The next morning Kurt slowly woke up from his sedated state. He had a pounding headache and couldn't figure out what had happened for it to be there.
He shifted in the bed tugging at the IV in his arm. He took a quick glance around the room and finally remembered what had happened the previous night. He quickly shot to a sitting up position to see if he could see Blaine.
He looked to his right and saw his beaten boyfriend lying in the bed next to him. He never knew that the sound of a heart monitor beeping could be so comforting. He thought he had completely lost Blaine the previous night.
He wanted to get up and go over and sit next to Blaine, but his body wasn't on the same page.
Burt walked into the room just as Kurt laid back down. “How you feeling?” He asked his son.
“Foggy. Weak. Sore.” Kurt answered weakly realizing that his jaw was practically immobile.
“George got you pretty good last night.” Kurt just looked over at Blaine.
“Here Finn got you this.” He handed Kurt a small dry-erase board. Kurt tried to smile.
He quickly wrote something down. “What happened to him? How is he?”
“George really did a number on Blaine.” Burt started. “I don't want to put too much on you right now. You're not 100% yet.”
“I don't care.” Kurt wrote down.
“Alright. From what they can tell his hands were exposed to a combination of extreme heat and extreme cold. They know that he was exposed to electroshock therapy after finding the kit in the building.
“Broken ribs, shattered arm, broken jaw, brain trauma, internal bleeding. His body was in shock when he got here last night.”
“When is he gonna wake up?” Kurt wrote.
“This is not an easy thing for me to tell you, bud.” Burt paused and looked into his son's eyes. He knew that telling him the severity of Blaine's case would break him. “The doctor says it's a very slim chance he'll ever wake up.”
Without anything else Kurt was in tears. Losing Blaine was his worst nightmare and now it was beginning to come to life.
“The doctors are doing everything they can to get him to wake up. They won't stop fighting until Blaine stop fighting.”
“Blaine won't stop.” Kurt wrote on his board.
“That's why we all have hope.” Burt smiled at his son.
“Can I sit with him? Please?” He wrote out.
“Let me see if I can get a nurse to get you closer.” Burt said and walked out of the room.
As soon as Burt left the room the doctor taking care of both boys came in. “How are you feeling, Mr. Hummel?” He asked.
“How long until I can talk again?” Kurt wrote on his bored.
“About two weeks and you'll be back to normal.” The doctor saw the look on Kurt's face. “If you wouldn't have kept talking last night it would have been less healing time.”
“Can I move closer to Blaine?” Kurt wrote on his board.
“As soon as the IV is taken out.” The doctor told him. “Within the next day or so. You seem to be doing okay and won't need it much longer.”
Burt walked back in with the nurse. “We're going to wait to move him until the IV is out.” The doctor said knowing exactly why Burt had brought the nurse in.
“Alright, doctor. Kurt, do you need anything?” The nurse asked him.
“I'm very hungry.” Kurt wrote down.
“Just a warning everything you eat will be fed to you through a straw until your jaw heals.” The nurse told him. Kurt let out a slight groan. “I know it's no fun.”
She left the room to get Kurt his food when the Glee girls came rushing into his room. “Kurt!” Rachel screamed.
Kurt wanted to tell her not to get on the bed, but his hand couldn't write fast enough. “Are you gonna be able to sing for nationals?” Rachel asked him.
“No!” Mercedes told her. “Even if he could; he's not going to leave Blaine.”
“Thank you.” Kurt wrote towards Mercedes.
Finn and Puck came into the room with flowers and balloons in their hands. “From McKinley, from Glee, Dalton, the Warblers, family, classmates; pretty much anyone you ever talked to.” Finn said as he and Puck set the gifts down.
Mr. Shue and Coach Beiste came into the room. “Hey, let's go get food. We've been up all night waiting for Kurt to wake up.” Finn said.
“How are you?” Mr. Shue asked Kurt.
“Hungry, but okay.A lot of pain.” Kurt wrote down.
“Broken jaw?” Coach Beiste asked.
“Fractured.” He wrote. “Two weeks.”
“You'll be up singing in no time.” Mr. Shue told him. “You should get some rest. Can't wait to have you back in Glee club. And we're all very happy you're okay.”
