Quinn narrowed her eyes as she watched Kurt and Blaine kiss and walk back inside. She knew that Kurt had been lying about breaking up with him! There was no denying that they were in love, she could see that just from the way they looked at each other. That didn't mean that she had to like it though. Why was Kurt with him, when he could be with someone so much better, so much more popular? She only wanted the best for him - and her. Kurt was right. She was scared that if he went down, she'd be dragged down too. Kurt was her best friend, but only by default. Truth be told, she found him annoying and eccentric, and she only started this bet so that he would spend more time away from her. Plus, humiliating Anderson was always fun. She stayed until the door to the Hummel-Hudson door had been closed behind them and stormed off towards her house. She had said that Anderson would get hurt if they didn't break up, and she meant it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blaine and Kurt giggled as they kissed softly on their bed, completely and utterly in love.
"I want to do something special for you" Blaine said suddenly, sitting up straight.
Kurt whined chased his lips, frowning when Blaine pulled away. "You're already doing something special for me just by being with me" he smiled, trying to pull him back into his arms.
"No, no, come on, I'm being serious, you're my boyfriend, I love you, and I want to make you feel special and loved"
"I do feel special and loved...am I making you think that I don't?" Kurt frowned, pulling Blaine back down and cuddling up to him.
"No, of course you're not, I just really, really love you" Blaine smiled, resting his head on top of Kurt's.
"Okay" Kurt whispered, pressing a kiss to Blaine's shoulder. "Do you feel special and loved?"
"I feel like the most special and loved guy in the world when I'm with you, Kurt" Blaine said, wrapping his arms tightly around Kurt.
"I'm glad" Kurt replied.
Just as he was starting to get comfy, Blaine jumped up and grabbed his jacket.
"Hey, where are you going?" Kurt whined, reaching out for Blaine.
"Surprise" Blaine winked, kissing Kurt goodbye.
Blaine ran out of the room, and Kurt flopped back on the bed, faintly hearing the front door close and Blaine's car driving away. What he didn't hear was the car screech shut a few minutes later and a scream.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blaine pulled out of the driveway and turned the corner, grinning insanely to himself, thinking about how much Kurt was going to love his surprise. Suddenly, he saw someone jump out in front of the car. He slammed on the breaks and was yanked out of the car less than 2 seconds later. Shaking, he was shoved to the ground, and a fist made contact with his chin. Blaine screamed out in pain as the punches kept coming, and felt heavy boots kicking him in the ribs. Coughing and choking on his own blood, he weakly opened his eyes. He saw a group of jocks and Quinn standing over him.
"I warned him" she hissed before stamping on his nose.
Blaine let out a scream of agony as he felt and heard his nose break with a sickening crack. The jocks and Quinn laughed as they walked away, leaving Blaine lying on the ground
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurt glanced at the clock for the fifth time in 10 minutes. Blaine had been gone for 9 hours, and he was worried sick. Every time he called his phone, it rang and rang before eventually going to voicemail.
"He'll be okay kiddo" Burt comforted, although he was worried too.
Kurt could do nothing other than let out a chocked sob and bury his face in his father's shoulder. Suddenly, Kurt's phone rang, making him jolt away from Burt and answer the call without checking the caller ID.
"Blaine?!" Kurt sobbed.
"Mr Hummel?" an unfamiliar voice came. Kurt's blood ran cold.
"Y-Yes"
"I'm Officer Hastings of Lima Police. You're listed under the emergency contact for a Mr Blaine Anderson, and we just need to -"
"Oh god, he's dead" Kurt cried, collapsing, sobs racking through his body.
"No" Officer Hastings said. "But he has been very seriously hurt. He's at Lima Memorial Hospital, and we need you to go down there to try and help Mr Anderson answer some questions and answer some of your own. Now, he's been very seriously hurt, so I'm afraid that seeing him will be a shock"
"I'm on my way" Kurt whispered, hanging up the phone. "Dad, I'm going to the hospital, Blaine's there and he's hurt"
Burt froze. "I'm coming with you" he said, standing up.
"No, dad, don't. I want to go by myself, I want to see him alone. I'll call you when I have news, okay?"
"Okay" Burt nodded, letting his son walk out of the house.
Kurt drove as fast as he could to the hospital, barely able to see through his tears. He ran into the reception, where he ran into Officer Hastings - literally.
"Mr Hummel?"
"Please, call me Kurt" Kurt mumbled, looking at the police officer. "Take me to him, please, I need to see him"
"He's in surgery right now" Officer Hastings said gently, resting his hand on Kurt's shoulder as he began to cry harder. "He's suffered some serious injuries and has internal bleeding, which they're trying to fix"
"What are his injuries?" Kurt whispered, knowing that it would kill him to know, but he had to.
"Broken nose, 3 broken ribs, a punctured lung, broken jaw, a gash on the back of his head and internal bleeding"
Kurt gagged and ran to the nearest bathroom, throwing up as soon as he was in a stall. He collapsed against the toilet and cried harder than he ever had in his life. He couldn't remember feeling this broken and upset since his mom had died. He felt a tug at his heart, and more tears sprang to his eyes. He walked back outside and found Officer Hastings waiting for him.
