Part 3
A man came out wearing exactly the same clothes as the man in the picture Kurt currently had in his pocket. He gaped at him, and could feel Blaine watching him in concern. "You okay?" Blaine asked nudging Kurt who shook.
The man greeted his new customers "How can I help you?" He looked at both Blaine and Kurt, but his eyes lingered on Kurt's eyes for a moment. "Do I know you?" he asked stepping closer. Kurt choked "Dad,"
Blaine's eyes widened as he looked to the man in front of him who stepped back then looking like he'd been hit by a truck. "Woah, kid I don't….that's…not possible," but Kurt wasn't going to give up. He had been imagining this moment his entire life. He couldn't believe he found the man he thought of every day in wonder.
"Did you know Elizabeth?"
Burt's eyes looked sad then. "You know her?"
Kurt nodded. "Knew," Kurt corrected and on Burt's confused expression, remembering that Burt had loved his mum he added "I'm really sorry but she died when I was 6. I'm her son," The man's face fell and he suddenly his eyes started to roll back in it's head and he began to sway.
"Sir are you ok- Sir!" Blaine gasped as the fainted. Both boys rushed to his side, not entirely sure what to do as they called out for help.
Blaine hurriedly helped Kurt get the man into a more appropriate sitting. "Oh my god, I should have made him sit down," Kurt said then and there was a voice behind them. "What the hell dudes! What did you do to Burt?" Finn had come running upon the shouting.
"We didn't do anything," Blaine snapped and added on Kurt's defence "Kurt was just talking, he fainted,"
"We should get him lying down" The boy suggested who was about their age with brown hair. He was about 6'3 way taller than Blaine, with light brown eyes and a palish but not as pale as Kurt's complexion.
"Inside?" Kurt asked as the boy who then introduced himself as Finn nodded. "Yeah, this is a family run business, he has a house next to the Garage, but there's a back door that leads to my bedroom,"
"My name's Blaine, and this is Kurt by the way, were really sorry about all this,"
Finn nodded. "Kurt can you help me carry him? Blaine can you tell one of the other guys what's happening and meet us inside? Noah – my colleague should be near the back over there,"
"Okay," He agreed but then looked to Kurt "Are you okay with lifting him?" Kurt nodded and shooed him to his duty "I'll be fine with Finn's help, um Blaine can you also ask Noah if he can look at the car for us?" Blaine nodded and squeezed his hand "I'll be back soon," at that Finn and Kurt lifted Burt on 3. Kurt grabbing his legs and Finn grabbing him under the shoulders.
The man was heavy.
"So what exactly did you say to make him faint? I don't think Burt's ever fainted before," Finn commented as they both walked following each other's lead to the door near the house.
"I don't think I should be discussing this in front of a stranger," Kurt said not to sound rude but because Burt had a right to decide who or who shouldn't know about this.
"I'm not a stranger…Burt married my mother, I live with him now,"
Kurt stared at Finn in shock then when Finn called out to the door "Thank god the kitchen's near the backdoor. Mum! Mum can you help open the backdoor!?"
"Whatever happened to the word please," A woman called back as they heard her put something on a stove and come towards the back door.
A kind looking lady came over to them and gasped through the screendoor at her husband. "Oh my god Burt – what happened?!" She demanded as she immediately opened the door for them and directed them to Finn's messy bed at which she quickly removed some shirts that had been carelessly thrown on the sheets.
"Burt fainted," Finn explained how it was Kurt's fault and what he'd seen.
"I'm sorry mam, I hadn't meant for this to happen,"
"Call me Carole sweetie, and I'm sure you didn't mean to, come in, we'll get you a drink, Finn can you get Burt a damp cloth for his forehead and some water while I assist Kurt?"
"His friend Blaine is with us too mum, he's gone to tell Noah what happened,"
"Good, Burt would have done the same thing, poor dear,"
"Now Kurt what would you like to drink, water, lemonade, apple juice, milk? Or would you prefer tea or coffee?"
"Just water is fine thank you Carole,"
Kurt watched as Blaine walked towards them having heard the backdoor open.
Blaine went over to Kurt and put a hand on his shoulder "Noah is looking at the car right now, everything okay? You okay?"
"I'm fine Blaine thank you," Kurt smiled at him. "And Burt's lying down now,"
"Are you his boyfriend Blaine?" Carole asked sweetly handing them both a glass of water. "Thank you mam and no… were just friends," Blaine was blushing this time and Kurt was admiring this new look on him with a smile on his face. Carole watched this interaction and grinned to herself. Carole then walked to the fridge and opened the door. She knew Finn was looking after Burt now so she wasn't too worried. "So he's your dad? How did you know though?"
"My mother once described him to me," Kurt said sadly and then Carole turned to face them when she was preparing the drinks. "Pardon me Kurt, but correct me if I'm wrong, did you just say Burt's your father?"