They both left the room, leaving Kurt and Blaine alone. Kurt stood up carefully gripping tightly onto the chair next to Blaine's bed and his IV pole.
He wanted to crawl into the bed with Blaine, but knew that would be far too difficult with the IV in his arm.
He just sat holding Blaine's hand and waited for the nurse to come back with his food.
Kurt scanned over Blaine's wounds and got a good look at the damage. His heart broke when he saw him. The cuts and bruises and knowing what was going on inside his body. It was almost too much. ‘What if he doesn't wake up? What if he does and doesn't remember our time together and we're forced to start over?” Kurt thought to himself.
He wanted to so badly kiss Blaine; to touch him again.
“Kurt?” He heard his nurse say behind him. “I've got your food.”
Kurt looked up and saw her standing there. She saw the tears in his eyes. “You've got to have some nutrition, but I can give it to you while you sit there. Just one second.” She repositioned herself so she could help Kurt with his food that day. “How long were you two together?” She asked him.
“3 months.” Kurt wrote to her.
“Sweet. By the way you clung to him last night I can tell you really love him.”
“I do.” He wrote down.
“Well, anyone could see it.”
“What happened? I don't remember.” Kurt wrote down on his board.
“You both were rushed in. You refused to let go. Your step-mother kept trying to pull you away so the doctors could look at your jaw, but you wouldn't budge.” She smiled at him. “When the doctors took Blaine into surgery you tried to follow. Luckily your brother got you to calm down so the doctor could look at you.”
Kurt chuckled slightly. Of course it would have been Finn to calm him down. She began to help Kurt drink his food and talked to him about life.
After he was done he was very tired so he laid back down in his bed facing Blaine. The pain killers had really taken a toll on him. He tried to fight off sleep the best he could, but it eventually won.
About two hours later a man walked into the hospital. “I'm looking for Blaine D. Anderson. He was admitted last night.” He said to the receptionist.
“One moment.” She said typing into her computer. “Mr. Anderson is on a strict guest list set up by his guardians right now. I'll have to bring them in. What is your name?”
“Cooper Anderson.”
“Your relation to the patient?”
“I'm his brother.”
Just then Burt and Carole came into through the main entrance. “Cooper!” Burt hollered.
“Mr. Hummel, how is he?” Cooper asked giving Burt a hug.
“Not good. We'll take you up.” Burt said motioning for Cooper to follow them. “This is my wife Carole.”
“It's so nice to meet you. Not under these circumstances, but in general. Thank you both for taking such good care of him.” Cooper said. “What happened?”
Burt and Carole both stopped dead in their tracks. Burt didn't want to tell Cooper the story over the phone so he waited, but now he was hesitant to tell him at all.
“Let's just take you to Blaine. We can talk about it later.” Carole said.
They finally reached Blaine's room. He walked it and he saw a sleeping Kurt at first. “Him too? Dear lord.” He went over to look at Kurt. “What happened? I want to know before I look at my brother.”
“You're going to want to sit down.” Burt told him. Cooper sat down next to Kurt's bed. “I'm going to start from the very beginning. These two reconnected several months ago through school. Weeks after that Blaine made a discovery about himself. That he was gay.”
“Blaine's gay? I never would have guessed.” Cooper said sounding very shocked. “Wait, were these two?” Burt and Carole only nodded. “Figures his first boyfriend would be Kurt. Makes sense after seeing them as kids. They were always really close.”
“It made perfect sense to me as well.” Burt agreed with him. “Your parents didn't see it the same way you do. Your dad sent him to a therapist to turn him straight.”
“Right wing conservatives.” Cooper sighed.
“Yes, and when it didn't work. Your dad resorted to torture. He called it therapy, but Blaine's hands are really beat up and when he got here his body was in shock from electroshock therapy.”
“Where's my mom?” Cooper asked. Burt and Carole only looked at each other. “He didn't. How?”
“Three flights of stairs.” Burt told him.
“Thank you for not lying to me or try to keep me from the truth. You were always a good man.” Cooper said with tears forming in his eyes. “What's Blaine's condition?”
