Gathering up his luggage from the drop-off, Kurt made his way over to the sliding doors at the front of the transparent airport. His heart was beating at the speed of 1000 turbines, he was nervous.
Kurt had worried about his father and leaving him all alone since his original attack. If it really had been so long and his health kept declining, Kurt felt instantly ashamed he hadn't been here in Lima as often as he could have been.
But Kurt had priorities, mostly his classes, and he knows that Burt understands. Kurt texted Blaine a quick message to let him know he landed safely, then texted Finn to let him know he was coming out now. Looking for your ride after you go outside is always the worst part. There's so many cars and so much traffic, it's almost impossible to navigate. Blaine texted back right away, asking Kurt to call him when he got settled.
The two men's relationship had quickly sprung into something enchanted. They were constantly in each other's prescence, their love radiating around the room, making every day brighter and better. Somehow they had managed to balance out coursework, finals, and Blaine's minor role on Broadway. He had negeotiated his way into a new, upcoming play called: The Outside of the World debuting in June. Although he was not a main character, he was in 2 entire Acts.
Kurt was on his way to starting his Junior year in college, he had Sophomore finals in 3 weeks and then he was done until September. Shooting for the stars, he wanted to be able to graduate Junior year by finishing all of the requirements to obtain his Masters Degree in Theatrical Arts. After Kurt's long educational years, he was ready to land an actual job in playwriting/scripting.
Finn's lound horn immediately snapped Kurt out of his train of thought, urging him to run with his two bags of luggage to the Ford pick-up.
Finn hopped out quickly, giving a brief greeting and popping the trunk to slide Kurt's sleek suitcases into the back.
Kurt launched himself into the passenger seat as he watched Finn ever the gentleman haul his luggage away. Kurt put on his Ray-Ban sunglasses, reclined and started to relax. He had been under a lot of tension lately, and it felt good to just sit down and enjoy the calm before the storm. It was May now, and the luscious flowers were beginning to bloom all around the airport. Waiting for Finn to hop back in, he examined his new, growing natural tan that was forming on his arms. Damn, I look fine. Kurt thought. He hated fake tans, they looked raunchy and resembled the color of rotten oranges and even tomatoes.
"Jesus Christ Kurt, your bags literally weigh more than an elephant." Finn huffed as he started the truck, sliding his buckle into the clip as he sat down.
"They're nothing compared to the mountain of food you hammer onto your plate each night, Finn Hudson." Kurt snapped back, a sly grin planted on his face.
"Hey, I've been dieting lately!" Finn exclaimed, glancing in the sideview mirror to pull out onto the highway.
"On what, cotton candy and pure sugar?" Kurt laughed whole-heartedly, a slight hint of teasing in his voice.
"Haha, so funny." He mumbled, as he adjusted his position in his seat, beginning the short drive to the Hummel-Hudson home.
"So hows it been around here? I haven't seen you in ages." Kurt reminsced, turning his head to view the old style scenery passing by them quickly.
"It's been decent, I guess. Dad's shop has been hectic. I'm still not an expert and people just keep coming in, but at least you know..business is booming. There's also one other thing.." Finn looked over quickly and flashed the brightest smile Kurt had ever seen when he mentioned the last part, and Kurt eyed him skeptically.
"Finn Hudson if you don't tell me right this second.." Kurt began, ready to verbally attack Finn with a slue of words.
"I proposed to Rachel." He said, gluing his eyes to the road ahead of him, preparing to defend himself from any mention of hatred toward their relationship.
"No way! That's great, Finn!" Kurt felt truly happy for him, and slightly relieved it wasn't something else too bad. Of course Kurt thought the situation was slightly ridiculous, considering the fact they were both stuck here with their families, but he understood they were in love. They had been for numerous years and now and damn, it was about time!
"And the wedding is in 3 days." Finn annouced, his face turning a quiet hint of pale.
Now THAT was ridiculous.
"I'm sorry, did you just say three days!?" Kurt exclaimed, eyeing his step-brother crazily.
"Well, we knew that this would be the last time you'd be able to visit for a while, same with everyone else in town, and you know.. if something happens to Burt.. We want him there."
Kurt sighed as he attempted to shake all negative thoughts about his father from impending into his mind. However, Kurt was incredibly unprepared for the upcoming event. He needed time to diva-nize.
"I understand, I guess. I'm excited." Were the last words that were spoken for the last 2 minutes of the drive, the sentence hanging in the air as if further discussion was not needed.
Kurt's eyes lit up with a tone of sadness combined with the rush of anxiety flooding out of his veins as his eyes poured upon his father's figure in the hospital bed.
"Hey, bud.." Burt said, smiling as best as he could with the oxygen wires attached to his nose.
"Hi, Dad." Kut smiled back at him, walking over to take a seat in the brown armchair next to the metal bed.
"Well, give your old man a hug!" Burt said, trying to sit up in the uncomfortable position, opening his arms to signal Kurt.
Kurt opened his arms as well, and embraced the brawny arms of his weakening father. The squeeze was delicate and short, just a slight cue of affection.