Kurt hesitated and Blaine gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze. "My mother told me Burt had been the most kindest man she ever knew, and I always wondered why she left her," Kurt explained to Carole and also wanted Blaine to know. Carole smiled at the description "Sounds like my man, your mother…she um…she know you here Kurt? I heard about the divorce but I never would have guessed she had a son,"
"I don't think Burt knew either, and no…my mother died when I was young," Kurt's heart still ached whenever he said that. Carole looked at him shocked "Oh honey, I'm so sorry," Kurt shrugged at her sadly. "Nothing anyone can do about it,"
"Is that why you came to find Burt?"
"Well actually I came here by acc-" But he stopped midsentence when they heard Burt groaning. "I had the weirdest dream…" Burt was explaining to Finn who was helping him sit up into the pillow as he groaned insisting that he didn't need to rest when Finn requested he do just do "There was a strange boy he was about your age and he claimed to be my- " Burt's eyes found Kurt's who had just entered the room upon hearing him talking in the kitchen and was standing with Carole and Blaine near the entrance while Finn was next to Burt who was semi-half laying on the bed and staring like a deer who'd been caught in headlights.
"Oh god," Burt looked sick. Finn panicked, and Blaine grabbed Kurt's hand and squeezed it for courage. "It wasn't a dream, was it?" Finn shook his head in answer and glanced at Kurt with worry for Burt's health.
"Dad," Kurt said and Burt shook his head "You can't be my son,"
"Dad please, I know you're in shock, I wasn't planning on finding you like this but… if you let me explain dad," Kurt couldn't help but call him dad. He'd been calling that photo dad his whole life, even if it had just seemed like a dream. So when Burt yelled "STOP CALLING ME THAT," It really hurt. He was about to protest but Burt said "I'm NOT your DAD," Kurt stopped talking immediately feeling the tears well up in his eyes as he looked around him. It was a lost cause. The only one that believed him was Blaine who was currently looking at him with worry, and Blaine only believed what Kurt had told him. "I- I'm sorry I disturbed you all, really I'm not here to cause trouble, we'll go," He said then looking to Blaine and lowering his eyes so as not to look at the faces of strangers he was surrounded by "Come on Blaine, we can get your car fixed somewhere else," He muttered quietly and began hurrying out of the house on his way handing Carole his water "Thank you mam for your hospitality, I'm sorry,"
"Kurt honey…" Carole began but Kurt was already gone. Blaine had let go of his hand by then and was still standing there just to have his say. He stepped closer to Kurt's dad and gave him a stern look "Kurt is the most moral, selfless man I've ever met…" Burt was listening with a look he couldn't read. "He really didn't come here on purpose to irritate you or whatever you're thinking right now, were actually on our way to see his friend he lost contact with and my car broke down outside your shop, seeing you was just a shock for him as well. Did you know he sleeps with your photo under his pillow? He thinks I don't know, but I do. He really could use a dad figure in his life. I'm sorry, I have to go now; he probably wants to get going so we can see her,"
He also thanked Carole and rushed out with Finn trailing behind. "Wait!"
Blaine stopped walking just as he found Kurt inspecting the garage workshop outside the house to see if Blaine's car was around.
"Your car has already been fixed, Burt said you could have it done for free, he didn't mean to upset Kurt either," Finn nodded to Kurt who gave him a sad smile in return "Thanks Finn, but were fine with paying it," Blaine added. Finn shook his head "No, it's fine really, Burt insisted," Finn added and gave them a weak smile before saying goodbye and heading back to his work.
Blaine took Kurt's hand then and they walked out of the shop to find the car which Puck had taken for a test drive and was now waiting for them out the front.
He got out of the driver's seat smeared his hands on his pants and looked up at them "All ready to go, don't expect a freebie next time, it was in a pretty rough condition,"
"We didn't even expect one this time," Kurt snapped and got in the passenger seat glancing at Blaine first "Come on let's go, thank you," He said to Puck through gritted teeth.
"Wait sorry," Blaine said before Puck could leave and then he groaned as he turned back around to face them "What? I do have a job you know, one which requires that I get paid and where Carole and Burt can earn a living," He's kind of rude. Kurt thought glaring from the window which he had turned down so he could talk if needed.
"Do you know where Mc Kinley High School is from here?" Blaine asked. He didn't have a GPS or an address book so he had been hoping to find it upon searching Lima, but he'd rather spend time with Kurt IN Lima then looking for the school.
Noah narrowed his eyes at Blaine "I'm going there in 30 minutes if you want to wait till I finish, then you can just follow my car,"
"Thank you, are you going to the Night of Neglect?" Kurt asked from the car. He may not like the boy much for his crudeness, but he was decent enough to show them the way at least. The boy with the Mohawk laughed a bitterish laugh "Yeah…I'm performing there, Finn and I have to get there early for rehearsals, it starts at 7 if you want, but it cost money to enter" Kurt looked at Noah closely…he looked oddly familiar but before he could ask if he knew him from somewhere Blaine was closing Kurt's still open door.
"We don't mind paying," Blaine said then and then got in the driver's seat before Noah could make another remark. "Do you mind if we get coffee first?"
"Sure, but if you're not back in 30 minutes don't expect me to be waiting,"
