When he awoke to bright sunlight filling his room, Kurt was confused at first. He wasn't tangled up in a crazy redhead, he wasn't on a couch and his laptop and his phone were nowhere near him. He'd just begun to stir and had finally opened his eyes after an internal debate over whether he had to get up just yet or not. No one had jumped on top of him and there was no sound coming from the hallway or even Tash's room.
For a moment he was almost convinced he'd somehow woken up in the wrong apartment. Which admittedly would have been a feat in itself since he'd never left his the previous day, but still.
After a few minutes of confusion and pondering the question what he was supposed to be doing now Kurt finally got up, heading straight for the shower. Maybe this time around he could be the one bringing bagels as a surprise.
Indeed, that was exactly what happened. When he returned from the bakery an hour later (why cut his skin care regimen when he was not in any hurry), Tash had somehow managed to raise from the dead. Though it was kind of hard to see how she got into a prestigious dance school with the way she shuffled about the apartment. She was just coming out of the kitchen clinging to a mug of coffee like it was a lifeline when Kurt opened the door. Her still bleary eyes lit up the moment they fell on the paper bag.
"You got us bagels! Thank goodness. I thought I had to actually cook something for breakfast," she cheered, voice still a bit hoarse from sleep. Apparently, the prospect of baked goods had somewhat brought her back to the world of the living because the bag was out of his hand before Kurt could even think of a response.
He blinked a few times, staring at his empty hand, before laughing quietly. "Someone's quite eager, I'd say. Breakfast on your floor and reruns of Friends?"
"Sounds good to me. There's enough coffee for the both of us, so serve yourself. I'm saving myself the most comfortable spot in front of the couch in the meantime."
They ate in companionable silence for a while until Tash decided it was time to address the matters at hand. "So, tomorrow will be our last day before college starts and stress will probably get the better of us. What do we do with our last two days of freedom for now? And moreover, what do we do about household chores? I guess we have to split them somehow for the future..."
"Well, we wanted to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and the weather seems fine now. And I sort of promised Blaine livetexting during the trip, anyway. So we could do that and maybe stroll through the city for a bit after?" Kurt replied after risking a quick look out of the window to see if it was as sunny as it had been when he first woke up.
"Sounds like a plan. As for the household chores... Maybe we could make a plan? We always tried to split them into equal parts at home and it always ended with Dad lying on the couch watching football while I cleaned the bathroom. He would vacuum occasionally, but that was about it. A plan would guarantee that no one is stuck with the dirty work all the time."
Kurt agreed wholeheartedly - the wars he'd led with Finn over basic cleaning during the time they'd shared a room had left enough mental scars to not want a repeat - and minutes later the floor was covered in sharpies of every color imaginable.
They took their time figuring out who would do what when (especially since they didn't really know their schedules yet and they left it an option to switch duties in case someone had too much to do) and carefully color-coordinated everything. Half an hour later the plan adorned their hallway, hanging right next to the tacky heart. Interior designers would probably have flinched but Kurt didn't mind so much. It gave the hallway even more of a homey feel.
When they'd finally finished their breakfast, Tash headed into the shower and less than two hours later they were on their way to Ellis Island, Kurt having made sure his phone was charged so he could text Blaine everything. He started the minute they'd made themselves comfortable in the subway no too far from their apartment. They knew better now than to try and walk again if they wanted to get anywhere.
Sun 2 Sep (11:40pm)
We're on our way now. Prepare for lots of pics of the two of us.
(11:41)
Great! I was getting bored, anyway. All of the others have plans for today :(
(11:43)
Let me guess, they all have to do their homework and Mr Dapper is already done? ;)
(11:45)
You know me too well. Is it actually nice out or do you just go because you promised?
(11:47)
As if I'd go visit Ellis Island when it's raining. No, the sun is shining and everything is well. Except for the fact that you're not here :(
(11:48)
Aw. I'll be there soon, baby. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun without me.
(11:50)
Technically, I'm having lots of fun with you since livetexting counts as being with me, I guess. Wouldn't have it any other way. Why didn't we think of that the other day?
(11:52)
No idea. I don't want you to miss out on something because you're busy texting. Isn't it annoying Tash?
(11:55)
Hi Blaine, this is Tash. I sort of stole Kurt's phone - again. He should be more careful ;) I don't mind at all, keep going. I asjdfhgb
(12:01)
Tash? Kurt? Are you okay?
(12:03)
I'm fine, we just had a bit of a wrestling match until I could get my hands on my phone again. She's peaceful now. Livetexting Ro.
