The secretary from the office interrupted the class. Everyone looked up surprised because usually that meant very good news or very bad news, and all the people in that class knew there was nothing yet that could be considered good news as exams were only a couple of months away and everyone had been studying for them.
So it could only be one thing
“Kurt Hummel, could you step outside please?” The lady's wondering eyes always teased the students by glancing around the room as though a lucky draw was about to happen before picking the winner. Kurt was the one picked out of the hat as Trent patted his back in silent encouragement and he found David's eye next to the doorway of where the secretary was standing nearby and he looked worried.
Kurt gathered up his things and said thank you to his Algebra teacher who excused him.
He walked with his head up and found the secretary standing outside the door waiting patiently but not with a sympathetic look. Sometimes her expressions gave the students a heads up for what was coming, but Kurt couldn't read her expression this time.
“Kurt, the headmaster has contacted me to let you know that your father has awoken from hospital. He hadn't wanted me to disturb you while you were doing your test, but the boy on the phone insisted you would want to know straight away,”
In other words she meant if you failed, you had a chance to resubmit.
Kurt only just focused on one thing “My father's awake?”
“Yes we got a call from a boy named Finn…”
Kurt grabbed her hands despite her own shock she smiled as he particularly screamed “You're serious? THANK YOU,”
“Don't thank me….Finn said your step mum has given permission to leave early,”
Kurt was trying hard not to bolt then and there, but he gave the woman one look of pure happiness and she gestured to the door “Well go on then,”
He hugged her and ran for it.
“No running in the hallways Mr Hummel! Tell your father we wish him good health!”
“I WILL,” He called back but not slowing down as he was outside before she could tell him again.
Kurt's smile evaporated when he knocked frantically on Blaine's door to tell the boy the good news when an older man stood there glaring at him. An older man with Blaine's same face and hair, but with a darker and more solid expression.
“Oh…sorry sir is um Blaine home?” Kurt tried not to quiver in his voice as he smiled politely “I'm a friend from school,”
“Go home, my son does not need any more distractions” The man said his arms over his chest as he looked over Kurt and frowned at his choice of clothing “I already told the previous flock of Warblers to go home,”
Was this guy for real?
“I don't understand” Kurt said truthfully as he forced himself to look Mr Anderson in the eyes.
“He's failing in his school results because of you lot. It's bad enough that he sings and practices at home let alone practices at school as well. I let Blaine have a year of this dancing and prancing and I won't have it anymore, Pam told me he was an excellent student, and deserves a break. I gave him a warning and well I tell you what a break does for him! He has poor academic results not enough discipline,”
Kurt couldn't understand what Mr Anderson was saying. Blaine did do well. Kurt remembered the way Blaine came back to Dalton for that one test they had while he was sick. Blaine insisted he had to take the test even though his teachers encouraged him to stay home and take it another time. He forced himself not to cough for 1 hour and Kurt could hear his heavy breathing from behind his desk when they'd been doing the test. Kurt thought Blaine was more driven than anyone he knew.
The worst though was the look on Blaine's face when he gave him the results. Kurt had been so proud and excited for the other boy but when he had given it to Blaine last week after a visit from the hospital Blaine had looked devastated as though he failed.
“Sir Blaine has been sick,” Kurt pleaded trying to get some sense out of him “In all due respects Mr Anderson Blaine should be credited for the amount of work he managed to put in when he should have been taking care of his health,”
“I said go home, you'll see Blaine tomorrow, I need to talk with my son,”
“Please sir; I just want 5 minutes with Blaine,” Kurt needed to see the other boy. He needed to feel those comforting hands around his back that gave him strength, he needed to tell him his dad was awake and how grateful he was for Blaine being there.
“I said leave my property at once!”
Kurt looked lost and then he heard Blaine's voice which sounded a little choked up “Kurt?”
Mr Anderson looked furious as he was pushed aside so Blaine could get out.
“Are you okay?” Blaine said searching his face and noticing the disappointment across his elegant features and the sadness in Kurt's eyes.
“Tell him to go back to Dalton Blaine, or go with him, but if I see another B- again on your test Blaine, you won't be continuing this stupid idea of glee club,”
With that Mr Anderson slammed the door on them and Blaine winced as he grabbed Kurt's arm more harshly than he intended to move him along back to his car “You shouldn't have come,”
“I didn't realise my visit would be so unwelcomed or I wouldn't have,” Kurt snapped as Blaine closed his eyes as though in pain. Kurt's heart weakened at the sight. “I told you not to come when I got sick, but you came anyway,” He looked back to see his dad staring at them in the window and giving him a look that said ‘we need to talk'
His eyes went back to Kurt. “Just do me a favour in go back to Dalton. Tell the others I'll be there tomorrow,”
“Blaine…”
“Goodbye Kurt, I'll see you at Dalton” Blaine opened the drivers seat for Kurt who huffed as he placed his hands on the stirring wheel.
He was about to tell Blaine about his father then but Blaine had already started walking back to his house without looking back at Kurt.
Kurt has no idea what the hell he had done wrong, but he started the car despite his confusion and went back to his parents house.
KurtHummel > WarblerWes Guys my dad just woke up from Hospital, Im not coming into school tomorrow so I can help him settle back at home, but Blaine will be back.
WarblerWes >KurtHummel thats great news Kurt! Ill let the headmaster know too if you like
KurtHummel > WarblerWes No need to, My step mum already called when I left but thank you
