"Okay, Elizabeth, one more push!"
Elizabeth Hummel was having a baby. Her husband Burt stood over her, holding her hand. "It's okay baby," he would kiss her forehead and brush her head away.
In the room next to theirs, another young mom was going through the same thing. "Come on, Mrs. Anderson, you can do this!" Her husband wasn't there. He was on a business trip and didn't want to lose his deal. She said a silent prayer as she pushed one last time.
Both mothers panted and smiled down at their beautiful babies.
"What's his name?" A sweet nurse would ask both of them.
"Kurt," Burt would smile.
"Blaine," Mrs. Anderson would brush her baby's nose.
"Blaine, stop, you're not supposed to be running in church!" A four year old Kurt was chasing after his best friend in the hallway. Their mothers had bible study on Tuesday nights, so the two boys were playing in the nursery. The next day, they were going to start their first day of Kindergarten together.
Blaine giggled and locked the door to the nursery before Kurt could get there. He'd forgotten that there was another nursery, for the babies, on the other side. It was only separated by a curtain. Kurt knocked for a moment before he realized this as well and tumbled through the curtain, tackling Blaine. They both exploded in fits of laughter and then stayed silent, lying on the floor next to each other.
"Blaine?" Kurt turned his head and brushed Blaine's shoulder.
"Yeah, Kurt?"
"We have to move into the big kids class next week."
"Yeah."
"I'm scared. There are really big kids in there."
"Kurt," Blaine sat up and hugged Kurt. "We're gonna be together! Come on, we were born together, we're gonna stay together too!"
"You're right," Kurt closed his eyes and hugged him back. "I don't wanna grow up."
"Me neither."
"I told my daddy that and he said that's okay."
"My daddy says that's stupid. He says being a child is awful and annoying."
"That's silly." Kurt brushed Blaine's curls. "We're gonna learn about grown up stuff once we get into the big kids class! My daddy says that learning about grown up stuff doesn't mean you have to grow up."
"It doesn't?"
"No, he says that even though he's a big man he's never really grown up." Kurt giggled, "He says he's still a little kid inside."
"Really?" Blaine was filled with childhood innocence.
"Yup," Kurt nodded as smart looking as he could and put a finger to where his daddy had shown him his heart is, "Right in there!"
"That's really cool, Kurt. I wish my daddy was like that."
"I wish your daddy was like that too. Maybe he is."
"I don't think so," Blaine looked at the floor as they stood up.
Kurt just stared for a second. "Our mommy's are probably done. Let's go, Blaine!" He grabbed Blaine's hand and pulled him, running up the stairs.
"Boys, you know that running in the church isn't allowed," Elizabeth tried to scold them but broke into a grin at their giggling and tapped their noses. "You two are growing up so fast! Let's go to the car, Blaine's mommy is waiting for us!"
The two boys walked hand in hand to the care. Elizabeth smiled knowingly, but didn't say anything as they climbed into the car. Kurt scooted right over next to Blaine. "I'm cold!" He whined.
"Cold?" Blaine's mom laughed. "It's summer, you two are just going back to school. This is Ohio, not the North Pole!" She winked at the boys. "Are you guys excited about moving into the big kids class when you go to Sunday School next week?"
"Yes, ‘cause we're gonna be together like always," Kurt patted Blaine's knee.
On the way home, Kurt asked if Blaine could stay over. "Pleaaase!" He whined.
Elizabeth chuckled. "Not tonight, boys. You've got school in the morning."
"Oh yeah! We get to spend all day together. I hope we're in the same class. I really want to be in the same class."
This time is was Mrs. Anderson who chuckled at Kurt. "Boys, how many times have we told you that you are in the same class?"
"Oops," Kurt giggled. "I forgot. Mommy, Blaine's asleep." Blaine had fallen asleep on Kurt's shoulder. When they arrived at their driveway, Elizabeth helped carry Blaine inside. They said goodnight, Kurt gently rubbed Blaine's curls, and the Andersons went upstairs. They lived in a two story apartment complex. Blaine's family lived on top, Kurt's on the bottom. Mr. Anderson could afford better, but insisted that their money be saved instead of spent on housing. That made Kurt and Blaine very happy because they could be together all the time. There were even stairs that led to Kurt's window from a door in Blaine's room. Kurt's mom made sure to lock the child safety lock on the window before kissing him goodnight.