“There's so much; ribs, arm, internal bleeding, brain swelling, and a lot of contusions. Right now he's comatose and they don't know if he's ever going to recover.” Burt told him.
“He's just right there?” He pointed to the curtain between the boys.
Burt and Carole nodded.
Cooper pulled the curtain away revealing is brother to him. He dropped to his knees at the bed. “No.” He wept.
Burt and Carole slowly left the room.
After around thirty minutes Cooper came out. “I want to see my father. Where is he?”
“County jail…for now.” Burt told him.
Cooper stormed out of the hospital and headed for the jail.
Cooper waited patiently while they gathered George and put them in a private room with a guard.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” Cooper screamed.
“Cooper, it's nice to see you.” George said calmly.
“Blaine is in a coma. Mom is dead. What did you do?” Cooper yelled louder.
“I did what I had to do.” George said.
Cooper couldn't stay there without trying to kill him. He simply left the room.
He stood outside the room for a moment and stared at the guard. “Are you done, sir?” The guard asked him.
“No.” Cooper said and walked back in. “Why?”
“Why what?” His father responded.
“Why would you treat your son like that? Why would you almost kill him? Why would you kill mom? Why did you kill Dr. Briggs? Why?” Cooper said fighting back tears.
“Blaine is gay. That is unacceptable. I cannot let a faggot son ruin my reputation.” George said arrogantly.
“What reputation? It's gone.” Cooper told him. “You killed two people and Blaine is comatose. You think you're still gonna have a good reputation after this?” He asked.
“I'll get off.” He said.
Cooper couldn't believe what he was hearing. There was no way his father was getting off after this. The evidence was all too clear against him. His finger prints were everywhere at the crime scene and Blaine's blood was found all over him.
“Dad, you're done.” Cooper said blankly. He didn't have any feelings left for the man sitting in front of him. He couldn't even pretend; not with his little brother lying in a hospital bed almost dead.
“Leave, Cooper.” George said.
Cooper silently got up from his chair and left the room. He told that guard he was finished and headed back for the hospital to spend as much time with Blaine as he possibly could.
When he got back to the room Kurt was awake attempting to eat something.
“Cooper?” Kurt wrote down on his board.
“Hey, kid.” Cooper said with a slight smile on his face. It was nice seeing Kurt again; he reminded Cooper of his brother. “Why don't you tell me about you and Blaine.”
They both needed this. Cooper hadn't seen Blaine in over a year. Kurt began to write on his board. “It's been 3 months. It's been really hard. I live 2 hours away.”
“Rough. Were you two sneaking out?”
“Don't tell my dad.” He wrote.
“Do you love him?”
Kurt looked over at Blaine. Cooper saw a tear go down his face. Cooper knew. “More than anything.” Kurt wrote down.
Cooper could see that Kurt was still tired from the pain killers and needed sleep. “You get some rest, kid. I'll talk to you tomorrow.” Cooper hugged Kurt and left the room.
“Cooper, this is Jean Cummings. Blaine's social worker.” Carole said as soon as Cooper shut the hospital room door.
“It's nice to meet you.” Cooper said shaking her hand.
“Mr. Anderson, we need to speak about your brother's situation.” She told him.
“He's in a severe coma. There's not much to talk about.” Cooper said.
“Not his medical situation; his living situation.” She said.
“I can't take care of a 16 year-old. I can barely take care of myself.” Cooper said and looked over at the Hummel's. “Let him live with Burt and Carole. I've known Burt for years. He's a good man. He wouldn't put his son in this position.” Cooper said glancing in at Kurt and Blaine.
Kurt had gotten up and was sitting in the chair next to Blaine's bed holding his callused hand. Everyone could tell that he was sobbing.
“Cooper, this is a big decision.”
“Not really.” Cooper responded to Burt. “He's 16. I'm an actor living in Hollywood without a steady paycheck nor one that can support the both of us. And look at that boy in there; the one sobbing over my brother's body. I can't take Blaine away from him.” He continued. “So much has been taken from my brother in the last 24 hours; I don't intend on me taking him away from Kurt.
“I can't do that to either of them. Kurt starts to tear up just at the mention of Blaine's name. It wouldn't be fair.” He finished.