(12:05)
Ro was the girlfriend, right? Did you really just have a wrestling match in the streets of New York?
(12:07)
Nope, we had a wrestling match in the subway to be exact. Nobody looked at us twice. That's what I love about this city. And yes, Ro is the girlfriend. And obviously the only person to keep her somewhat calm.
(12:12)
Why do I get the feeling that you're not replying because you're doubling over with laughter?
(12:14)
Because you know me too well? Sorry, I just couldn't help it. The mental image of you wrestling with Tash in the subway. Excuse me while I laugh a little more.
(12:17)
Laugh all you want. No one is trying to steal your phone. And of course I know you, love. I can read you like a book.
(12:19)
Uh-huh. Even with all those miles between us?
(12:21)
Even with all those miles between us. Texts will get a lot less frequent now, we're just getting out of the subway.
For the next good hour or so Kurt was way too busy with keeping Tash from running into people and/or buildings while she was livetexting Rowena to find the time to send a message to Blaine. It was only when they finally got on the ferry that he had some kind of peace.
(13:48)
I can't believe how many times one person can nearly run into the same ad.
(13:50)
Tash?
(13:52)
Of course Tash. I'm not that ungraceful.
(13:54)
And why was she running into that ad?
(13:56)
She stole our idea and is currently livetexting Rowena. Someone should have told her that walking and texting are not really compatible.
(13:58)
Why didn't you? You're right next to her, after all. It would be the obvious thing to do.
(14:00)
I did tell her but she wouldn't listen. And that I'm right next to her was her excuse. Someone to catch her, you know.
(14:02)
She seems to trust you a lot already. You're a very trustable person.
(14:04)
Thanks, love. You too. I just hope she doesn't keep it up all the way. There are quite a few people headed there.
(14:06)
I'm sure you'll be able to handle that. When will you get there?
They continued their text conversation until Kurt and Tash were forced to leave the ferry. The two of them took as many pictures as possible and sent at least half of them to their respective girlfriend/boyfriend, including one of them trying to pose for the camera only to have a bird land on Kurt's head the moment it was taken. Admittedly, they laughed rather hard at that one, even though Kurt complained about his hair being ruined.
After a few minutes of silence (Rowena and Blaine were both too busy laughing madly to type anything), they set off towards the Statue of Liberty. Just like the one before the trip more or less consisted of them staring at their phones and texting.
Once they arrived on Liberty Island, everything was a rush and there were way too many people until they finally found themselves on the top of the Statue of Liberty, looking down at the city and the water, everything looking incredibly tiny from up there.
(15:20)
How is the view?
(15:23)
See for yourself.
(15:25)
Impressive. I'd love to be up there with you right now and see it for myself.
(15:27)
I wish you could be here, too. Tash is off texting Rowena and I just really miss you right now.
(15:29)
I know, I miss you too, baby. Go find her and make her distract you. I want more pictures of you laughing to use as my background.
(15:31)
Sometimes I think you're too sweet for your own good. I think I just saw her. Stay tuned for another photo?
(15:32)
If you smile on that one.
(15:37)
Now, that's better. Are you going to do anything else today?
(15:39)
Why, am I bothering you? I don't have to livetext if it annoys you or you've got something else to do, we can always Skype tonight.
(15:41)
No, don't stop! I was just wondering. And of course we're Skyping tonight.
(15:43)
Are you really just sitting there waiting for my texts? Since you said you've got nothing else to do.
(15:45)
Oh please. I've got lots of important things to do. Right now I'm watching reruns of Project Runway.
(15:47)
While eating ice cream and sulking that you can't be with me in New York right now? Which season?
(15:49)
While eating ice cream and sulking that I can't be with you in New York right now. You still know me too well ;) And 2, I think.
(15:41)
I thought 2 was your least favorite.
(15:43)
I'm replaying all your comments in my head right now, it makes it worthwhile.
(15:45)
Aw honey. I love you so much. Why can't you be here with me?
And thus they continued, their conversation only ever interrupted by Tash and Kurt taking insane amounts of photos before heading back to their apartment. They even livetexted cooking dinner together - accompanied by even more pictures of them - before eating it while watching Funny Girl.
The minute the movie was over Kurt was seated on his bed with his laptop next to him, Skyping with Blaine. It had only been a few days and it was probably a bit insane to miss his boyfriend this much already, but Kurt couldn't help it. He had no idea how he was going to survive a whole year like that. Though university would hopefully keep him busy in the meantime. They kept it relatively short (they had been texting the whole day, after all) so Kurt still had time to call his Dad and Carole before he removed his laptop and his phone from the bed and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