The next morning, Kurt and Blaine smiled for pictures. Blaine kissed Kurt's cheek and Kurt blushed. He wasn't sure why because that's what happens when girls kiss you, isn't it? He really liked girly things. So did Blaine. But Elizabeth always gave them the toys they wanted, while Mrs. Anderson bought them trucks and cars. Kurt wasn't sure why.
During school, Blaine and Kurt spent every moment together. The teacher even noticed how close they were. It was very special, Kurt thought, because everyone else was finding a best friend and he already had one.
On the bus ride home that day, Kurt and Blaine talked about all the stuff they did. The teacher commented on how well they sang the alphabet song. Kurt thought that was silly because everyone should know how to sing properly. He had taught Blaine, so maybe, he thought, he could teach everyone else.
The two boys ran, backpacks bobbing up and down, into their mother's hugs. "We're going to have dinner together tonight!" Elizabeth announced after embracing both boys.
"Yay!" Kurt and Blaine shouted.
When Burt got home, they ate dinner and the boys talked all about their day and their teacher who they really liked, but she smelled like cheese. The adults had to try very hard not to die laughing and quickly told the boys that what they said wasn't very Christian-like.
"Okay, but everybody thinks so," Kurt insisted.
"Yeah, but we're sorry," Blaine apologized and Kurt followed.
"You don't have to do everything everyone else does," Elizabeth assured the boys and they finished dinner in silence.
Blaine and his mom went upstairs, but when Blaine wanted to take his bath, his mom stopped him. "We need to have a talk, bud."
"What's wrong, Mommy? Am I in trouble?"
"No, it's okay. We just need to talk about Kurt."
Blaine was confused. "You mean like what I should get him for our birthday on the 18th? Because I think-"
Mrs. Anderson cut him off, "No, we're shopping this weekend, honey. I want to talk about what happened before school. Do you remember?"
"Well I got up and I took my pajamas off and then-"
"No, no. When we went down to see Kurt."
"Well, we hugged and then I hugged Elizabeth and then you hugged me and then we took tons of pictures."
"Anything else?"
"Oh yeah! I kissed him on the cheek for one of Elizabeth's pictures."
"And what did you think about that?"
"I dunno. He was really warm and he got red when I did it. I think I did too. But we're best friends, so that's okay, right?"
"Well, Blaine, actually, you'll learn when you get older that some boys don't just like girls like normal. Some boys just like boys and some boys like both girls and boys."
"Oh. Can I be that way?"
"Well, it's said to be wrong in the Bible. It's something you choose, Blaine. People who choose to be that way are sinners."
"Then I don't want to be that way!"
"Good, Blaine. Go get undressed, okay honey? You can pick out what you want to wear tomorrow."
"Okay!"
Meanwhile, downstairs, a conversation of the same respect was going on.
"Hey, Kurt, bud, can we talk?" His parents were standing at his doorway while he looked at the pictures in a magazine his mom had given him.
"Okay!" He jumped up and sat cross-legged on his bed. Burt chuckled and Elizabeth leaned down next to him.
Burt started the conversation. "Your mommy told me that Blaine kissed you this morning."
"On the cheek!" Kurt protested, afraid he was in trouble for kissing.
"Honey, you're not in trouble. We just want to know how you feel about it."
"It made me feel really warm and fuzzy. I was really happy and I want that feeling to last forever. But that's how girls should make me feel."
"Kurt," Burt looked his son in the eye, "However you are is fine with us. You can like boys, you can like both boys and girls, it doesn't matter. We will always love you."
Elizabeth jumped in. "Many Christians will call you a sinner if you like boys, Kurt. But you aren't. God loves you and God wants you to be happy, okay? Whoever you are, that's what God wanted you to be."
Kurt was a little confused, but he just smiled. "Okay Mommy."
Elizabeth hugged her son. "See you in the morning, honey!"
Burt patted Kurt's shoulder and flipped the light switch.
Kurt fell asleep quickly, but Blaine lie awake.
He kept asking himself, ‘What if I like boys?"
Blaine woke his brother Cooper in the bed next to him. "Coop, what if I'm not normal?"
"Why did you wake me up to ask me that, Blaine?"
"I dunno."
"Go to sleep."
"I can't."
"We'll talk tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay Cooper."
"Don't call me Cooper."
"Cooper. Cooper. Cooper."
"Blaine, SHUT UP!"
"Cooper. Cooper. Cooper."
"I am going to kill you!"
"BOYS!" A yell came from the living room. "Don't make me come in there!"
"Goodnight Coop."
"Goodnight, Blaine."