“Alright.” Mrs. Cummings said. “You're completely sure?”
Cooper looked into the room. “Completely. I just want to be able to see him.”
“Anytime.” Carole told him.
Several days passed without a change in Blaine's health. Kurt could speak a little now and wasn't using the dry erase board as much. He was eating soft foods instead of liquids and he sat up every night holding Blaine's hand.
Kurt hadn't slept in three days. He tried as hard as he possibly could. He would slide into Blaine's bed and attempt to sleep with his arms wrapped around his boyfriend, but it didn't work.
He had thought the nightmares before the incident were bad, but those had nothing on the things that were going through his head now. Every night he would wake up screaming of fear reliving the beating in his mind. He wondered what was going on in Blaine's mind while he was asleep. Did coma patients dream?
After five days without sleep the doctor decided it was time to sedate him to make him rest. He couldn't go much longer without at least one night of good rest; even if it was medically induced.
Cooper came into the room the morning after Kurt's first sleep in a week. “The nurse let me bring you your breakfast.” He said setting the tray down. “I'll try to sneak you something actually edible later.”
“Thanks.” Kurt said. “This shit is disgusting.” He said pushing the food around the tray with the plastic fork. “This place is supposed to help people not make them ill with the food.”
“But you've got to eat no matter how gross it looks.” Cooper said. Kurt began to slowly eat the food Cooper brought him. “When did Blaine figure it out?”
“About three months ago or so. It was weird.” Kurt said forcing a few bites of the food down. “We were watching a movie and he just started kissing me.”
Cooper laughed. “Sounds like Blaine.”
“Not that I minded. As soon as I saw him perform at sectionals I had this massive crush.” Kurt told him. “I think I've a little crush on him since we were kids, actually.” Kurt admitted.
“Well, when you're dad told him that you and Blaine were an item I wasn't shocked to be honest.” Cooper told him. “You two kind of gave off that vibe.”
“We were eight that last time you saw us together. How did we give off that vibe?” Kurt asked him.
Cooper laughed. Kurt was completely right. “I don't know.” He told him. “But you two are happy? And he's good to you?”
“We're really happy. He makes me happier than I have ever been. And he's great to me. Treats me like a man should.” Kurt told him with a large smile on his face. “You should be very proud of the man your brother has become. He's strong.” Kurt told him.
“We didn't leave things on the best of terms before I left for Los Angeles full time.” Cooper told Kurt.
“What happened?” Kurt asked trying to push more food into his mouth.
“I've always been really hard on Blaine. I just want him to be the best he could possibly be.” Cooper said to him. “So I push. He's so talented I want him to blow up on screen and on stage.”
“He already blew up on stage. He's said to be one of the most loved Gavroche's ever to step foot on the Broadway stage.” Kurt said with a smile. “But you're right; he is so talented that he's going to be known all over the world.” Kurt said cheerfully.
They both looked over to Blaine; still motionless in his bed.
Days started to become weeks. Kurt was released from the hospital and Blaine was given a private room paid for by George's new attorney trying to show good faith. He had a larger bed that had enough room for Kurt to slide in when no one was around and sleep next to Blaine. Kurt had Finn bring him all of his homework from school and completed it sitting next to Blaine's bed. He hadn't been back to McKinley since it happened and didn't want to go back until Blaine was awake.
The doctor said the chances of Blaine waking up were still slim but getting better. This gave Kurt all the hope in the world. Kurt would read to Blaine and sometimes sing portions of Broadway hits.
Burt and Carole walked into the Child Protective Services office in Columbus to see Mrs. Cummings and finalize all of the guardianship papers.
“Now you don't want to adopt Blaine; just take guardianship?” Jean asked them.
“Correct. It would be weird if we adopted him. Considering his and Kurt's relationship.”
Jean laughed. “Agreed.” She wrote a few things down on the papers and looked up at the couple before her. “We have consent of next of kin and because his mother has passed and his father is in jail this should be the end of the paper work.” She told them.
They both signed the papers and smiled at each other.
Around three o'clock in the afternoon four weeks after the incident a man in an expensive suit walked into the hospital room that Blaine was in. “Kurt Hummel?” The man asked.