"Kurt, I know that you're very upset right now, but I need to ask you some questions, and I'm sure that you'd rather get this over and done with. Once we're done, Mr Anderson should be out of surgery not long after"
Kurt nodded and sat down on the cold, hard waiting room chairs, feeling numb.
"What time did you last see Mr Anderson and where were you both"
"Please call him Blaine...it feels less official" Kurt whispered.
Officer Hastings nodded and repeated the question.
"Around 2pm I think, and we were out our house in our room"
"Can you describe the events that lead up to him leaving the house?"
"We were in our room, kissing and cuddling, you know, normal couple-y stuff. We'd just had a Glee night - we're both in Glee club, and so is my step brother - and they had left a few hours before. We talked for a bit, and then we left" Kurt said, reliving the scene in his head.
"What did you talk about?" Officer Hastings asked.
"Why do you need to know that?" Kurt replied, furrowing his brow. "It was a conversation between two boyfriends"
"We need to know every detail"
Kurt sighed and nodded. "He said that he wanted to do something special for me. I told him that he already was just by being with me, but he said that he was being serious, that he wanted to make me feel special and loved. I told him that I did and asked if I was making him think that I don't. He said that I wasn't and said that he just really, really loved me. I asked him if he felt special and loved, and he said ‘I feel like the most special and loved guy in the world when I'm with you, Kurt.' I told him that I was glad and cuddled up to him. After a couple of minutes, he suddenly got up and grabbed his jacket. When I asked where he was going, he just winked, said ‘surprise', kissed me goodbye and left. He was gone for 9 hours, and whenever I called him, it would ring and then go to voicemail. Then, you called and now I'm here"
Officer Hastings scribbled what Kurt had said down and nodded. "Now, this question is going to be difficult, but is there anyone that wanted to hurt Blaine, anyone who had anything specific against him?"
Kurt filled with dread as he thought of three people. "Yes" he whispered.
"Who?" Officer Hastings urged. "We need to know, Kurt"
"His mother, his father and Quinn Fabray"
"His mother and father?" Officer Hastings asked, concerned. "Why would they want to hurt him?"
"They resent him for being gay. They tell him that it's a phase, they call him gay slurs. I've only met them once, but I remember it clearly. We were at Blaine's; it was our one month anniversary and his parents were away on business that weekend, so he invited me over to stay from Friday to Sunday. We were saying goodbye, when his parents walked into the house and caught us. They screamed at me to get out, so I did. Just as I reached my car, I heard a scream, so I ran back inside and saw Blaine's father, Matthew Anderson I think his name is, calling Blaine and I gay slurs and stuff and saying how he wanted Blaine to date a girl and slapped him. Blaine talked back, defended us both and saying that he didn't want to date a girl because he's gay, and out and proud, and that I'm his boyfriend and that he loves me" Kurt choked out the last bit, fresh tears pouring down his cheeks. "His parents kicked him out and he came to live with me"
"You realise that what you've told me is very serious, Kurt" Officer Hasting said.
"I know, but it's all true. His mother's name is Alicia Anderson if you need her name too" Kurt replied.
Hastings nodded and wrote down the name. "I'll get them into the station as soon as we're done. Now, what about Quinn Fabray? Why would she want to hurt him?"
"Because he's dating me. I'm a cheerleader and I'm popular. Quinn is - was - my best friend, and she couldn't stand the fact that I was dating Blaine, as he's at the bottom of the high school food chain. He's dorky, in Glee club and dresses differently to other people. To put it simply, I'm popular and he's really not. Us dating started off as a bet between Quinn and I. She bet me that I couldn't get Blaine to date me and sleep with me. I took the bet, and to be honest, I'm glad I did, because I found the love of my life. Blaine and I fell in love, but I didn't tell Quinn, we didn't tell anyone except for my step brother, my parents, and Rachel, Blaine's best friend. Quinn knew that I'd won the bet, and was trying to give me the money, when I refused, trying to tell her that I really loved Blaine and didn't want her money. Blaine came in at the wrong time, misunderstood and we briefly broke up, but all was soon explained and we were back together. Not only were we back together, but we went public with our relationship. That night after we'd gone public, Quinn told me that if I didn't break up with Blaine, then he would get hurt. I told Blaine what she'd said, and he told me that we wouldn't break up, but we would just go back to hiding again. The next Saturday, we told the Glee club - that's why we were having a Glee night - the whole story, and we thought things were going to be okay. That Saturday was yesterday, so some time between now and then, she must have found out and got Blaine when he was driving to get my surprise"
Officer Hastings nodded and wrote everything down. "Okay, thank you Kurt, that's all. I'm going to go and get Blaine's parents to the station. You stay here, Blaine will be out of surgery soon and he's going to need you here when he wakes up"
Kurt simply nodded, and watched Hastings leave. 15 minutes later, a doctor in a white lab coat entered the waiting room. "Mr Hummel?"
Kurt stood up and rushed over to him.
