Thank you guys again for reading and the reviews, you are the best!
On Thursday Carole arrived home from work at 1 pm and asked Kurt if he could make some of his special chocolate-trifle the next day, because she invited a guest for dinner. Kurt said yes, too happy to add something to his poor schedule to ask who the guest would be.
As he slept in this morning not willing to even sit up in his bed feeling sorry for himself for the boredom and the fact that he won’t be able to compete on Saturday he spent his whole afternoon doing his home and schoolwork and reading ahead in every subject he had. He even read the rules of a few ball-games he would never even try.
Friday was amazing though. As he promised he made the dessert for the dinner in the morning did some studying and when Carole came home he helped her with the cooking. They were almost done when Carole spoke up “I can finish it in a few minutes, you can go ahead and get ready.” It was still early, two more hours until their guest is due but he went back to his room, took a shower and dressed up. He didn’t put too much effort into it, after all he can always pull the “poor injured little boy” card which he knew with a cute pout would work anytime. Especially on one of Carole’s friends, they were mostly middle aged women with their children already moved away to college or didn’t have kids at all.
He was ready quite quickly so he offered Carole to help some more but when she looked at him her face was… strange… she looked at him up and down and said “Hm, sure. Here” she handed her a pot of cooked potatoes to smash which he took instantly ”I thought with Blaine coming you will spend the last minutes in front of the mirror.”
“What? Blaine is coming?” He asked with readable shock in his voice and on his face. “He is the guest?”
“Did I not tell you? I thought it was obvious.” She said sheepishly.
The boy let out a painful groan, put the pot down and turned around to hurry back into his room. Carole chuckled and rolled her eyes while starting on the potato.
Kurt was still in his tiny bathroom making final touches to perfect his hear when he heard the doorbell. He heard Carole ask Finn to open the door so he took a deep breath and a last look in the mirror. With a smile he acknowledged that even after such a short notice he was able to make himself look impeccable yet casual enough not to look overdressed to a dinner at his own home.
He made his way out to the hall he saw Carole was occupied in the kitchen putting a small bouquet obviously from Blaine into a vase. He turned around to see Blaine sitting on the sofa with Finn watching the TV. They kept awkwardly glancing at each other as there were only ads going on.
“So you work with my mum? I thought you were Kurt’s boyfriend or something…” Finn said looking down at Blaine who was already smaller than him even while sitting but after this he just shrank a few more inches and turned bright red not saying anything. Kurt couldn’t believe his step-brother would be so blunt. After he gained back the ability to breathe normally again he stepped into the sitting-room to welcome Blaine and acted like he didn’t hear the question. He approached the couch from behind.
“Hi.” He said with a small smile.
Blaine turned to look at him and just gaped for a few seconds. “H-hi Kurt.” He said with the awkward smile Kurt hadn’t seen in days.
“Finn, come here and help me lay the table please.” Came Carole’s voice from the door. Finn made a questioning look as he didn’t have to help lay the table for a long time now. His mother gave him a strong look and he immediately stood up and hurried out of the room. “Dinner is ready in about ten minutes, boys.” She smiled at them and left.
Kurt moved next to the couch, put down the crutches and was about to sit down, when Blaine offered a helping hand which he took with a smile even though he wasn’t really in a need of it. He hold his hand just a little longer than necessary which Kurt didn’t even realize until he let go. Blaine leaned in and, as their little tradition by now, pecked him on the cheek. “Hi.” He said again this time in a lower voice and the sound made Kurt’s mind do his signature twisted backflips, which put him in this position in the first place, and he just couldn’t help but smile thinking about it.
“Hi” He said not breaking the eye-contact “How was your day?”
“Refreshing, after the last few days at the hospital. Today’s rush was just what I needed.” Unintentionally he moved a little closer to Kurt but neither of them seemed to notice or mind at all. “How about yours?”
“Exciting” he said in a sarcastic voice which made Blaine chuckle a bit “but not that bad. Not as fun either, though, without coffee-company in the morning” he smiled again and added “…or coffee at all hanks to Finn. I still have no idea what he is using it for…” He rolled his eyes with a smile and moved a little closer to Blaine.
At this point their knees were touching and they were just smiling at each other lost in the other’s eyes. Just to be true to himself Finn choose this exact moment to declare that dinner is ready. Blaine stood up immediately and offered his hand to Kurt again. They walked slowly to the kitchen and took their seats. Well Kurt was doddering and Blaine was nice enough to walk with him.