"How you feeling, dad?" Kurt grabbed his father's pale, veiny hand that was resting on his stomach.
"Better, waiting for my dinner. What's it take to get a sandwich around here?"
"Are you managing your diet?" Kurt sighed, "Because you know grease doesn't help when it comes to slopping it on food."
"I know I know, Carole's been doing a wonderful job at playing healthy chef." Burt smiled, squeezing his son's tiny hand gently.
Their conversation carried on for a few more hours, alternating topics from college to bacon and even venturing on Kurt's slightly more active love life. Soon later though, which only felt like a mere 5 minutes, Kurt was escorted out of them room when tests needed to be run on Burt's prolonged condition to assure he'd be out for the wedding.
They hugged goodbye with promises to catch up right away, Kurt pulled out his cell phone to text Blaine. He needed him right now. Kurt could see through his father's declining health better than a stupid x-ray machine. His eyelids were heavy, painted black and purple all around. His skin was the lightest shade of white and the only gleam that danced in his eyes was when Carole or Kurt strolled in. Kurt knew his father's heart didn't have too much time to keep beating, but Kurt wanted to absorb every last sound of it.
The old, gray-haired priest eyed Finn Hudson with a piercing glare as he spoke aloud to the small group gathered outside the Hudson-Hummel backyard.
"Do you, Finn Hudson, take Rachel Berry to be your lawfully wedded wife?" He asked as the ringboy (Rachel's younger cousin) walked up the aisle to deliever the golden bands of eternal love.
"I, Finn Hudson, take you, Rachel Berry for my lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for poorer. In sickness and health, until death do us part. I promise to honor you with my heart everyday, to shower you with every ounce of love I can pour from my soul. I vow to never stop believing in our forever." Finn annouced, keeping his eyes locked tight on Rachel's, filled to the brim with a heart-filled stare.
His proclamation of love earned tears from the entire group of people. Mostly family and a few new collected friends, while the old tribe of the Glee club was present in their own section at the front. Mercedes, Quinn, Sam, Puck, Kurt, Artie, Tina, Mike and even Mr. Schuester. The best ladies: Rachel's other cousin, Mercedes and Quinn all stood in glorious gowns off to the right of the stage. The best men included Kurt, Burt and Puck who looked ever so dapper in tight-fitting gray suits on the opposite side of the stage.
Finn lifted Rachel's soft, delicate hands and slid the beautiful golden band onto her ring-finger.
She smiled with tears dripping out of her eyes as she waited for her cue.
"Do you, Rachel Berry, take Finn Hudson to be your lawfully wedded husband?" He looked over at her, smiling as he placed the closed Bible across his chest.
"I, Rachel Berry, take you, Finn Hudson to be my lawful husband. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health until death do us part. I solemnly swear with all of my honest heart to love you equally back, even more, every single day. My love for you will continue to grow until it cannot possibly become greater. I have loved you since the first time we shared a glance, and I have never stopped. I promise to always be faithful and deserving of your care, and to never let you out of my heart's tight grasp." She smiled widely as her voice cracked on the last line while she placed the ring onto Finn's thick ring finger.
"By the power vested in me from the state of Ohio, I pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride." He stepped away from the podium to allow the newly wedded couple to clash lips in peace.
The entire crowd erupted in applause, and dozens of flowers began to shower over the tiny gazebo Finn and Rachel were gathered in.
This is absolutely beautiful. Kurt thought, watching the group grow more excited and hyped up as Finn and Rachel deepened the kiss. They began to walk down the aisle after the parted, with the bridal parties following close behind. Kurt caught eyes with his father, and they both smiled at each other. Kurt knew then, that he desired nothing more than to have his father sit right up front during his own wedding.
The after ceremony was absolutely equisite, the small collection of people dancing and sharing songs in kareoke. Rachel even managed to get him on stage for a duet, which was only mildly embarassing and everybody seemed genuinely happy. The only thing missing from this wonderful evening was the boy everyone seemed to question Kurt about, his abscence a mystery among the crowd. But Kurt had been texting him nonstop the entire night, right down until he tipsy-ly pranced into his bedroom, the thoughts of the night still fresh in his mind.
Kurt grabbed his iPhone to type out a quick goodnight text to his boyfriend.
"Goodnight, Blaine. I'll text you when I wake up tomorrow. I'm going shopping :)" Kurt 2:30AM.
He rested his phone on the bedside table in his old bedroom, breathing in the ever familiar scent that was slowly fading away over the long years. Kurt tried to resist the urge to glance at the screen when it dinged loudly, but gave in really quickly.
"Goodnight, Kurt. I love you." Blaine 2:31AM.
Kurt's eyes must've burned into his cell phone because he spent the next 10 minutes staring wide-eyed at the small but ultimately massive words glowing on his screen. He quickly remembered that he didn't want Blaine to begin to worry about not feeling the same way, so he typed back an "I love you too."
As he laid back down in his bed to wrap himself up in the covers he missed so much, he drifted off to sleep with the largest smile ever sewn into his lips.