"He's out of surgery and should wake up in an hour or two" the doctor said. "You can go into his room and wait with him if you like. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you when he does. His room is the 3rd one on the 7th floor"
Kurt thanked him and ran to Blaine's room. As soon he was there, he broke down at the sight of him. He had a bandage wrapped around his head, his curly hair peeking out of the top, tape across his nose and he was covered in tubes and wires. He was attached to a drip and a heart monitor that was beeping along to Blaine's heartbeat. Kurt pulled a chair right up next to the bed and grabbed Blaine's hand, sobbing into it. Softly, he began singing I'll Stand By You by The Pretenders, crying throughout the whole song. He carried on singing as it was calming him down a little, not taking his eyes off of Blaine. Just as he was in the middle of his 13th song, Blaine mumbled something.
"What was that baby?" Kurt asked, his heart lifting.
"I said that you have a beautiful voice" Blaine said weakly, squeezing the hand that was holding his.
Kurt blushed and ducked his head.
"I could listen to you forever" Blaine continued.
"I want you to" Kurt whispered, tears prickling his eyes again.
"Hey, come on no tears. Now come over here and give your boyfriend a much needed kiss"
Kurt let out a watery laugh and stood up, leaning over Blaine and pressing their lips together gently.
"Mm, thank you" Blaine hummed, giving Kurt a final kiss. Kurt went to go and sit back in the chair but Blaine grabbed his arm. "Lie with me?"
"B, I don't know, you've got broken ribs, a punctured lung, internal bleeding -"
"I know, but...I kinda just really need you to hold me" Blaine whispered, looking up at Kurt. "Please"
Kurt carefully lay down on the bed and let Blaine cuddle up to him, carefully wrapping his arms around him.
"How're you feeling baby?" Kurt asked, running a hand through the curls poking out of the top of the bandage around Blaine's head.
"Tired. Really tired. And I'm in a lot of pain, and I'm sad"
"Sad?"
"They broke my glasses so now I can't be your Spencer Reid" Blaine pouted.
Kurt chuckled and kissed Blaine's forehead. "You'll always be my Spencer Reid"
They stayed cuddled up together for another half an hour before Officer Hastings came back in and sat down in the chair that Kurt was in before.
"Hello Blaine, I'm Officer Hastings and I'm going to need to ask you a few questions" Hastings said gently, smiling softly at the two boys to show that he was a person that they could trust.
"Go ahead" Blaine yawned, not moving from his position.
"Can you remember who did this to you? If not, a visual description or anything?"
"Yeh, I do" Blaine said quietly. "It was some jocks from my school. I couldn't name them, but if you showed them to me, I would be able to point them out. They were all definitely on the football team though. The nose was Quinn Fabray"
Kurt clenched his teeth and closed his eyes. He was going to kill Quinn. "I am so sorry that she did this to you baby" Kurt whispered. "I'm so, so sorry"
"It's not your fault" Blaine whispered back, pressing a kiss to Kurt's chest as he couldn't reach any other part of his body without moving.
"Could you describe the attack and the events leading up to it?"
"I'd just left Kurt's house to go and sort out a surprise for him when somebody - I'm guessing one of the jocks - jumped out in front of my car. I slammed on the break and before I could do anything, I was being pulled out of the car and shoved to the ground. Then somebody punched my chin and I was being kicked and punched by people, and I was sort of choking on my own blood. After a bit, I managed to open my eyes and I saw a load of jocks and Quinn standing above me. Quinn said "I warned him" then stamped on my nose before they all walked away laughing. I was too weak to move and was lying there for hours before somebody found me and called an ambulance"
Kurt paled as Blaine retold the story. He felt sick to his stomach. How could anybody do something like that?
"I have one final question" Hastings said, looking Blaine straight in the eye. "Do your parents abuse you?"
Blaine closed his eyes and nodded. "My dad hits me sometimes and they both verbally abuse me. How did you know about that?" Blaine asked, panicking, his eyes snapping open.
"I told him" Kurt whispered. "He asked me if there was anyone who wanted to hurt you, so I said your mom, your dad and Quinn, and then it all came out, I'm so sorry baby"
"No. Don't ever be sorry, Kurt, I'm thankful. I feel...safer now"
Kurt kissed Blaine's forehead and rubbed his cheek with his hand. Blaine leant into the touch, closing his eyes again, this time in content.
"I'll leave you two alone. Blaine, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to arrest your parents, and you'll need to make an official statement. I know that I'll be able to have something done about your dad, but seeing as your mom never actually hit you I don't know what I'll be able to do there though. But, you can move out with your parent's permission, and as you were kicked out it is perfectly legal for you to stay with Kurt" Hastings said, standing up.
"Okay" Blaine nodded. "Thank you Officer Hastings"
He smiled at the two boys softly before walking out of the room, leaving them alone. Blaine cuddled closer to Kurt, burying his face in his chest.
"You okay baby?" Kurt asked, playing with Blaine's curls.
"Sleepy" he mumbled, nuzzling into Kurt.
"It's okay B, go to sleep. I'll be right here when you wake up"
"Promise?"
"Promise" Kurt repeated, kissing the top of his head softly. He listened as Blaine's breathing evened out and rested his head on top of his. He couldn't believe that Quinn would really go through with it, hurting Blaine this much, to the point where he had internal bleeding, a punctured lung and several broken bones. Just thinking about it made him livid. He would have called her already and screamed at her if his first priority wasn't Blaine and if he didn't want to do it face to face. Luckily for him, school was tomorrow, and Quinn was really going to get it.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, after kissing Blaine goodbye at the hospital and leaving with the promise that he would be back as soon as school was done, Kurt drove to school and stalked down the hallway angrily, not caring about the stares that he got because he wasn't wearing his Cheerios uniform. He spotted Quinn at her locker and stormed over to her.