“Yes?” Kurt responded turning around.
“My name is Hector Smith. I'm the prosecution attorney in George Anderson's case.” He reached his hand out to greet Kurt.
“Nice to meet you.” Kurt said taking the man's hand.
“I just want to ask you a few questions. Since Blaine cannot.” He said sitting down in the other chair in the room.
“Of course.” Kurt said pulling his chair around to sit closer to the lawyer.
“What do you remember of that night?”
“I got a call from one of Blaine's friends at Dalton saying not to text him and that he wasn't going home.” Kurt started. “I eventually got a text from Blaine with photos of where he was. I just remember feeling ill the entire night.”
“Why?” Hector asked him.
“I'm not sure.” Kurt said. “Well, you know how they say when you're really close to someone you can feel their pain?”
“Understood. You share a deep personal connection with Blaine?” He asked Kurt.
“Yes.” Kurt said looking over at his boyfriend again.
“What else?”
“After several hours I got another text from Blaine saying he was going home and that he loved me.” Kurt told him afraid of how he might react to him saying Blaine loved him. “My brother, a friend, and I drove down to Westerville from Lima to his house and called the police on the way. We got there and I entered the house. George hit me in the jaw and I saw Blaine lying motionless on the floor.” Kurt told him.
“You can only assume that Blaine's state was due to George Anderson's actions?” Hector asked him.
“Yes. Mr. Anderson had blood all over him and a look of pure evil in his eyes.” Kurt told him. “I'd known the man since I was six and I never once saw him in the state I saw him that night.” Kurt said to the attorney.
“The report said a Noah Puckerman was on top of George Anderson when the police arrived?”
“Yeah, Mr. Anderson had me pinned against a wall when Noah and Finn came into the house. Noah punched him in order to get him to let go of me.” Kurt said afraid that it might hurt the case.
“Thank you. I believe that the physical evidence is more than enough to put George Anderson in prison for most of his life. I'm hoping I won't have to call you to the stand in order to convince the judge of that.” Hector told him. “The look in your eyes show me how difficult it is to talk about, naturally. I don't want to put you through this more than you have to. You're only a kid.”
“Thank you so much, Mr. Smith.” Kurt said to him. “Please do everything in your power to put that man behind bars for life.”
“It won't take much.” Mr. Smith told him. “Thank you for speaking with me.”
“No problem.” Kurt said as the man stood up. Kurt walked him to the door.
“I sincerely hope he wakes up soon. No child should be put in that situation.” Mr. Smith told him.
“Thank you.” Kurt said as he watched Hector Smith walked down the hallway of the hospital.
Kurt turned back to Blaine.
“Blaine! Blaine! Blaine!”A young Kurt Hummel yelled as he came flying into the rehearsal room.
“What?” Blaine asked with as much enthusiasm.
“I got cast in ‘The Sound of Music'!” Kurt almost yelled.
“Oh my gosh.” Blaine gave him a giant hug. “When do you open?”
“Four weeks. You have to come watch.” Kurt said to his friend.
“No! I open in Les Mis in four weeks.” Blaine said with a sad tone. “We won't get to see each other.”
“What? That sucks.” Kurt told him.
“I'm sure you're gonna be great. You're so good here.” Blaine said with a huge smile on his face.
“You too. I really wish I could see it though.”Kurt told him.
“Me too.”
Kurt came out of his memory daze when Finn walked in the room. “How are you?” He asked his brother.
“Physically fine.” Kurt responded and walked back over to Blaine. “Finn, I really can't lose him. I've never been so happy.” He took Blaine's hand as he sat down in the chair next to his bed.
“Kurt, I want to tell you everything's gonna be fine…” Finn started.
“Thank you for not. Because the truth is no one knows. Not even the doctors know if he's gonna be fine.” Kurt said starting to cry. “Thank you for not lying to me, Finn.”
Finn simply put his hands on Kurt's shoulders standing behind him; just trying to comfort his brother.
It had been six weeks Blaine was in the hospital. Burt and Carole had to force Kurt to go back to school. Finals and nationals were coming up.
