Thank you for reading! :)
“I can’t believe you’re so lucky.” Mercedes whispered to Kurt during home economics class, after he told her about their date. “When I go to the doctor’s I only get injections and stares from grumpy old nurses.” She said in a mock hurt tone. They quietly laughed at that until the teacher hushed at them.
“Yesterday we kept texting all day. He was with his brother but he live texted everything like I was there. I swear that man would get on so well with Rachel, like birds of a feather flock together.” They laughed at that. “Oh and Rachel came home with Finn in the evening. She suggested we should have a party this weekend for my birthday.”
“That is a good idea, boy!” Mercedes said.
“Yeah it is but dad and Carole will have to leave the town for the weekend. Finn and I tried so hard to convince them to let us have a party anyway but they asked for time to think. I’m just not sure…”
“Okay, class is over! It’s not like any of you actually cares about what I’m saying anyway. Don’t forget to turn in the assignments I handed out.” The teacher said obviously annoyed, but bored as well.
Everyone got up from their seats and Kurt and Mercedes headed together to their lockers.
“Dad invited Blaine over for dinner this Friday.” Kurt said. “I’m already too nervous about it to think straight. I never had a serious-like crush before, to say nothing about having an actual boyfriend. I can only imagine dad interrogating him like in the movies and then shooting him just because.”
“He doesn’t even have a shotgun.” Mercedes said chuckling lightly at Kurt “But Blaine seems like a nice guy. They already met and it’s not like he is some sort of badass motorcycle guy father’s hate. Also Burt is a pretty reasonable parent.”
“True, but I’m still nervous. Thank you though.” Kurt said and hugged Mercedes.
After classes Kurt headed to practice. His foot healed and the cheerleaders’ nationals is in two weeks. They train hard and practice their routine countless times a day. Sue even wanted them to skip their extracurricular classes but the teachers, with Mr. Schuester as their leader, threatened to rise against her publicly and the principal couldn’t have that. So instead she made them practice in the mornings before classes. With all the trainings, choir rehearsals and studying for finals Kurt felt exhausted but also happy because now he could see the light at the end of the tunnel. A few weeks and high school is over, for good.
Practice ended but he stayed back to run a few laps to make up for the weeks he spent not doing anything because of his ankle. It still felt odd sometimes but nothing too hurtful. He took a shower dressed up and took his time coiffing his hair for no one in particular, just for fun.
Heading out to the parking lot he noticed that the school was almost empty, with only a few cleaning ladies left to do their job. In its quiet but not dark yet state the school almost seemed calming. Almost is being the key. Arriving to the parking lot he noticed someone leaning to his car. His heart skipped a beat, because that unknown shape was waiting for him. He quietly walked closer to his car to see the man staring in front of his feet standing there was his boyfriend.
“Blaine?” Kurt asked relieved that it was not a stranger but the fact that Blaine was there without calling him beforehand was unnerving. He didn’t look like he was here to surprise him. Blaine looked up at Kurt and the boy could see immediately that the older was crying for hours before he got here. There was something in his usually sparkly eyes that Kurt couldn’t comprehend. He quickly walked closer and embraced his boyfriend in a tight hug. Blaine melt into it and sobbed into his shirt for long minutes. Having no idea what had happened Kurt just moved his hands up and down on his back and murmured soothingly into his ear.
About an hour later Kurt pulled up on his driveway got out the car and went to the passenger seat to offer his hand to Blaine. Blaine took his hand and let himself be led downstairs to Kurt’s room. In the kitchen Burt and Carole saw them walking hand in hand, Burt opened his mouth to say something, a hello at least, but his wife put a hand on his shoulder and shook her head.
Blaine sat down on the little couch Kurt had in his room, while the younger kneeled in front of him. He just stared into the distance for a while as he did ever since he stopped sobbing. He looked Kurt in the eyes and said “I got fired…”
Kurt gaped not knowing what to say to that. “How? Why?” he asked.
“Remember Dr. Plawet?” Kurt nodded. “He’s been giving me a pretty hard time since he knew I was gay, especially since he thought you were my boyfriend, well you are now, but back then you weren’t. He’s been humiliating me in front of patients and nurses, calling me names and saying I’m doing everything wrong, when I know I’m not.” Kurt felt his insides start to burn up with the information. How could someone act like this, especially a doctor, who should be professional no matter what.
“A girl of 16 came in today and his diagnosis was simple: pregnancy. Even if she insisted that it’s impossible. In the end she admitted that she can’t be pregnant because she’s been in a relationship for a year now, with another girl. He said it’s not his problem anymore and left. I went after him to call him out on this, the girl clearly needs help but he just left her there. He said he’s gonna get another doctor because he is not willing to treat anyone with this life style as it’s already some sick and dirty thing. He also said that since I came here people like me doubled up in number in the hospital and that must be my fault, I’m spreading it. And I lost it.” He said and looked down into his lap. “I started shouting at him telling him that this is not how it works and even if it is they are still people and can’t be left untreated. I told him how unprofessional he is and that he’s basically a disgusting person altogether. He shouted back that I’m out of his team and told me to leave right away. So I left, and walked to your school to wait for you. Sorry if I freaked you out. I just couldn’t face my parents and tell them that my career is over even before it started.”
“Blaine” Kurt said in a low soft voice “I’m so sorry, but you were right and they can’t kick you out of the program because of this.”
“They can’t. But they can for showing disrespect to him and making a scene in the middle of the ward.”
Kurt got up to sit next to him on the couch and pulling him in for a hug. They stayed like that for a while and both of them fall asleep there. Carole came downstairs to announce that dinner was ready and ask Blaine if he wanted to stay. She lightly shook them up and told them to go upstairs, she stayed back with Blaine alone for a few minutes to tell him that she saw what happened in the hospital and that he shouldn’t worry because this really isn’t the way how things work. Blaine was quiet during the meal just listening to Finn trying to convince Burt to let them have a party for Kurt’s birthday. After dinner Kurt drove him back to the hospital because he left his car there earlier the day. When they arrived Kurt stopped the car and turned to Blaine taking a hold of his hands.
“Blaine, I can’t even imagine how you might feel, but you shouldn’t doubt yourself because of this man. He is a jerk and no one cares if he thinks you’re not good enough to be a doctor, or a human for that matter. You know why you chose this profession, and you know you are good at what you’re doing. Everything is going to be okay even if you have to finish your training in another institution.”
“Thank you, Kurt. For everything.” He said hugging the younger tightly. “I can’t tell you how much you being here for me means to me.”
“Anytime. Hey, this is what friends are for. Especially boyfriends.” He said and that earned a light chuckle from Blaine. They shared a few light kisses and Blaine left to walk over to his car and drive home.
