Kurt still had no idea of what happened yesterday. In a second, he was taking a slushie to the face, and in the other he was talking to Blaine under the bleachers. And that thing before Kurt left! Blaine was smiling and being adorable and saying stuff about Kurt knowing his name and what the hell was that?
He was just being nice. It didn't mean anything.
Somehow Kurt convinces himself that, in fact, Blaine was just trying to help. It didn't mean anything more than that and he isn't letting himself see more than the reality in the situation. He was just a nice guy trying to help and that's it.
The only problem was that Kurt had Blaine's clothes and he had no idea of how to approach the boy to give them back. He really wanted to thank him again, but he avoided thinking about it until he had to face Blaine during lunch.
Kurt's plan was to walk to his table, give him his clothes and thank him for being so nice the day before. But when he arrived at the lunchroom, Blaine was sitting in a table full of jocks and his girlfriend was practically on his lap, an arm around his shoulder and a big smile on her lips. Blaine was holding her by the waist and nodding to something one of the guys were saying, and there was no way Kurt was going to interrupt that. Plus, if he talked to Blaine in front of everyone like that, the other boy was so, so screwed.
So he walked past them and found Mercedes sitting alone at their usual spot.
"Hey, 'Cedes," Kurt greets, sitting opposite to her and grabbing his apple.
"Hey," she smiles, taking a bite of her cupcake. "So, what's up?"
Kurt shrugs, eyes unconsciously flying to where Blaine's sitting. A shiver runs through his spine when he realizes Blaine is already looking at him, and when their eyes meet, Kurt offers a small smile. Blaine smiles back and turns to look at Rachel again, smiling up at her when she starts carressing his hair.
Kurt averts his eyes rapidly, looking at his plate.
"Nothing, really. You?"
"Same."
Kurt hummed and they both went back to their lunches. While he plays with the food on his plate, not really interested in eating any of it, he can't help but get a glimpse of Blaine again. The boy looked happy, laughing at some of his friends, Rachel sitting fully on his lap now; and Kurt's mind goes back to the day before, how Blaine helped him without being asked... So he shakes his head, pushing the thought out of his mind and concentrating completely on his lunch.
"We're boring." Mercedes' voice sounds annoyed, and Kurt almost jumps in surprise. He kind of forgot she was there too.
"What? We're not boring."
"Yes, we are! Look at us, Kurt. We have nothing new to tell each other and we used to always have news. Like, always. And what have we been doing lately? We study together at your place and that's it. We don't even talk anymore."
Kurt thinks about it, and it doesn't take him long to realize that, shit. She's right. They're boring.
Incredibly so.
"Oh my God."
"I know."
"We're boring."
"I know." Mercedes all but throws the rest of her cupcake on the table and looks at Kurt. "Here's what's going to happen. You and I are going out this weekend."
"Mercedes–"
"Shut up. There's a party at Anthony's house this Saturday, and guess what? I was invited."
"What? And you didn't tell me? Mercedes, this is news!" He stares at his friend and shakes his head. Anthony is on the football team and seems to be a decent guy, so it makes sense that he would invite Mercedes. "You're insane."
"Still. I'm coming, and you're coming with me."
"I wasn't invited."
"Anthony told me I could bring a friend."
"I don't think–"
"No. You're coming with me. Just think about the fantastic outfit you get to wear!"
Kurt smiles warmly at her, and drops his fork. "Okay."
Mercedes squeals excitedly. "Really?"
"Really."
"You're the best!" She takes Kurt's hands from across the table and gives him a squeeze.
"And you only noticed that now?" He teases, and she slaps him playfully on the arm. "So, we're going. Let's not be boring anymore."
The thing about parties is that half of the people there get really, really drunk (which means they don't remember a thing the day after) and the other half really doesn't give a damn. Blaine is one of those who doesn't give a damn, which brings him to where he is now. He's standing with a group of jocks, watching them drink and laugh and talk about girls, and really, he couldn't feel less interested. So he nods at them before walking towards an empty sofa, sipping at his punch while he makes himself comfortable.
Although he feels a little guilty for being happy with Rachel's absence, – she had some math test coming so she couldn't make it to the party – Blaine can't help but breathe a lot better without the girl under his arm. It can be really suffocating, summed up with the self-hatred feeling he gets every single day for lying and pretending.
But now is not the time nor place to think about it. So he keeps drinking his punch – not really caring if it was spiked or not – and starts playing with a loose thread of his sleeve.
And that's when he sees him. Kurt was sitting next to Mercedes while the girl talked animatedly to Anthony, the party's host. He seemed bored, and if Blaine could read his mind, he was almost sure he would listen something like, what am I doing here?