Kurt had decided after a long discussion with his parents and Mr. Shue that he would sit out of nationals and stay with Blaine.
Even though Mr. Shue wanted Kurt to be at nationals because of his experience on stage he knew that this wasn't going to be something to argue about. He knew that Blaine was more important than a national's trophy.
Every day at school Kurt could hear people whispering about Blaine and what had happened as if they'd been there to see it.
It irritated Kurt to no end. Puck tried to keep the school quiet from the gossip by threatening everybody, but they all kept talking.
Kurt would hide in the choir room while at lunch and wouldn't talk to anyone. Some people came up to him to say ‘sorry'. Karofsky wasn't coming after him anymore, which he was thankful for.
But his days were endless until he got to the hospital each day; then they passed too quickly. Worse yet; they passed without Blaine waking up.
After two and a half months of sitting and talking to himself; Kurt was beginning to lose hope that he would ever talk to Blaine again.
One night Kurt crawled into the bed and cuddled up next to his sleeping boyfriend. He had decided that the next day he was going to sit and tell Blaine it was alright to let go; to stop fighting. He was going to tell Blaine he would be fine without him.
Blaine's face was wet from Kurt's tears that night. Kurt's arm wrapped tightly around Blaine's body trying to feel close to him one more time. He kept placing soft kisses on Blaine's cheek and occasionally on his lips.
He didn't want to say goodbye to Blaine, but knew that it was wrong keeping him like this. He couldn't do it and feel good about himself knowing Blaine was in a vegetable like state.
Sleep had eluded Kurt that night and was replaced by sobs.
Around one o'clock Kurt had gotten up and started to pace the room trying to wear himself out.
He crawled back into bed with Blaine and heard an almost silent moan. He didn't make the noise; he figured he must be imagining things.
He snuggled his face into Blaine's neck and attempted to fall asleep.
Kurt felt something move on his thigh. He jumped up quickly thinking it was some sort of bug. Then he heard the moan again.
This time he knew that he heard it. He knew he felt something move next to his thigh.
He looked over at Blaine and knew that he was beginning to wake up. He collapsed at the side of Blaine's bed and took his hand in his own. “It's okay, honey. I'm right here.” Blaine gently tightened his grip around Kurt's hand. Kurt broke into violent sobs of relief and happiness.
He knew he should go get the nurse, but he didn't want to let go of Blaine's hand. “Nurse!” Kurt yelled hoping one was near so he didn't have to leave the room.
After several more minutes Blaine's grip on Kurt' hand was getting tighter and tighter and Kurt couldn't bring himself to leave the room. Blaine's soft moaning began to get a little louder and Kurt's tears were getting thicker.
After almost ten minutes Kurt decided he had to get up and get a nurse. “I'll be right back, sweetie.” He said standing and stroking Blaine's arm. With a moan as a response Kurt knew Blaine was waking up and he could hear him again.
He rushed out of the room in search for a nurse.
He finally found one and they both ran back to Blaine's room to check on him.
The nurse noticed his eye lids beginning to flutter. “I'll call the doctor.” She said quickly leaving the room.
Kurt went back to holding Blaine's hand. He brought his boyfriend's hand up to his chest and held on as tightly as he could. “I'm right here.” He reached down to touch Blaine's face. “I love you so much, Blaine.”
The nurse came rushing in again. “You might want to call your parents.” She told Kurt.
He reluctantly let go of Blaine and went to call his parents. While he was on the phone the doctor came running into Blaine's room.
“When did it start happening?” He asked the nurse.
“About half an hour ago.” She told him.
“He's continuing to wake up?” He asked checking all of his vitals.
“Yes, his grip got very tight around Mr. Hummel's hand and his moans are gradually getting louder.” She told him.
“Good. Perfect. Outstanding!” The doctor exclaimed. He would never admit it to the Hummel's but he had lost all hope of Blaine ever waking up. “Alright, Mr. Anderson, you've got to work with us. We've not come this far to fall backwards.” The doctor told him.
Kurt came back into the room to see the doctor bent over Blaine' bed intensely.
Kurt walked over to Blaine and gently ran his fingers through his messing, curly hair. As soon as Blaine felt Kurt's hand on his head his eyes slowly opened.