"You bitch!" he spat, slamming her locker shut.
Quinn jumped and backed up against the cold, hard, metal lockers. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice slightly shaken. Yes she was the top bitch, but Kurt was fucking scary when he was angry.
"You know exactly what I mean" Kurt hissed. "Getting your little friends to beat my boyfriend half to death! You know that he's in the hospital right now, with a gash on the back of his head from where he hid the ground, a broken nose, broken ribs -"
"Okay so he has a few broken bones" Quinn sneered. "Big deal. He's not seriously injured, we didn't hurt him that bad"
"INTERNAL BLEEDING AND A PUNCTURED LUNG!" Kurt screamed, ignoring the crowd that had now gathered round him. "And even without those injuries, broken bones is still a major thing to do to someone Quinn! I can't believe that you actually did that. Do you even realise the full extent of what you've done?! He's in hospital, on a drip, a heart monitor, and covered in wires. He had surgery to fix the internal bleeding and the punctured lung. He's broken, completely broken, and as much as he tries to convince me that he's fine, I know that he's not. He's in pain, he's tired, he's upset, and I don't blame him! You've hurt the man that I love, and you are really going to regret that. Oh, and as for your little threat of throwing me off the Cheerios as well? Forget it. I quit!"
With that, Kurt punched the locker and stormed away, tears threatening to spill down his cheeks. He needed to get back to the hospital. He needed to see Blaine. Now.
~~~~~~~~
Blaine was lying in his hospital bed, bored out of his mind. The pain had subsided a little bit, but not enough for him to move properly without help. Just as he was about to call a nurse to ask if he could have anything to eat, the door to his room was thrown open, slamming against the wall before being shoved closed again. Kurt stalked into the room, slumping in the chair and rubbed his forehead with his thumb and forefinger.
"Kurt? What're you doing here? Baby, what's wrong?" Blaine asked, frowning.
"Quinn" Kurt muttered, burying his face in his hands and letting out a choked sob. "I confronted her at school and she didn't even seem to care, passing off a few broken bones as not that bad. Then I told her about the internal bleeding and the punctured lung and she still didn't care. At least I don't think that she did, I didn't really give her a chance to talk. I sort of just screamed at her then left. And I quit the Cheerios"
Blaine sat up quickly, wincing as a sharp pain shot through his side. "First of all, Quinn's a bitch, ignore her, she means nothing to me. She can think what she wants, when she looks back on her high school life, she'll think of all the mistakes she made and what a horrible person she was, whereas we'll look back and see how in love we are and how much we got through together. Secondly, you did what?!"
"I quit the Cheerios" Kurt repeated.
"Why?" Blaine asked quietly. He felt guilty because maybe Kurt quit the Cheerios because of him, because of how unpopular he is.
"Because I don't want to be on a cheer team with anyone who's going to do that to you - anyone who's going to say anything bad about you either"
"But Kurt, your popularity -"
"Screw my popularity" Kurt said, leaning forward and taking Blaine's hands in his. "I'd rather spend all my time with the man I love and surrounded by people who accept us and care about us than be popular. You mean so much more to me than some high school reputation"
Blaine swallowed, fighting back the tears. Sometimes Kurt was just so perfect. It was moments like these that he really appreciated him, appreciated having him in his life. Every day he was astounded that they were even together, let alone in love, and he just couldn't believe his luck that his senior year turned out this amazing.
"I am so in love with you" Blaine whispered, still blinking back tears.
"Don't cry, B" Kurt whispered back, standing up and sitting on the edge of the bed. Blaine pulled him closer, ignoring the stabbing pains shooting up and down his side.
"Baby, don't, you're in pain" Kurt soothed, rubbing his hands up and down Blaine's arms.
"I want to be close to you" Blaine pouted.
Kurt shuffled closer to him, wrapping his arms around him instinctively. "I really, really love you"
"I really, really love you too" Blaine giggled.
The mood was instantly lifted, and they spent the rest of the day talking, cuddling, kissing and just being a couple. The doctor came in to check up on Blaine every hour, and they were told that once he would be allowed home in a few days provided that they're happy with his progress. At the end of the day, the nurses made Kurt leave, saying that Blaine needed his rest. After they'd kissed goodbye, Kurt left, promising himself that he would come back every day until Blaine was better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Five days later, and Blaine was allowed home. They were both ecstatic, and Blaine was happy to be away from the hospital and its crappy food. He was still having problems walking by himself because of his surgery, so he was given a wheelchair to get around in, seeing as he insisted on going back to school immediately. During the time that he'd been away, Kurt had told the Glee club what had happened and been into school every day for a few minutes to get Blaine's homework for him. He loved how Blaine was still so focused on his studies, even after everything he'd been through. Kurt wheeled Blaine into the empty house - Burt and Carole had had to go away to Washington and Finn was at Rachel's - and helped him onto the couch.
"Happy to be home?" Kurt asked, sitting next to him.
