime,
For a moment like this
Could this be the greatest love of all
I wanna know that you will catch me when I fall
So let me tell you this...
Some people wait a lifetime
"Finn and Rachel sound amazing, but I want to sing something with you."
Blaine smiled. "Come What May?"
"Come What May." Kurt said with a smile. "You know me really well."
"Well I am your husband."
The reception was the perfect ending to a beautiful day. The ceremony was absolutely perfect. Burt had been caught crying as the two exchanged their vows. He later joked about it being because his son was marrying a member of the New England Patriots instead of the Green Bay Packers, but Kurt knew the real reason. Blaine did too after hugging his father-in-law and having the man say how infinitely proud of him he was.
They had a lovely reception on the beach. Kurt never in a million years thought that he'd have an entire football team boogying down to a Frank Ocean song at his reception when 10 year-old him imagined the day, but here it was. His glee club and NYADA friends were having the times of their lives taking pictures with them and Mike shook his head as he watched Tina flirt with the quarterback and tight end at the same time.
Finn was a big fan of the menu. He was a huge fan of the menu, actually. He laughed as Kurt went to feed his husband a piece of cake and smudged it all across his face, and Blaine did the same to him after chasing the man around the beach for five minutes. They were being true grownups, but most importantly they were being themselves. Blaine's mother looked at her husband and smiled as he watched them.
"James never made our son feel like that. We can't choose who it is that makes his soul happy. That's out of our hands. You know that, right?"
Lawrence nodded. "I know that. You're right, Helen."
Later in the day, the band hired (Sean and Malachi weren't doing too badly in the music industry after all) was kicked off the stage as a couple familiar faces stepped up to the microphone.
"This one here is for Brad and Kevin," the woman said, holding up her champagne glass. "Payback is almost as beautiful as you two are a couple. Hit it!"
The DJ put the song on and Blaine laughed as he realized that Sheila and Robert were about to perform at his wedding. It was the same Sheila and Robert whose wedding he crashed with Kurt before they were officially a thing.
The thing was, Blaine and Kurt could sing. Sheila and Robert… not so much.
"Who are Brad and Kevin?" Artie asked.
Said all I want from you is to see you tomorrow
And every tomorrow, maybe you'll let me borrow your heart
And is it too much to ask for every Sunday
And while we're at it, throw in every other day to start
Robert bounced along to the beat as he took the next part. Kurt laughed, undoing his tie as he sang along.
I know people make promises all the time
Then they turn right around and break them
When someone cuts your heart open with a knife, now you're bleeding
But I could be that guy to heal it over time
And I won't stop until you believe it
'Cause baby you're worth it
Everyone grabbed a partner and started to dance. Kurt found his husband's hand and spun him around; the two proceeding to do goofy dance moves. The photographer snapped tons of photos of the two as Sheila and Robert continued their performance. Rachel shook her head at the vocals, wondering if the duo on stage would let her takeover, but before she could ask, Finn had grabbed her close and pulled her into a kiss.
(They finally got their heads out of their asses too, by the way.)
So don't act like it's a bad thing to fall in love with me
'Cause you might look around and find your dreams come true, with me
Spent all your time and your money just to find out that my love was free
So don't act like it's a bad thing to fall in love with me, me
It's not a bad thing to fall in love with me, me
Kurt and Blaine screamed along to the lyrics too, because Sheila and Robert weren't exactly singing them, and laughed as they had the time of their lives. He pulled his husband close by his undid bowtie and kissed the corner of his lips.
"I love you, Blaine Anderson," Kurt smiled as the wedding party resumed around them. But once again, Blaine was the only one that was there. "You're all that matters."
Blaine looked Kurt in his eyes and smiled. "For always."
"And always," Kurt laughed as Blaine spun him around and started to shout-sing the next verse.
….
"That's beautiful and all," Stiles said. "But you know what's really cool? Dad and Papa have awesome matching tattoos. We never got the story behind that."
Olivia looked at her Uncle Finn for an explanation as Cooper smirked. "Well the story is that they're the corniest couple in the history of couples," Cooper told his niece and nephew.
Puck laughed.
"Not true," Stiles said with a smile. "You're corny –" the pillow hit his face before he could put the 'period' on his sentence and as always, Uncle Cooper and Stiles were play fighting. Puck cleared his throat as Finn joined in on the pillow-flying fun.
"Since those losers are preoccupied," he took a seat on Olivia's bed. "I guess it's up to me to tell you the tattoo story. It all goes back to when Kurt and Blaine were strictly doing the grown up. They weren't boyfriends just yet, but close nonetheless."
Kurt stood in the open doorway and stared at the chaos going on in the room. His brother-in-law had his son on his back and then there was Finn, swatting pillows at the both of them. Olivia and Puck were talking on the other side of the room, and as Blaine slid next to his husband in the entrance, he sighed.
"What do you mean by 'strictly doing the grown up'?" her blue eyes twinkled as she looked at him.
Puck smiled. "Well you see, when a man loves another man –"
"Noah," Kurt warned.
Everyone in the bedroom looked up at Kurt and Blaine standing there, and Stiles' blue eyes went wide as he jumped off of his Uncle Cooper's back and onto the bed. He promptly shoved his Uncle Finn away and got underneath the covers.
Olivia grinned and ran to hug both of her fathers. Blaine smiled, picking her up and then glaring at the supposed adults in the room. "Why are you still up, sweetie?"
"Yeah," Kurt repeated, staring at Puck. "Why?"
"I was just leaving," Cooper got up and walked to the door, squeezing between his brother and the wall. Finn hopped up next and said goodnight to Stiles before kissing Olivia on the cheek on the way out.
Their babysitter shrugged and smiled a bit. "How was the pre-party for the Tony's, fellas?"
"Go home to Quinn, Noah –"
"Will do," Puck got up quickly and left the room. Blaine smiled, shaking his head and walking with his daughter over to her bed.
"What's the 'grown up' thing, dad?"
"Don't worry about it," Blaine told her. Stiles laughed when Kurt sat on his bed and proceeded to tickle him, trying to escape his father's grasp. When he was kissed on the cheek he jokingly grimaced.
"Papa!"
"It's time for bed now, munchkins," Kurt laughed as son wiped the kiss away and gave him another. "Dad and I are going to leave the night light on for you but we want no funny business, ok?"
Stiles nodded, and Olivia smiled as Blaine kissed her on the forehead.
"We love you," Blaine said, and as he went over to kiss Stiles, Kurt went to hug and kiss his little girl.
"We love you too," they said in unison. Stiles turned over in bed and closed his eyes. "Even though you're incredibly affectionate."
Blaine smiled. "Papa and I are going to give you fifty tomorrow night just for that."
"Ha," Olivia said, and Stiles smiled, ignoring them.
"Goodnight," Kurt whispered to them, following his husband out of the room. He smiled at the twins as they either pretended to go to sleep or actually went to sleep. He then closed the door softly, looking at Blaine.
"We need to look for a new babysitter."
Blaine smiled, pulling Kurt close by his belt loop. "We'll do it tomorrow. Right now we need to go and get in bed," he kissed his husband's neck and the man bit his lip. "So I can enjoy how exclusive we are."
Kurt giggled, kissing Blaine's lips and unbuttoning his shirt. "Let's go do the grown up. Are you going to do me like I'm your five-day boyfriend?"
Blaine shook his head no as he worked at Kurt's belt; the two of them laughing as they stumbled into their bedroom. "I'm going to do you like you're my husband."
"Ah, even better," Kurt said with a chuckle. He bounced when he hit the mattress and then Blaine was in between his legs. "I really love being exclusive."
Blaine kissed him softly. "I told you so."
