“No, no... it was me. I wasn’t looking. I just grabbed for the door. I tend to get distracted and default into thinking I own these halls.” Kurt joked lamely, desperately hoping the other boy didn’t see how red his face was or hear how much his already high voice squeaked and wobbled.
His savior only grinned a bit, strong hands still on Kurt’s biceps. “Why don’t we just agree it was both our faults and move on?” Then his hands loosened their grip and Kurt felt just a little more empty than he had moments before. Was it as silly as he thought it was to have felt warm and safe and right just from the touch of his hands?
“I can work with that.” Kurt admitted with a gentle smile. God, this boy was seriously one of the most handsome people he’d ever had the pleasure of meeting in person. Those eyes were to die for and his smile...
“Blaine Anderson. I’m new here.” The other boy said, offering his hand to Kurt politely and there was that charming grin again.
“Oh, I know...” The words had left his lips before he could stop them. Yes, that’s right Kurt, make the gorgeous boy in front of you think you’re nuts. “I mean, Kurt Hummel. Pleasure to meet you, Blaine,” He took his hand then, shaking it firmly twice.
“I was just going to fetch a paper from the printer in here,” Kurt explained even though Blaine hadn’t asked for an explanation. After all, Kurt had every right to be in this hall.
Blaine smiled again, laughing a bit. “Well, don’t let me stop you. One quick question though,” He paused and unfolded a white cane that had been hanging from a strap around his wrist. How had Kurt not noticed that? “Could you tell me where the choir room is? I’d like to talk to someone about an audition.”
Kurt blinked, staring for a moment at the cane before realizing Blaine had asked him a question. “The choir room? Oh! I’m headed back there once I get my paper. I can show you...”
“Great!” Blaine enthused happily, content to wait for his new tour guide.
“Just give me a second, I’ll be right back.” Kurt promised and moved past Blaine, slipping into the classroom.
He smiled at Miss Fields, the special ed teacher and gave a little wave to the class as he grabbed up his piece of paper, “As you were...” He joked with her softly and then headed back out the door. Blaine was there, waiting patiently, his long fingers toying with the strap of his walking stick.
“Do you mind if I take your arm? It’s a little easier than just trying to guess where you are.” Blaine asked, joking gently. It was what he did, a bit of a defense mechanism really. People didn’t seem to react as badly to his disability when he made light of it.
“Oh! Yeah, sure... I didn’t, umm... well, I didn’t want to ask or offer or assume anything. You seemed pretty capable on your own but I guess that makes sense.” Kurt said, laughing nervously. Blaine was going to be touching him?!
Blaine reached out, one strong hand running down Kurt’s arm until he grasped his elbow gently. Kurt smiled a bit even if he wasn’t really sure what was going on or if he needed to walk slower or anything. “Lead on, kind sir!” Blaine grinned.
“Right. Okay, well...” Kurt paused a moment, trying to think of the best way to ask without sound either like an idiot or like he was judging or assuming Blaine couldn’t do things, “I, well, do you need me to walk slower or something? I’m sorry, I’ve just never met anyone... like you before.” He winced as soon as he’d said it, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean, I just... okay, I’m going to shut up now. I’m so sorry...”
Blaine was laughing though, grinning brightly. “Kurt, it’s okay. How are you supposed to learn if you don’t ask? It’s fine, really. You’ve honestly been one of the first people to talk to me that hasn’t assumed I need help with everything. Just walk a little slower than you usually would, I can keep up, but if you’d tell me before we get to any stairs, that’d be great.”
Kurt flushed red. Seriously, Blaine was so charming and adorable. He nodded a bit before realizing Blaine wouldn’t know, “Right. I can do that. Let’s go.” He said and started off just slightly slower than he normally walked which he hoped wasn’t too fast. He tended to almost sprint most places. Part of being high-strung, he supposed.
Laughing softly as they walked, Blaine kept up just fine but he did tease Kurt a little, “This is slower? Do you usually run everwhere?”
Being Kurt, however, he slowed more, worried it was too fast still. “Too fast? Sorry, I just tend to forget that I’m almost running places... my dad says I’m high-strung.” High-maintenance too, but he didn’t need to broadcast that right away.
Smiling still, Blaine laughed a little more, “It’s fine, you’re fine, I get tired of people pretending we’re snails when I walk with them. High-strung, huh? I can see that...”
Kurt laughed a little himself and then they were at the choir room. “Lucky for us, no stairs on this trip. Here we are. Now, our director’s not here right now, you’re welcome to wait. He should be back before next period, or I can just tell him you stopped by. You wanted to audition for one of our choirs, right?”
“Right, and I didn’t know what your glee club was like, I was in one at my old school...” Blaine said as they stood near the door of the choir room.
“Oh, well, our show choir is audition only, the year before. You could talk to our director but I’m not sure... well, we do a lot of choreography too.” He said, again not wanting to assume and offend Blaine.
Blaine nodded, “Right, maybe if you guys have a stage crew? I can stand off stage and hand props, look pretty.” He smiled a bit.
Kurt had to laugh, “You could definitely do that.”
“Well, thank you.” He grinned at Kurt and put out his cane, wandering about the room to get an idea of what it was like, “I think I’ll stay until your director gets back. You sound like you could use some company.”
“Oh, thanks. You don’t have to though.” Kurt smiled, turning red. Speaking of which... where was Rachel?
Blaine found himself a seat at the piano and folded up his cane, sitting it on the tray above where the music normally would rest. His long, graceful fingers danced over the keys a moment, getting a feel for them before he started to play. Blaine was quite the pianist, Kurt found. He was engrossed, listening, imagining them somewhere else, not in the middle of the McKinley high choir room.
He could see them, enjoying the sound of the rain on the side of a coffee shop while in New York City. They didn’t have any classes so they were just enjoying a little time together, having some coffee and sharing a cookie. He smiled faintly, just listening, imaginging. This, he thought, this he could get used to. He was very glad he’d met Blaine.