"Definitely" Blaine grinned. "Baby, can you do me a favour?"
"Anything" Kurt smiled sweetly.
"Could you make me some food?" Blaine asked, biting his lip. "I just...I don't want to make you work for me or anything, it's just that the food in the hospital was really gross and I missed your cooking as - umph!"
He was cut off by a deliciously soft pair of lips pressed against his own. He closed his eyes and tilted his head, trying to deepen the kiss. Kurt pulled away, chuckling when Blaine followed his lips, his face vaguely resembling a confused puppy.
"Nuh-uh, not until you're better, mister" Kurt scolded jokingly. "Now, what do you want to eat"
Blaine blushed, ducking his head. "I don't mind, everything you make is amazing"
Kurt smiled at Blaine before going into the kitchen, which was just behind the lounge. "You know, I think that it's absolutely adorable that I still make you blush like a little girl"
"I do not blush like a little girl!" Blaine protested, his face flushing a deeper shade of red.
Kurt leaned over the counter that connects the kitchen and lounge and smirked. "You so do. And it's adorable"
Blaine said nothing, just smiled to himself. Ten minutes later, Kurt walked into the room carrying a plate of waffles with syrup poured all over them. Blaine gaped and leaned up as far as he could to kiss Kurt.
"They look delicious, thank you so much" he rushed as he wolfed down the waffles.
"Woah, woah, slow down there B" Kurt laughed as he sat next to Blaine, who slowed down slightly but was finished in a matter of minutes.
"Can we go upstairs? I've missed our bed" Blaine asked.
"How are you going to get up there?" Kurt frowned.
Blaine wrapped his arms around Kurt's neck and looked up at him with a hopeful glint in his eye. "Carry me?"
"Go on then" Kurt laughed, picking Blaine up and carrying him upstairs. He set him down carefully on the bed and lay down next to him, letting Blaine cuddle up to his side. "What do you want to do?" he asked, running a hand through Blaine's hair, which was now not only free of gel, but of the bandage too.
In reply, Blaine started kissing Kurt's neck and mouthing over his jaw line.
"Come on baby, no, you're not strong enough. You've just been hurt really bad B, and you're in pain, it'll make things worse" Kurt protested, terrified of putting Blaine through even more pain than he's already in.
"No, please baby, it'll make things better, all we've done is kiss every so often for almost a week now, please baby, please" Blaine begged, trying to shift into Kurt's lap.
"B, no, not until you're better. I'm not risking anything" Kurt said softly, keeping Blaine in his place beside him. "It's not that I don't want to, because I do" he rushed when he saw Blaine's upset face. "I just want you to get better first. You can't even walk sweetheart, let alone do...that"
Blaine nodded, looking down. Kurt was right. How were they supposed to do anything when he couldn't even walk.
"You're right, I'm sorry" Blaine sighed, cuddling up to Kurt again. "I've just really missed being with you these past few days...not just like that, but it's hard to be couple-y in a hospital"
"You don't need to apologise" Kurt replied, wrapping one arm around Blaine's waist and resting the other on his knee. "I know what you mean though. I've missed being with you as well. But, when we go back to school on Monday, we can be as couple-y as you want. Quinn won't go near you again, I'll make sure of it"
"Thank you" Blaine breathed. "You're way too perfect"
"I'm not. I'm just crazy in love" Kurt laughed.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, just enjoying each other's company, until Blaine groaned loudly in annoyance.
"What's wrong?" Kurt asked, his brow furrowed.
"I never got to get you your surprise"
Kurt smiled widely at Blaine and hooked a finger under his chin, tilting his head up. He pressed a sweet, lingering kiss to his lips, savouring the moment. "I love you"
"I love you too"
Quinn narrowed her eyes as she watched Kurt and Blaine kiss and walk back inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blaine and Kurt giggled as they kissed softly on their bed, completely and utterly in love.
"I want to do something special for you" Blaine said suddenly, sitting up straight.
Kurt whined chased his lips, frowning when Blaine pulled away. "You're already doing something special for me just by being with me" he smiled, trying to pull him back into his arms.
"No, no, come on, I'm being serious, you're my boyfriend, I love you, and I want to make you feel special and loved"
"I do feel special and loved...am I making you think that I don't?" Kurt frowned, pulling Blaine back down and cuddling up to him.
"No, of course you're not, I just really, really love you" Blaine smiled, resting his head on top of Kurt's.
"Okay" Kurt whispered, pressing a kiss to Blaine's shoulder. "Do you feel special and loved?"
"I feel like the most special and loved guy in the world when I'm with you, Kurt" Blaine said, wrapping his arms tightly around Kurt.
"I'm glad" Kurt replied.
Just as he was starting to get comfy, Blaine jumped up and grabbed his jacket.
"Hey, where are you going?" Kurt whined, reaching out for Blaine.
"Surprise" Blaine winked, kissing Kurt goodbye.
Blaine ran out of the room, and Kurt flopped back on the bed, faintly hearing the front door close and Blaine's car driving away. What he didn't hear was the car screech shut a few minutes later and a scream.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurt glanced at the clock for the fifth time in 10 minutes. Blaine had been gone for 9 hours, and he was worried sick. Every time he called his phone, it rang and rang before eventually going to voicemail.