Blaine winced at the sudden light in the room closing them again tightly. “Come on, Blaine, keep them open.” The doctor pleaded with him.
Kurt kept one hand in Blaine's hair the entire time. “Come on, honey.” Kurt whispered just before he bent down and kissed Blaine's forehead.
“Come back.” They heard Blaine say faintly, barely loud enough to hear.
“Yes!” The doctor exclaimed. “Oh good, Blaine, good.”
Burt, Carole, and Finn all came bursting through the door.
“He's talking.” Kurt said through tears. “Sort of.”
They all stood around Blaine's bed watching as he slowly came back to life. Each time something new happened the doctor got more and more excited.
He was able to wiggle his toes and grip onto Kurt's hand; he wouldn't take anyone else's. When no one was looking Kurt leant down and kissed his lips, he kissed him back. Kurt pulled away with a huge smile on his face. This was the happiest moment of his life.
After a few hours of watching Blaine slowly wake up the doctor left the room satisfied with the results and Kurt was holding his hand and stroking his arm. He was pushing back the curls on his smiling boyfriend's head. His smiling boyfriend. Smiling.
Every time Blaine attempted to speak to Kurt; Kurt would tell him to be quiet and rest.
“I've been asleep for a while.” Blaine joked.
“Not funny.” Kurt responded. “Your body needs to recuperate.”
“Is my brother here?”
“Cooper!” Kurt yelped. “I'll call him.” Kurt slowly walked away from Blaine to call Cooper.
“Do I get to call you dad now?” Blaine asked Burt.
“No. But since you will be living with us I think Mr. Hummel is a little formal. I guess I can settle with Burt.” Burt told him. “But Blaine, Kurt is right you need to rest. Don't overdo yourself.”
“I'm fine.” Blaine insisted. “Speaking of fine; where did my boyfriend go?”
“That is the kind of thing that is going to have you sleeping in a tent in the backyard.” Burt told him with a smirk on his face.
“Sorry.” Blaine said and stopped looking for Kurt.
“I know I'm hard on you, Blaine.” Burt said sitting down next to him.
“I get it. You're protecting Kurt.” Blaine told him. “He's your little boy.”
“Glad you understand.” Burt told him. “Because Blaine, you've been like another son to me and I love you like my own.”
Blaine didn't have any words for what Burt had just told him. He was so touched by Burt's generosity.
Moments later Cooper and Kurt came bursting in the door. “Squirt!” Cooper said running to his little brother's side.
“Coop.” Blaine said upon seeing his brother.
“I'm so happy you're awake.” Cooper said taking Blaine's hand in his own. “You're awake and alive and alright.” He bent over and touched their foreheads together. “I'm sorry for how I've treated you in the past, Blainey.”
“Forget it. That seems like nothing now. You're just trying to help me get better. I thank you for that.” Blaine told his crying brother.
“Alright,” the doctor entered the room. “Blaine needs to rest. Everyone out.” He said checking around Blaine's machines.
“Kurt?” Blaine asked giving the doctor the eyes that Kurt loved but hated at the same time. He was giving the doctor the look that could convince anyone to do anything for him.
“One night. In the chair.” The doctor said looking from Blaine to Kurt.
Both boys nodded then shared a look saying they knew Kurt was going to end up in the bed.
Everyone said their ‘goodnights' and left the hospital. Kurt pulled up a chair next to the bed and took Blaine's hand.
“Kurt, I want to ask you something.” Blaine said once the doctor and nurse left the room.
“What is it?”
“What happened that night?”
Kurt was taken aback by this. He really didn't want to tell Blaine about that night, at all. It thought it best for him to be left in the dark. He knew it wouldn't be possible with the trial coming up. And he knew that Mr. Smith would be in soon to speak with Blaine and it would be much easier if he heard what had happened from Kurt instead of a prosecutor.
“Let's not talk about it tonight.” Kurt told him fixing his blanket and pillow. “Are you comfortable?”
“I'd be more comfortable with you next to me.” Blaine said reaching for Kurt's arm. “Come here. I want to lay with you.” Blaine said pulling Kurt towards him.