Dinner went well eating the delicious supper Carole put together and sipping on the wine Blaine brought. The four of them were talking animatedly and even though his step-mother and their guest had a few inside jokes from work, which none of the younger boys could get, Kurt enjoyed the look of Blaine’s face cracking up with laughter and the sound of his laughter… But somehow it made him start thinking about Blaine being older than him. He was working with Carole after all and well, yes, five years is five years. It not that much though but Blaine is an adult now with adult problems paying checks, saving life and stuff like that.
They learned that Blaine had to work with Carole since he started working in the hospital earlier this week. She had a grumpy old patient who kept telling Blaine off for everything starting from his hippy hair (which was really hurtful considering Blaine kept his crazy curls under control), through his voice, way of work to him having a too nice handwriting for a man. Above all he was one of the most homophobic man Blaine had ever met. Even though he didn't know about the boy being gay, he kept on making hurful comments of gay people, and Blaine had to listen to him for hours every day, smiling even though the patient called him Glitter-poodle. This is why when the man was transferred to another unit Carole asked Blaine to join them for dinner. She didn't tell any of them that she wanted to set them up secretely...
Kurt totally zoned out, the next thing he heard is Finn talking about a road trip he is going to with Puck for the next two days. “Wait, what? You promised to take me to the championship.”
“Yea, man sorry ‘bout that but…” Even with Finn being twice the size of Kurt he was somehow still afraid of what could come out of the little boy. Kurt had a really loud and strong voice to his body not to mention the way he was able to use it to tell anyone down in a few words.
“You were the one to offer it in the first play!”
“I know, and I’m sorry, but I’m spending the next weekend with Rachel and his dads and she doesn’t like the idea of me going to see Quinn and Santana and… and I just thought that you wouldn’t mind…”
“I do mind Finn” Kurt was beyond furious by now but he had to keep himself together in front of Blaine, he probably already thinks he is just a little kid throwing a tantrum. “But you know what? Go! I don’t need your help anyway, I’m going alone!”
Awkward silence at the table but not the good type this time. “Okay, we’ll talk about this later. Is everyone ready for dessert?” Carole asked and all the three men at the table answered “Yes!”
“Okay than go to the sitting-room and I’ll be right there.” She smiled and everyone stood up. Finn hurried to the couch and sat down, in a little slower pace followed Kurt who sat down on the other side of the couch and as his hand was in Blaine’s as usual he pulled him down to sit next to him. Carole came in carrying a tray, he gave each boy a plate of chocolate-trifle. Only now did Kurt and Blaine let go of each other’s hands.
Carole sat down opposite to them and smiled because Blaine crammed in-between Finn and Kurt made him look even smaller and younger than any of them.
They started talking again this time Kurt not addressing Finn directly through the conversation until Carole excused herself to the kitchen to clean up. Kurt and Blaine immediately offered help, but she commanded Finn instead who made a miserable face and followed her to the kitchen not missing Kurt’s satisfied smirk.
The other two didn’t move even now that they had space to wit without their thighs touching. Blaine seemed thoughtful for a minute and Kurt didn’t want to invade but then Blaine turned to face him and he was so close, and those eyes, and that scent and… oh God, you have to stop!
“Kurt” he started slowly watching his face for any sort of signs that what he was going to say is wrong “I… I want to take you to the cheering competition tomorrow.” Kurt’s eyes slowly grew wider and Blaine both of them were nearly in shock. Blaine because he was afraid of overstepping and being rejected and Kurt because… well, you know.
“I mean he started already making up a cover speech for his stupid question, how he even thought that Kurt might want him to take him, this strange guy to a place where he would be seen with him in public and people might think that…
“Yes” Kurt said stopping Blaine in his inside rambling. It was Blaine’s turn to widen his eyes “Yes, Blaine I’d like to go to the championship with you.” Now both of them were beaming at each other.
They continued to talk for a while with Finn and Carole joining back in and then it was getting too late and Blaine had to leave. He shook hands with Finn, got a bone-crashing hug from Carole and he was standing in front of Kurt not really sure about what he should do now that both Finn and Carole were looking at them. Kurt smiled knowing what is going on in his mind and leant slightly down to give him a peck on the cheek just the way Blaine does it to him. They were both blushing and smiling and Finn snorted and rolled his eyes at the sight earning a little punch on the shoulder from his mother. Blaine thanked again for the dinner and left letting out the huge smile he was keeping in when he turned away from them.