"He'll be okay kiddo" Burt comforted, although he was worried too.
Kurt could do nothing other than let out a chocked sob and bury his face in his father's shoulder. Suddenly, Kurt's phone rang, making him jolt away from Burt and answer the call without checking the caller ID.
"Blaine?!" Kurt sobbed.
"Mr Hummel?" an unfamiliar voice came. Kurt's blood ran cold.
"Y-Yes"
"I'm Officer Hastings of Lima Police. You're listed under the emergency contact for a Mr Blaine Anderson, and we just need to -"
"Oh god, he's dead" Kurt cried, collapsing, sobs racking through his body.
"No" Officer Hastings said. "But he has been very seriously hurt. He's at Lima Memorial Hospital, and we need you to go down there to try and help Mr Anderson answer some questions and answer some of your own. Now, he's been very seriously hurt, so I'm afraid that seeing him will be a shock"
"I'm on my way" Kurt whispered, hanging up the phone. "Dad, I'm going to the hospital, Blaine's there and he's hurt"
Burt froze. "I'm coming with you" he said, standing up.
"No, dad, don't. I want to go by myself, I want to see him alone. I'll call you when I have news, okay?"
"Okay" Burt nodded, letting his son walk out of the house.
Kurt drove as fast as he could to the hospital, barely able to see through his tears. He ran into the reception, where he ran into Officer Hastings - literally.
"Mr Hummel?"
"Please, call me Kurt" Kurt mumbled, looking at the police officer. "Take me to him, please, I need to see him"
"He's in surgery right now" Officer Hastings said gently, resting his hand on Kurt's shoulder as he began to cry harder. "He's suffered some serious injuries and has internal bleeding, which they're trying to fix"
"What are his injuries?" Kurt whispered, knowing that it would kill him to know, but he had to.
"Broken nose, 3 broken ribs, a punctured lung, broken jaw, a gash on the back of his head and internal bleeding"
Kurt gagged and ran to the nearest bathroom, throwing up as soon as he was in a stall. He collapsed against the toilet and cried harder than he ever had in his life. He couldn't remember feeling this broken and upset since his mom had died. He felt a tug at his heart, and more tears sprang to his eyes. He walked back outside and found Officer Hastings waiting for him.
"Kurt, I know that you're very upset right now, but I need to ask you some questions, and I'm sure that you'd rather get this over and done with. Once we're done, Mr Anderson should be out of surgery not long after"
Kurt nodded and sat down on the cold, hard waiting room chairs, feeling numb.
"What time did you last see Mr Anderson and where were you both"
"Please call him Blaine...it feels less official" Kurt whispered.
Officer Hastings nodded and repeated the question.
"Around 2pm I think, and we were out our house in our room"
"Can you describe the events that lead up to him leaving the house?"
"We were in our room, kissing and cuddling, you know, normal couple-y stuff. We'd just had a Glee night - we're both in Glee club, and so is my step brother - and they had left a few hours before. We talked for a bit, and then we left" Kurt said, reliving the scene in his head.
"What did you talk about?" Officer Hastings asked.
"Why do you need to know that?" Kurt replied, furrowing his brow. "It was a conversation between two boyfriends"
"We need to know every detail"
Kurt sighed and nodded. "He said that he wanted to do something special for me. I told him that he already was just by being with me, but he said that he was being serious, that he wanted to make me feel special and loved. I told him that I did and asked if I was making him think that I don't. He said that I wasn't and said that he just really, really loved me. I asked him if he felt special and loved, and he said ‘I feel like the most special and loved guy in the world when I'm with you, Kurt.' I told him that I was glad and cuddled up to him. After a couple of minutes, he suddenly got up and grabbed his jacket. When I asked where he was going, he just winked, said ‘surprise', kissed me goodbye and left. He was gone for 9 hours, and whenever I called him, it would ring and then go to voicemail. Then, you called and now I'm here"
Officer Hastings scribbled what Kurt had said down and nodded. "Now, this question is going to be difficult, but is there anyone that wanted to hurt Blaine, anyone who had anything specific against him?"
Kurt filled with dread as he thought of three people. "Yes" he whispered.
"Who?" Officer Hastings urged. "We need to know, Kurt"
"His mother, his father and Quinn Fabray"
"His mother and father?" Officer Hastings asked, concerned. "Why would they want to hurt him?"
"They resent him for being gay. They tell him that it's a phase, they call him gay slurs. I've only met them once, but I remember it clearly. We were at Blaine's; it was our one month anniversary and his parents were away on business that weekend, so he invited me over to stay from Friday to Sunday. We were saying goodbye, when his parents walked into the house and caught us. They screamed at me to get out, so I did. Just as I reached my car, I heard a scream, so I ran back inside and saw Blaine's father, Matthew Anderson I think his name is, calling Blaine and I gay slurs and stuff and saying how he wanted Blaine to date a girl and slapped him. Blaine talked back, defended us both and saying that he didn't want to date a girl because he's gay, and out and proud, and that I'm his boyfriend and that he loves me" Kurt choked out the last bit, fresh tears pouring down his cheeks. "His parents kicked him out and he came to live with me"
"You realise that what you've told me is very serious, Kurt" Officer Hasting said.
