Chapter 5 is coming soon!
Dinner went off without a hitch, the meal delicious and the conversation seemingly effortless, and after coffee and dessert, the women became entranced in a discussion all their own. Much to Blaines surprise, Kurt began to rise from the table, causing Rachel to stop mid-sentence.
"Would anyone mind if I stepped outside to smoke?"
Kitty smiled. "Not at all. You can step out onto the back patio if youd like. Its right through that doorway there, through the kitchen."
Kurt? Smoke? Certainly not. Blaine had only known him for a short while, but something told him deep inside that everything wasnt as it seemed.
Kurt thanked her and saw himself out. As the girls started to prattle on, Kitty noticed her husband pensively staring down at the table, lightly tapping his fingers against the linen fabric.
"Blaine, sweetheart, why dont you go see if Kurt would like a little company?" she offered softly. "Im sure were boring you with all of our parlor talk."
He glanced at Rachel as if seeking approval.
"I dont think hed mind the company," remarked Rachel with a smile.
Blaine moved his napkin to the table and stood, pushing in his chair once he did. "If youll excuse me, ladies…"
He made quick work of getting outside, but not alarmingly so. Once there, he noticed Kurt sitting in one of the patio chairs furthest away from the back door, gazing out at the small bean shaped pool. Blaine took note of his surrounds and neither an ash nor wisp of smoke nor butt of a cigarette were to be found.
"Grow tired of the women?" Kurt asked, peering around the large back of his chair. Blaine moved closer, his hands in his pockets.
"One can only hear so much gossip and beauty parlor nonsense in one day."
"Would you like to join me?"
"May I?"
"Its your patio."
"Very well." Blaine unbuttoned his blazer and sat on the empty chair beside Kurt. Although he had never smoked a cigarette in his life, he was prepared to try it if it meant getting to hear this intriguing mans voice a second time.
"Can I bum a smoke?"
Kurt turned to stare at him head on. "I dont smoke."
"But you said--"
"I know what I said, but I dont smoke."
Blaine was puzzled. "You dont?"
"No," murmured Kurt, sitting upright. "Its just something Rachel and I say when one of us needs some fresh air."
Blaine furrowed his brow. "I dont understand."
Kurt crossed his arms. "Being in there, inside with---it was too much."
Blaine opened his mouth to speak, but Kurt beat him to it.
"I saw you looking at me, you know."
Blaine gulped. He could feel his pulse start to race. Suddenly everything was too warm. Too close. Too soon. Too real.
"I---Im sure I dont know what youre talking abou--"
"I was looking at you too."
This man, the man he had only met a few hours ago, was somehow reading him like a book and it terrified him.
"Why would you be looking at me?"
"You want to know?" quizzed Kurt.
Although his nerves were starting to get to him, Blaine gave the man a quick nod.
Kurt leaned in closer, his body being a nearly uncomfortable distance from Blaines own; eyes glittering in the moonlight.
Softly, he whispered, "I know what you are."
Blaine huffed out a stream of air as he began to panic and Kurt instantly took note, reaching out and placing his hand with on Blaines arm.
"Shhhh…" uttered Kurt in attempts to calm him. "Its alright." His thumb caressed Blaines forearm through the thick material of his blazer.
"The day we moved in, you were mowing the front lawn and I couldnt help myself. I had to watch you. The way your shirt clung to your body, how the sweat on your forehead glistened in the sun…the way your ass looked as you pushed the mower from one side of the yard to the other. I couldnt tear myself away."
By this time, Blaines breathing had leveled out and he listened to the beautiful man before him speak, hanging on to every word.
"It was only when Rachel told me I was gawking that I was able to get any work done."
Blaines eyebrows shot up without fail. "Rac---your wife?"
Kurt simpered. "To some. Legally, no. Legally, shes Rachel Berry--my best friend."
"Common law?"
Kurt brought his hand down to Blaines, his eyes following, and traced his fingers over the band of gold upon his finger.
"My marriage is a ruse, Blaine…" His eyes wandered from the ring up to Blaines face and inquired softly, "Is yours?"
As he opened his mouth to speak, Kurt closed the distance between them with a kiss. Kissing a man should have felt unnatural, but to Blaine, it was the most wonderful feeling in the world. He felt alive, his lips tingling as he tried to kiss Kurt back firmly. Coming to an end just as quickly as it began, Blaine deemed the kiss as being over far too soon. His own mouth wanted to chase after Kurts and then he came to his senses.
He just kissed a man in the middle of his backyard. Swiftly, he looked around, suddenly thankful that Kitty suggested putting in a privacy fence especially with old Mrs. Johnson living next door.
Kurts finger came to rest on Blaines lips. "We should go inside. I think weve smoked enough for today."
