Thank you for reading, please review and let me know what you think. =)
The week after the Cheerios won the regionals was Kurt’s first week back at school. Being called lame, cripple or halt was quite refreshing after years of being ‘that fag’ for Kurt, even if it took him twice the time to get anywhere in the building than before. He even felt lucky for being dispensed from PE classes for quite a while.
He was sitting in the library looking into the methods of coloring flames when he felt his phone buzzing in his pocket. His face lit up with a smile when he saw an incoming message from Blaine.
From Blaine: How is your first crutchless day? Would have been fun to have breakfast with you again…
From Kurt: Slow but uplifting, literally. Finn felt the urge to lift me up and bring me down the 2 stair steps leading up to the porch… Breakfast would have been amazing, with coffee hmmm… perfect!
From Blaine: Finn again? I’d be happy to take you out for a coffee but I got all the afternoon shifts this week. But I’ll be here next Monday when you come back for checkup, yaaaay!
And that was it a whole week of texting. At one point they started to send each other photos as well, and Kurt often found himself flipping through pictures of Blaine spilling out a bowl of cookie dough, eating muffins, getting soaked in the rain, sunbathing during his lunch break and so on.
Kurt sang a solo in glee club on Friday and as Rachel insisted on recording everything with her phone for future reference he also sent a private vine to Blaine that night. His phone started to buzz right away with an incoming call.
“Kurt that was amazing! Woah! You have to sing something for me!” It took Blaine almost half an hour but he talked Kurt into singing him the song and when he finished Blaine was left speechless.
The next day he called Kurt at the same time to sing to the boy and accompanied himself with his guitar. “Blaine that was incredible!” Kurt said wiping away the few tears he let out while Blaine sang an acoustic version of Teenage Dream. He fell asleep that night thinking about the man who virtually just serenaded him through phone.
The swelling on his foot almost completely disappeared by Monday but the anticipation to see Blaine again grew day by day. He may even have put too much effort to dress up nicely and coif his hear perfectly to a doctor’s appointment, but he felt no shame, though. He wanted to impress Blaine and not have him think that he is just a kid.
As they agreed, Kurt sent a short message to Blaine when he arrived to the hospital and the older man was already standing not far from the entrance by the time he got in. When he saw Kurt approach the door he rushed to greet him.
“Hi!” Blaine said in a deep voice and hugged him while kissing him on the cheek. Kurt needed a moment to get back to his senses after that but he hugged back and smiled at the man in front of him after letting go. Blaine offered his arm and while Kurt didn’t need it he linked his own arm in Blaine’s as the older led him to a free bed, stopping at the nurse’s station to get his files.
“So you are not getting lost and knock everything and everyone down anymore?” Kurt asked with a mock sheepish voice and Blaine bumped their shoulders together.
“Mr. Anderson, try not to harm my patients if not necessary.” Said a doctor Kurt’s never seen before. Blaine stood up straight “Understood, Dr. Plawet.” He said and judging by his expression this was not the doctor who loved Blaine, or people in general. He handed Kurt’s file to the man in white and stood there staring at his feet not daring to risk glance at Kurt or the doctor.
“What are you waiting for? Remove the orthesis so I can examine Mr. Hummel.” At the command Blaine gently removed the walker from Kurt’s foot maybe touching him a little more than necessary, which luckily stayed unnoticed by Dr. Plawet. The way the doctor spoke to Blaine didn’t stay unnoticed by Kurt though. He started to examine Kurt’s ankle, than noticed that Blaine put one of his hands on the boy’s other leg just above his knee. The doctor watched from the corner of his eyes as Kurt put his hand on Blaine’s. He huffed and said something to himself as he started to twist and turn Kurt’s foot in a way that was everything but gentle.
Kurt let out a load moan and Blaine winced knowing exactly what was necessary and what was not necessary during the examination. Not wanting to cause any more trouble for Kurt he didn’t say a word just squeezed the boy’s hand.
“Your ankle is fine. Keep doing the exercises.” He said dryly and turned to Blaine “Find your little boyfriend a brace and sing his papers.” His face told the boys he just barely hold back to spit in their faces, he turned and left without any other word.
“What the hell was that?” Kurt asked watching the doctors back as he was walking away.
“He doesn’t seem to like me.” He said simply.
“You don’t say? But what have you done?”
“Nothing, he was fine until he found out I was gay. I kind of forgot that I’m not in New York anymore, but he made it very clear. I’m sorry he referred to you as my boyfriend and that it caused you pain, literally.”
“I… It’s fine, he’s a jerk.” Blaine allowed himself a shy smile and reluctantly let go of Kurt’s hand. He walked away and came back a few minutes later. He put the brace on Kurt’s foot and helped him with his shoe so gently Kurt was only able to smile in return.
Kurt jumped off of the bed and carefully took a step. It didn’t hurt that much so when Blaine offered his hand he took it and they started to slowly walk towards the exit. Blaine glanced at his watch and stopped.
“Actually I have my lunch break in twelve minutes would you like to stay and have lunch with me? I made cookies. They are not as good as yours but…”
“I would love to, can I wait for you in the garden?” He asked remembering the few benches he saw in the back of the building last time he was here to take Carole home.
“Sure I’ll be there in a few.” Blaine said and squeezed his hand one more time before letting go and rushing to the nurse station. He signed a few papers while the nurse was talking to him seemingly without taking a breath for long minutes and then he disappeared behind a door. Kurt walked out to the garden carefully and sat down on a vacant bench. He busied himself admiring the simple but great look of a pair of matching shoes on his feet.
Blaine arrived in a few minutes just as he promised, with two lunchboxes. “Do you want a sandwich? I packed too many again. It’s tuna with cream-cheese.” He offered seemingly proud of his creations. Kurt took one and braced himself for the strange combination that turned out to be delicious.
“Unusual, but tastes great! Thanks!” He said taking another bite. They sat there eating and talking about their days. Eventually the sandwiches were gone and Blaine took out the cookies, they were also amazing. They talked about music and old TV shows that would be fun to watch again together.
“…and this is why I despise Pokemon.” He finished a really long thought and then paused to look at Kurt in the eye again. “Kurt, I was wondering… do you mind… would you like to go out with me sometime in the near future?”
“Go out?” Kurt asked, not being sure about the intentions of the other man. Maybe I just imagined it. “As in…” He started but Blaine finished instead of him.
“Out as in a date.”
“Yes. I would love to.” He said smiling and trying to calm himself down. Oh God he asked me out! Don’t scream! Don’t scream! Ahhwww…
Blaine’s face lit up as he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in. They agreed on the date, Thursday and as it was time for Blaine to go back to work they stood up. They walked out to the parking lot hand in hand to find Finn impatiently waiting in his car. Blaine let go of Kurt’s hand to hug him and to kiss him on the cheek as it became their little tradition by now.
Kurt got in the car and Blaine watched them drive away when he heard the beeping of his watch. He ran back to the building and finished his shift with a constant dopey smile on his face. A nurse even asked him if he was on prescription drugs.
That night he sent a message to Kurt again.
From Blaine: I can’t wait for Thursday! Good night, Kurt!
From Kurt: I’m looking forward, too. Sleep well, Blaine!