"I know, but it's all true. His mother's name is Alicia Anderson if you need her name too" Kurt replied.
Hastings nodded and wrote down the name. "I'll get them into the station as soon as we're done. Now, what about Quinn Fabray? Why would she want to hurt him?"
"Because he's dating me. I'm a cheerleader and I'm popular. Quinn is - was - my best friend, and she couldn't stand the fact that I was dating Blaine, as he's at the bottom of the high school food chain. He's dorky, in Glee club and dresses differently to other people. To put it simply, I'm popular and he's really not. Us dating started off as a bet between Quinn and I. She bet me that I couldn't get Blaine to date me and sleep with me. I took the bet, and to be honest, I'm glad I did, because I found the love of my life. Blaine and I fell in love, but I didn't tell Quinn, we didn't tell anyone except for my step brother, my parents, and Rachel, Blaine's best friend. Quinn knew that I'd won the bet, and was trying to give me the money, when I refused, trying to tell her that I really loved Blaine and didn't want her money. Blaine came in at the wrong time, misunderstood and we briefly broke up, but all was soon explained and we were back together. Not only were we back together, but we went public with our relationship. That night after we'd gone public, Quinn told me that if I didn't break up with Blaine, then he would get hurt. I told Blaine what she'd said, and he told me that we wouldn't break up, but we would just go back to hiding again. The next Saturday, we told the Glee club - that's why we were having a Glee night - the whole story, and we thought things were going to be okay. That Saturday was yesterday, so some time between now and then, she must have found out and got Blaine when he was driving to get my surprise"
Officer Hastings nodded and wrote everything down. "Okay, thank you Kurt, that's all. I'm going to go and get Blaine's parents to the station. You stay here, Blaine will be out of surgery soon and he's going to need you here when he wakes up"
Kurt simply nodded, and watched Hastings leave. 15 minutes later, a doctor in a white lab coat entered the waiting room. "Mr Hummel?"
Kurt stood up and rushed over to him.
"He's out of surgery and should wake up in an hour or two" the doctor said. "You can go into his room and wait with him if you like. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you when he does. His room is the 3rd one on the 7th floor"
Kurt thanked him and ran to Blaine's room. As soon he was there, he broke down at the sight of him. He had a bandage wrapped around his head, his curly hair peeking out of the top, tape across his nose and he was covered in tubes and wires. He was attached to a drip and a heart monitor that was beeping along to Blaine's heartbeat. Kurt pulled a chair right up next to the bed and grabbed Blaine's hand, sobbing into it. Softly, he began singing I'll Stand By You by The Pretenders, crying throughout the whole song. He carried on singing as it was calming him down a little, not taking his eyes off of Blaine. Just as he was in the middle of his 13th song, Blaine mumbled something.
"What was that baby?" Kurt asked, his heart lifting.
"I said that you have a beautiful voice" Blaine said weakly, squeezing the hand that was holding his.
Kurt blushed and ducked his head.
"I could listen to you forever" Blaine continued.
"I want you to" Kurt whispered, tears prickling his eyes again.
"Hey, come on no tears. Now come over here and give your boyfriend a much needed kiss"
Kurt let out a watery laugh and stood up, leaning over Blaine and pressing their lips together gently.
"Mm, thank you" Blaine hummed, giving Kurt a final kiss. Kurt went to go and sit back in the chair but Blaine grabbed his arm. "Lie with me?"
"B, I don't know, you've got broken ribs, a punctured lung, internal bleeding -"
"I know, but...I kinda just really need you to hold me" Blaine whispered, looking up at Kurt. "Please"
Kurt carefully lay down on the bed and let Blaine cuddle up to him, carefully wrapping his arms around him.
"How're you feeling baby?" Kurt asked, running a hand through the curls poking out of the top of the bandage around Blaine's head.
"Tired. Really tired. And I'm in a lot of pain, and I'm sad"
"Sad?"
"They broke my glasses so now I can't be your Spencer Reid" Blaine pouted.
Kurt chuckled and kissed Blaine's forehead. "You'll always be my Spencer Reid"
They stayed cuddled up together for another half an hour before Officer Hastings came back in and sat down in the chair that Kurt was in before.
"Hello Blaine, I'm Officer Hastings and I'm going to need to ask you a few questions" Hastings said gently, smiling softly at the two boys to show that he was a person that they could trust.
"Go ahead" Blaine yawned, not moving from his position.
"Can you remember who did this to you? If not, a visual description or anything?"
"Yeh, I do" Blaine said quietly. "It was some jocks from my school. I couldn't name them, but if you showed them to me, I would be able to point them out. They were all definitely on the football team though. The nose was Quinn Fabray"
Kurt clenched his teeth and closed his eyes. He was going to kill Quinn. "I am so sorry that she did this to you baby" Kurt whispered. "I'm so, so sorry"
"It's not your fault" Blaine whispered back, pressing a kiss to Kurt's chest as he couldn't reach any other part of his body without moving.
"Could you describe the attack and the events leading up to it?"
