He had traveled just under 2000 miles by plane, around 18 miles by train, then probably another 13 by bus. It was fair to say, Kurt Hummel was exhausted. And if traveling 2032 miles wasn't enough, he was now trekking down what seemed to be an eternal road under the suns scorching rays; a road that seemed to grow devastatingly longer the further he walked. But despite his blistered feet and surely sunburned cheeks, Kurt was on a mission. He marched on determinedly, clutching his too large suitcase and 3 shoulder bags packed full with clothes and moisturizing accessories.
Kurt was signed up for a whole summer at RoseMill Ranch, a little trekking center many miles west of Calgary, up in the Rocky Mountains somewhere. His father, Burt Hummel, had put his name down through the organization Camp Canada after Kurt's strenuous and excessive bullying back home in Lima, Ohio. Sadly, being gay back home wasn't really appreciated by the local jock-straps and Neanderthals. Burt couldn't bear to see his son suffer with little to do during his summer weeks, although he did have a job. Kurt worked long hours at the local stables, he did enjoy some aspects of it, such as the horses and chores, but the people and pay there weren't so nice, which made even the though of riding sound tedious.
Another hour passed and Kurt was still walking on the same sun stained road. He was beginning to feel a tad lost. A man from the bar in the town he was last at pointed him in this direction; Kurt was starting to believe that the guy in the bar was crazy; he couldn't possibly walk any further...
Just as he began considering turning around and just going back he heard a soft rumble coming from behind him. Oh great... I'm hallucinating. As it turned out though, he wasn't. Somewhere, far in the distance, a rusty red truck was chugging along the stretch of grey road. "Yes!" Kurt cried, "Civilization, finally!" He walked on, the truck was still far in the distance, and it didn't really look as the driver was flooring it down the road so he just kept walking. There was always the possibility of the guy (or girl) being a creep, or thinking that he himself was a creep and just drive on. Even if that, he could just ask for directions, and put him out of his misery.
He must have walked ten more minutes in the dusty dry land before the truck drew very close to him. He turned, stopped and stuck his thumb out in a kind of shameful way. The old Chevy rumbled to a halt when the driver became level with Kurt. It was a man, a young man by the looks of it behind the wheel; he couldn't see much of his face, just a well defined chin and neck covered in short black stubble.
"Howdy." Was the first thing he said to Kurt, in a soft, grizzly sort of way. He lifted his hat to reveal his face; his gorgeous face. He had to be no older than twenty years old. He had bright, friendly hazel eyes and face that was clearly chiseled by the great god himself.
"Hi," Kurt said back, a nervous quiver in his voice.
"And where would a fine fellow like you be heading with bags that size?" He asked with a cheeky smile on his face, glancing at the amount of Kurt luggage.
"I'm off to RoseMill Ranch, but I've been walking for hours! The local bar keep told me to come dow-"he began to say but was cut off mid sentence by this handsome stranger, pointing in the direction of the small town he arrived at on the bus.
"Toss your trunk in the back, that's where I'm heading; you'd be walking for at least another couple hours, especially with the case." He pointed at his trunk. "Here, I'll help you, you must be exhausted!" The young man jumped out the truck, taking a hold of Kurt's trunk and placing it carefully into the back of his truck. Kurt couldn't help admire the way his body flexed as he lifted the heavy load over the barrier. He was dressed like, well, there was only one way to describe it, a cowboy. He had a red checkered shirt which fitted his torso much to Kurt's liking and loose fitting jeans along with brown leather boots and his hat, of course.
"Thank you so much for this!" Kurt said, genuinely happy to get a rest and meet someone who would potentially be spending the summer with him. "It's no problem to me!" This guy said with a wink. "Take a seat." He said as he sat back behind the wheel. Kurt almost skipped around the front of the truck, dying for a seat.
When he sat down and closed the door he threw his head back and moaned his mouth gaping open like a fish out of water. The guy beside him laughed, with raised eyebrows, looking at Kurt.
"I'm sorry, I've not even introduced myself and I'm already moaning like I'm in bed!" Kurt said with a laugh, "It's just so nice to finally sit down!" He moaned again.
"You're alright," the stranger laughed back, "My name's Blaine, Blaine Anderson." He said with a bright smile and extended hand. Kurt smiled back
"I'm Kurt, Kurt Hummel." He took Blaine's rough hand and shook it, instantly noticing the difference from smooth to rough skin, it made Kurt blush a little bit.
"Well Kurt Hummel, It's nice to meet you. This is the first time I've ever had a handsome stranger in ol' Betty." He said, starting the car and pulling slowly away. Kurt decided to skip the compliment, if it was one, he still didn't know this guy, although he seemed perfectly lovely, he didn't even know if he was gay yet.
"Ol' Betty?" he asked.
"Yup," Blaine said patting the dashboard. "named her after my first love." He said fondly.
Aw. Great, "You're first love? Are you still with her?" Kurt asked with what was masked with genuine interest on Blaine's behalf.
"God no, that filly passed away years ago."
"You mean she was a horse?" Kurt was hoping. Blaine nodded.
There was silence for a little while whilst Kurt got himself comfortable in the old seats. He was beginning to dose off when Blaine asked "So what brings you to RoseMill?"
"Oh, uh, I'm working here for the summer." He said in a thick voice and dopey eyes.
"Are you the kid from camp Canada?" Blaine asked with a lot of interest, suddenly perking up.
"Mmhm, my dad signed me up, I'd be working at my local stables anyway, I just needed a change." Kurt rubbed his eyes, forcing himself to sit upright.
"You're going to love it here!" Blaine excitedly said.
"Do you work there?"
"No, I live there!" Blaine chuckled, "My dad used to own it, but it now belongs to my uncle Mac. It's a great little patch and the trails are amazing!" Blaine jumped right into explaining RoseMill Ranch to Kurt. He was getting more exited by the minute, he learned that you get assigned a horse for the whole summer and you have to groom it, ride it, take it out on rides with tourists as part of your duties at the ranch, you also have to muck it out, as well as other horses stables and just generally do horse work.
Another mile and they were there, Kurt was simply buzzing with excitement! "Finally!" He almost shouted as they caught the first glimpse of the ranch, actually giving Blaine a little fright, who stalled the car.
There were acres and acres of lush land surrounding the settlement, the fields they had were full of horses and cattle. He could see big red barns and riding rings. A little river separated the ranch, It flowed down from somewhere on the vast landscape, up somewhere in the Rockies. The whole scene was breathtaking and it made the hair on Kurt's arms stand on end. "It's beautiful" He whispered to himself.
"It sure is." Blaine agreed. They pulled up five minutes later. Blaine offered to show Kurt his cottage and help take his luggage there. It was on the other side of the river; you had to cross a small wooden bridge, no longer that 5ft long and 3ft wide to get to it. There were a few little houses, one grand one and three little cottages. "The big one's where me and Mac live. The other three are for workers, they bunk together, but luckily for you you've got nobody to share with at the moment, if you like your privacy." Blaine explained. It was a sweet little cottage; it was big enough to live at least three people. "Don't get too comfortable, we've got a new guy starting in a few weeks, so don't make it that messy." Blaine winked at Kurt. "I'll leave you to get settled in , when you've had a rest come and find me, I wont be too far away." He winked again and left before Kurt could say anything.
Before he could even image unpacking, he had to get a drink and got for a nap. After his third glass of water he kicked off his shoes and picked the room he liked the most, It had a lovely view of the Rockies from the window and was the only room with a double bed. At this time, the soft looking covers and multiple pillows looked more attractive that Blaine. He set an alarm on the clock from his bed side take and dove face first onto the bed, falling almost instantly asleep.