Blaine laughs at himself and shakes his head. He isn't sure if it was the alcohol – okay, so the punch was definitely spiked – or if he was really just going insane, but in the next second he sees himself crossing the room and walking towards where Kurt's sitting. The boy doesn't move, just keeps playing with the straw on his cup, not acknowledging Blaine's presence; so Blaine tries to be as casual as possible when he sits next to him.
"I didn't think I'd see you here, of all places," he almost shouts in order to be heard over the loud music, biting his lip when Kurt jumps in surprise and looks at him.
"H- Hi!" The boy stutters and clears his throat. "Hi, Blaine."
"Hi," Blaine smiles and nods towards Mercedes and Anthony. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but these two seem to like each other."
Kurt snorts and rolls his eyes. "God. I feel like I'm intruding. I only came because she convinced me, and now she completely forgot I'm here." Kurt looks at them at the exact moment where Anthony is fixing Mercede's hair, and honestly, if you ask Blaine, he'll say they are really cute. "I'm happy for her, though."
Blaine leans closer so Kurt can listen to him, "do you want to get out of here?"
"Oh God, please. Yes."
Blaine laughs and stands up, walking to where he knows the backdoor is. He looks over his shoulder to see Kurt saying something to Mercede's ear, and the girl just waves him off. He catches Kurt rolling his eyes and motions for the boy to follow him.
He knows Anthony has a pool at his backyard, but their parents won't let him use the area to give parties and that's why he uses the house. But Blaine knows about it, so he opens the door silently, hoping no one will see him, and sneaks into the backyard. Kurt follows him suit, eyes widening when he sees the place.
"It's really nice, right?"
Kurt nods. "Yeah. Really nice. Like... Wow."
Blaine laughs and sits at the edge of the pool, crossing his legs and ditching his cup of punch. Kurt sits next to him and mimics his position, resting his elbow on his thigh and his chin on his palm. The music was still loud even outside, and Blaine found himself humming to the song as he looked to nowhere in particular.
"Mercedes is so screwed."
"I thought you said you were happy for her." Blaine giggles, low and breathy.
"I am. But she didn't tell me she liked Anthony and then she made me come here and she knows how much I hate those parties–"
"You hate parties?"
Kurt shrugs. "It's hard to like them when half the people there hate you for no reason."
Blaine ignores the strange tightening in his chest. "It shouldn't stop you from having fun."
"I can't even remember the last time I went out and actually had fun."
"No, seriously. You don't even dance when you go to parties? You should dance."
Rolling his eyes, Kurt looks at him. "I should. But I wasn't going to dance alone and Mercedes was too busy flirting with Anthony, so. Not really an option."
Again, Blaine has no idea if it's the alcohol or his own insanity. Probably both, but he isn't sure. He stands up anyway and offers his hand to Kurt, already moving his head to the beat of the song and smiling down at him.
"Come on. Dance."
"What are you doing?!" Kurt laughs, and Blaine will be an idiot anytime if it means Kurt will be looking like that.
"Trying to make you dance. Come ooon!"
Kurt shakes his head and takes Blaine's hand reluctantly, standing up and smiling as he does. But the universe was probably trying to tell them something, because as soon as Kurt is on his feet, the song changes to a slow one.
Kurt's mouth opens and closes, like he's trying to say something, but nothing comes out except for a small 'oh'. Blaine is one hundred per cent sure he's gone completely nuts now, because he is reaching out his hand, palm up, eyes looking up at the boy in front of him.
"Dance with me?"
His heart is beating so fast that he wonders if Kurt can hear it.
Kurt doesn't answer. Instead, he takes Blaine's hand again and lets himself be pulled closer. Blaine is pretty sure his heart has never beaten so fast, and instead of being terrified, he feels like he's exactly where he's supposed to be, for once.
Kurt seems to be insecure about what to do with his hands, so Blaine takes both of them and places it on his waist. The other boy hesitates, and Blaine can feel his fingers shaking. So he pulls him towards his body, his arms embracing him.
For a second he thinks about what could happen if someone saw them. But right now? He couldn't care less.
Blaine wasn't thinking when he talked to Kurt that first day. He wasn't thinking when he walked towards him tonight. He definitely wasn't thinking when he asked Kurt to dance with him, and he isn't thinking when he hooks his chin over Kurt's shoulder, tightening his grip on the boy's back.
He knows he'll blame it on the spiked punch later, but he also knows he is anything but drunk in the moment.
"I still didn't return your clothes," Kurt is whispering, so small and gentle that Blaine wonders if he imagined it. "And I really wanted to thank you again."
"You don't need to thank me."
"I do, though. I was feeling like shit and you made it better. So, thank you."
Blaine smiles and holds him so tight that he can feel Kurt's heartbeat against his own chest, making chills and goosebumps run all over his body.
"Anytime." He whispers back, and when he feels Kurt's arms tightening around him just a little bit, he is sure he never felt happier in his entire life.