"I'd just left Kurt's house to go and sort out a surprise for him when somebody - I'm guessing one of the jocks - jumped out in front of my car. I slammed on the break and before I could do anything, I was being pulled out of the car and shoved to the ground. Then somebody punched my chin and I was being kicked and punched by people, and I was sort of choking on my own blood. After a bit, I managed to open my eyes and I saw a load of jocks and Quinn standing above me. Quinn said "I warned him" then stamped on my nose before they all walked away laughing. I was too weak to move and was lying there for hours before somebody found me and called an ambulance"
Kurt paled as Blaine retold the story. He felt sick to his stomach. How could anybody do something like that?
"I have one final question" Hastings said, looking Blaine straight in the eye. "Do your parents abuse you?"
Blaine closed his eyes and nodded. "My dad hits me sometimes and they both verbally abuse me. How did you know about that?" Blaine asked, panicking, his eyes snapping open.
"I told him" Kurt whispered. "He asked me if there was anyone who wanted to hurt you, so I said your mom, your dad and Quinn, and then it all came out, I'm so sorry baby"
"No. Don't ever be sorry, Kurt, I'm thankful. I feel...safer now"
Kurt kissed Blaine's forehead and rubbed his cheek with his hand. Blaine leant into the touch, closing his eyes again, this time in content.
"I'll leave you two alone. Blaine, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to arrest your parents, and you'll need to make an official statement. I know that I'll be able to have something done about your dad, but seeing as your mom never actually hit you I don't know what I'll be able to do there though. But, you can move out with your parent's permission, and as you were kicked out it is perfectly legal for you to stay with Kurt" Hastings said, standing up.
"Okay" Blaine nodded. "Thank you Officer Hastings"
He smiled at the two boys softly before walking out of the room, leaving them alone. Blaine cuddled closer to Kurt, burying his face in his chest.
"You okay baby?" Kurt asked, playing with Blaine's curls.
"Sleepy" he mumbled, nuzzling into Kurt.
"It's okay B, go to sleep. I'll be right here when you wake up"
"Promise?"
"Promise" Kurt repeated, kissing the top of his head softly. He listened as Blaine's breathing evened out and rested his head on top of his. He couldn't believe that Quinn would really go through with it, hurting Blaine this much, to the point where he had internal bleeding, a punctured lung and several broken bones. Just thinking about it made him livid. He would have called her already and screamed at her if his first priority wasn't Blaine and if he didn't want to do it face to face. Luckily for him, school was tomorrow, and Quinn was really going to get it.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Now.
~~~~~~~~
Blaine was lying in his hospital bed, bored out of his mind. The pain had subsided a little bit, but not enough for him to move properly without help. Just as he was about to call a nurse to ask if he could have anything to eat, the door to his room was thrown open, slamming against the wall before being shoved closed again. Kurt stalked into the room, slumping in the chair and rubbed his forehead with his thumb and forefinger.
"Kurt? What're you doing here? Baby, what's wrong?" Blaine asked, frowning.
"Quinn" Kurt muttered, burying his face in his hands and letting out a choked sob. "I confronted her at school and she didn't even seem to care, passing off a few broken bones as not that bad. Then I told her about the internal bleeding and the punctured lung and she still didn't care. At least I don't think that she did, I didn't really give her a chance to talk. I sort of just screamed at her then left. And I quit the Cheerios"
Blaine sat up quickly, wincing as a sharp pain shot through his side. "First of all, Quinn's a bitch, ignore her, she means nothing to me. She can think what she wants, when she looks back on her high school life, she'll think of all the mistakes she made and what a horrible person she was, whereas we'll look back and see how in love we are and how much we got through together. Secondly, you did what?!"
"I quit the Cheerios" Kurt repeated.
"Why?" Blaine asked quietly. He felt guilty because maybe Kurt quit the Cheerios because of him, because of how unpopular he is.
"Because I don't want to be on a cheer team with anyone who's going to do that to you - anyone who's going to say anything bad about you either"
"But Kurt, your popularity -"
"Screw my popularity" Kurt said, leaning forward and taking Blaine's hands in his. "I'd rather spend all my time with the man I love and surrounded by people who accept us and care about us than be popular. You mean so much more to me than some high school reputation"
Blaine swallowed, fighting back the tears. Sometimes Kurt was just so perfect. It was moments like these that he really appreciated him, appreciated having him in his life. Every day he was astounded that they were even together, let alone in love, and he just couldn't believe his luck that his senior year turned out this amazing.
"I am so in love with you" Blaine whispered, still blinking back tears.
"Don't cry, B" Kurt whispered back, standing up and sitting on the edge of the bed. Blaine pulled him closer, ignoring the stabbing pains shooting up and down his side.
"Baby, don't, you're in pain" Kurt soothed, rubbing his hands up and down Blaine's arms.
"I want to be close to you" Blaine pouted.
Kurt shuffled closer to him, wrapping his arms around him instinctively. "I really, really love you"
"I really, really love you too" Blaine giggled.
The mood was instantly lifted, and they spent the rest of the day talking, cuddling, kissing and just being a couple. The doctor came in to check up on Blaine every hour, and they were told that once he would be allowed home in a few days provided that they're happy with his progress. At the end of the day, the nurses made Kurt leave, saying that Blaine needed his rest. After they'd kissed goodbye, Kurt left, promising himself that he would come back every day until Blaine was better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
