Beep. Beep. Beep.
Both machines were sounding steadily, symbolizing the steady beat of both boys' hearts. Cooper Anderson paced the room, a steady sweat soaking his body. Occasionally he'd massage his temples or collapse into a chair, sobbing into his hands. The fact that both boys' monitors were beeping together often got to him, usually causing tearful outbreaks when he thought about it.
"Mr. Anderson?" The pretty Latina nurse was gentle in her knocking, knowing that Cooper had asked for a Tylenol earlier due to a headache.
Now, at any other time there were many things that Cooper Anderson would've done in this situation. One, he would've totally hit on the gorgeous nurse, even though she was obviously nearly 10 years older than him. Two, he would've told her off for calling him the name his father was so often called. That was something he and Blaine had in common, the hatred for the name, "Mr. Anderson." And three, he would've probably been a bit nicer than he was about to be.
"What?" He hissed, not in the mood.
She seemed to understand and quietly shuffled over to the boy, placing a friendly hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, I know you might not want anyone right now, but there are visitors here for Kurt and Blaine."
Cooper cringed at the name of his brother and his boyfriend. "If they're my parents, you can tell them to go somewhere else and stay the fuck-"
"No, honey," the woman cut him off and opened the curtain that sufficed as a door to the room. Two girls stood there. Cooper recognized one as Alice, Blaine's best, and sometimes only, friend at school. The other one looked familiar but he couldn't place a finger on it. "This is Alice," she gestured at the girl with glasses. Cooper nodded and smiled as best as he could, he knew Alice was a good person. "And this," the nurse added with a bit of noticeable tension, "is Angel."
Before anyone could continue, the oldest Anderson brother jumped out of his seat. "No! Absolutely not! Get out! Alice, you are free to stay, but she is not welcome here."
The nurse tried to keep the peace, not wanting to call security in such a tragic situation. "Now, I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm sure we could figure something out. I just don't think that now is really the best time to be-"
Before she could finish, Cooper was already by Blaine's bed, ready to press for security. "I will call if she doesn't leave." The nurse began to head for the kiosk in the middle of the nurse's station, but Angel nodded sadly to let her know it wouldn't be necessary. She brushed her fingers under Blaine's chin before she left, then leaned to gently pat Cooper's arm. "I do care about him, you know." Cooper just shrugged her off.
Expecting her back, Cooper stayed wide awake long after Alice left. Angel, however, didn't return at all that day. She didn't return for a very long time.
Burt, Finn, Carole, and some members of the New Directions came to visit. Even some Warblers and other people from Boston showed up, surprising Cooper. Of course, the Hummel-Hudson family members stayed for nearly half the month, but Cooper insisted that they go home, saying that he'd let them know if anything big happened to either of the boys.
When the Anderson parents came, Emily stayed for about a weeks' time, but eventually left. Cooper noticed her hair was even grayer than it had been the last time he'd seen her. Kevin Anderson refused to say anything; he seemed to stick his nose up at Kurt and barely even looked at his son, as if he was a bug on the windshield of the freshly washed car that was his life. Cooper had trouble keeping his mouth shut about where his father could stick the windshield wiper of that car.
When Kevin finally left, Cooper decided it was time that he left the hospital and slept at home one night. It had been nearly a month since the accident and he figured that sleeping well for one night, freshening up, and bringing new clothes wouldn't hurt.
At 2 am, however, he got the call about Blaine and Kurt. He expected the worst, but was nearly jumping up and down when he found out that the boys had both awoken from their induced comas. They were complaining of pain, but with a bit of medicine they were sitting up and smiling. Cooper laughed a bit too hysterically when the nurse told him that the boys had both denied sleep saying, "We've been asleep for a month, haven't we?!"
-3 months later-
"Oh, Kurt Hummel, you are SO on!" Blaine raised an eyebrow and spun around in his wheelchair. Artie had stopped by the hospital the week before and taught the boys some tricks for their new wheelchairs. The two boys were sitting at the end of a long, deserted hallway.
"Bring it!" Kurt diva snapped and pulled on his break release. "Mercedes taught me that one." He snapped repeatedly and Blaine reached over and slapped his hand away.
The accident had fractured the boys' spines. However, Blaine was a worse case than Kurt. Since he'd jumped in an attempt to protect his boyfriend, he'd gotten the worst of the blow. Kurt was sure to be able to walk again, but Blaine's physical abilities would probably never be the same. Blaine had asked, though, groggily on medical pills, if they would ever be able to have sex again. Kurt had to stop his giggles, not being as drugged up as Blaine, but not wanting to seem unsupportive. "Uhm, uh, yes, I believe so," the female nurse had stammered, running out of the room for a doctor.
Now, however, the wheelchair races were set to begin. They pushed their wheels down the hallway. By the end, both boys' arms were exhausted.
"You win, you win," Kurt laughed, gently flopping his arms at Blaine in a gesture of defeat." I am SO glad I don't have to deal with this forever!" He exclaimed, out of breath. Blaine, however, sighed miserably and began to roll away. "Honey, what's wrong? Blaine? Stop!" But Blaine didn't stop. He just kept going. "I'm sorry if that upset you."
Blaine sassily spun his wheelchair around to face Kurt. His eyes were red and puffy, his words choking with tears. "It's just, you don't know how it feels, Kurt, to have them tell you that you just might have to be in this damn thing all your life!"
"I'm sorry..." Kurt's once smiling face began to swarm with tears.
"Oh god, baby," Blaine wheeled over and affectionately patted Kurt's knee. He wanted to get really close, but he couldn't. Kurt, however, was insistent on being in Blaine's arms. He clumsily climbed over onto Blaine's lap. "You didn't have to-"
"Shh," Kurt cooed and lifted a finger to Blaine's lips. He rested his head on his boyfriend's chest and began to sob. "We never got to go to church together, Blaine! You wanted to go so bad and now..." He gestured to the hospital and wheelchairs around them.
"There's a chapel here, how about we go tomorrow? It might not be the same, but they'll probably be pretty accepting. Maybe," he chuckled a little and brushed Kurt's hair out of his eyes, "They'll let us come back after the fact if we like it." When he felt Kurt's giggle, he sighed, raised his eyebrows, and his smile faded to a simple grin. "Plus, I think that God must really like us if we survived that."
"I think you're right, Blaine. Let's go to chapel tomorrow morning." Kurt stroked Blaine's curls, which had long since lost their gel. "Wheel me back home?"
"To our room, you mean?" Blaine pulled on his break.
"Yeah, that's what I mean. I wish we could go home, though." Kurt sighed deeply again.
"Me too, baby, me too." The boys rolled back to the room together. Blaine asked a confused nurse to bring the extra wheelchair back. They heard yelling coming from their room, which induced throbbing headaches in both of them. They'd had minimal, constant pain in their heads since the accident, but a migraine could be brought on by the simplest thing, especially for Kurt. Even though Blaine might be stuck in a wheelchair all his life, his headaches were getting better. He felt bad for Kurt, who was told that the migraines would probably last all his life.
"Oh, god, I recognize that voice," Blaine said about the female voice and gasped as the curtain was pushed back for them. He massaged his temples and closed his eyes. He whispered something in Kurt's ear, whose eyes grew wide with horror.
"Angel?"