“Are you sure?” Kurt asked. “You just woke up and you're not 100% yet.”
“I'm sure that I want to feel you next to me.” Blaine said. “Please.”
“Alright.” Kurt said and crawled into bed with Blaine.
Blaine wrapped his arm around Kurt's back. Kurt missed this feeling. He missed feeling Blaine touch him.
“How are you?” Blaine asked.
“I'm perfect. Now that you're awake.” Kurt responded.
“Kurt, I do remember what happened that night.”
“Shh. Don't think about that.” Kurt said fussing with Blaine's hospital pajamas.
“I saw my worst nightmare come to life.” He told him. Kurt assumed it was his father beating him. “He hit you. He hit you and I couldn't help you.” Blaine said with tears coming to his eyes.
“Hey, hey, I'm fine. My jaw was a little busted up for a while, but I'm fine.” Kurt told him drying his tears. “We're fine; and together. Nothing else matters.” He leaned in for a kiss.
It felt amazing to have Blaine kissing him back again. He spent weeks kissing limp lips just hoping they would come to life.
It didn't take Blaine long before he was pushing his tongue into Kurt's mouth. Kurt quickly pulled away. “We are in a hospital. You just came out of a coma and you've already attempted to get some.”
“Nowhere on that list of what I can and cannot do did it say ‘sex'.” Blaine told him.
“But it did say ‘no elevated heart rate' and ‘no heavy breathing'.” Kurt told him. “Plus, honey, it's been eight hours since you woke up. When you're out of here and completely cleared by the doctor; I'll consider it.” Kurt laughed and kissed Blaine again.
“I guess that is alright.” Blaine said moving to kiss him again.
“Come on. Let's get some rest. We both deserve it.” Kurt said snuggling down next to Blaine. He wrapped on arm across Blaine's upper body while Blaine's hand wrapped around Kurt's back.
Finally, after two and a half months, Kurt was able to start feeling content again. His boyfriend was alive and awake and wanting sex again. He knew everything was going to be okay.
In the middle of the night Kurt was woken up by a thrashing Blaine. Kurt quickly rolled out of the bed and attempted to wake Blaine up.
When Blaine finally woke up from his nightmare he looked at Kurt. “I need to know what happened.”
“Blaine, I don't think—“
“Kurt, please.” Blaine pleaded. “I won't be able to sleep until I know.”
Kurt hesitated. He really didn't want to tell Blaine exactly what happened; not yet anyways. He had decided he'd wait a day or more until he thought the time was right. But standing there in front of his terrified boyfriend made him rethink his plan.
“Fine; even though I don't think it's a good idea right now. You don't need added stress—“
“Kurt.”
“You said you remembered everything.” Kurt said.
“Most of it. I remember sending you that text saying that ‘I loved you'. And I remember seeing you walk into my house. My dad hit you and Puck came in and hit him.” Blaine told him recalling the night in question.
“Anything else?”
Blaine paused for a moment. “I thought my mom was going to help me at one point. And I saw my dad kill Dr. Briggs.” He paused again. “Where's my mom?”
Kurt completely forgot he didn't know about his mother. “Um, she's…” Kurt trailed off.
“No.” Blaine broke down.
Kurt quickly got back into the bed with Blaine and wrapped his arms around Blaine's body. Kurt didn't know what to say. He knew exactly what was racing through Blaine's head, partially because he knew Blaine, but mostly he knew how it felt to lose a parent. And Blaine had lost two. So he just held him tightly while he cried.
They lied entwined in each other, awake, all night. Kurt would occasionally run his fingers through Blaine's messy hair.
Around eleven o'clock they started speaking again. “Could you have your dad pick up some hair gel for me?” Blaine asked.
“Absolutely not.”
“Why?” Blaine asked looking at Kurt.
“Because I like running my fingers through your hair and I'm gonna do it as long as I can.” Kurt told him. “As soon as we get you home you can use all the hair gel you like.”
The doctor came back in the room. “How are you feeling?” He asked Blaine. “I thought I said in the chair, Mr. Hummel?”
Kurt quickly slid out of the bed and into the chair next to Blaine.
