Chapter 4.
After Kurt had gone to check on his dad, the first thing he did when he arrived home was look at the clock. He still had two more hours to kill before he could text Blaine. Of course he could text him now but he didn’t want to get him in even more trouble with Sandra and then he’d still have to wait for Blaine to reply, which he thought was actually even worse.
Instead, he called Santana. “Well hello sweet peas.” Her voice came through the speakers. He hated the way she gave him nicknames, fortunately it was only something she did over the phone and because she knew how much he hated it. “Hey San, how’re you feeling?”
“Just peachy.” Santana replied, her voice as light as a breeze but Kurt could hear the underlying tone in it.
“You sure?” he asked quietly. There was a silence on the other end and then a sigh and Santana, who usually wanted to talk about anything said, “I don’t want to talk about it.”, so he changed the subject. “Has your mum mentioned anything about tomorrow?”
On Sundays, Mrs. Lopez liked to invite Kurt over for dinner. It was both Santana’s and Kurt’s least favourite moment of the week. “No, so let’s hope she doesn’t.” She chuckled, “though about that Kurt...you know we’ve been together,” her voice changing lightly when she said the word ‘together’, “for almost a year. People are starting to wonder if...-“
“If what?” he panicked slightly, were people figuring them out?
“Well, you know...”
“No?”
She sighed in annoyance as if she couldn’t believe he didn’t get it. “if we, you know...-shit my mum! Kurt I have to go! If she hears I’m on the phone with you, she’ll definitely invite you.” He laughed as she hung up, still wondering what it was she was trying to say. However, all thoughts about that were forgotten the moment he checked the time again. Staring at the clock in frustration, he sighed annoyed. Why does time never move fast when you need it to? He stared at his ceiling, hoping time would pass faster.
* * *
Blaine checked his phone again. Still nothing. He was starting to feel like maybe Kurt hadn’t want him to have his number after all. “Thank you Blaine, you can go now.” Sandra said and he walked off counting his tips of the day. His heart skipped a beat as his phone buzzed, his hands fumbled with his phone so nervously that he nearly dropped it. “Now you have mine too. ;) Kurt”, it was a simple message but it made his heart pound. Kurt had sent it, with his phone. He had Kurt’s number.
Kurt let out a breath he hadn’t even known he’d been holding as he got a reply. “I was starting to think maybe you’d forgotten.”
He bit his lip as he thought, I could never forget you, and replied, “I waited for your shift to end. Didn’t want to get you in even more trouble.” Kurt clutched his phone to his chest as a feeling of excitement mixed with adrenaline rushed through his veins. His whole heart seemed to be on fire. His mind only thought about one pair of eyes and the bouncy bush of curls that framed Blaine’s face. He felt special knowing the Blaine without gel, too, considering at school his hair was always controlled by a withstanding amount of hair gel.
He gasped hearing his phone’s ringtone. Caller ID “Blaine”. He had no idea what to do, panicked for a few seconds and took in a deep breath before he picked up. He tried to ignore the tingling feeling in his body. “Thanks for that, I’m not sure Sandra would’ve allowed anymore mistakes.”
“I think you need to use more of your charms, Blaine. I’m sure you’ve got some.” Kurt said, trying to sound casual, but he felt his own voice slightly tremble.
“Or I could just tell her it’s all your fault. She’s fond of you anyway.”
“My fault?” Kurt said surprised and felt himself go red in the face when he remembered what Sandra had told him.
“Yup.” Blaine confirmed and then changed the topic, “why I was calling you for, though... I was wondering if maybe you would want to do a song with me this week at Glee?” Kurt wasn’t sure but he thought he heard Blaine’s voice change a bit, as if he felt bare asking it.
“With you? But Blaine, you’re amazing! I don’t think I can even compare.” Kurt said, and he couldn’t help but feel even a bit jealous. He was serious when he said it too, when Blaine had performed for the Glee club the first time on Friday, all he’d done was stare. Blaine had blown his mind away, his voice had touched him.
“Psht! What a load of crap. Kurt! You’re an amazing singer. You took my breath away on Monday and on Friday. The way you seemed to be telling a story. You...I can’t even begin to explain it. I couldn’t keep my eyes off you.” If Kurt hadn’t been blushing before, he sure was now.
“Thank you.” Was about all he managed to say.
“So, is that a yes?” Kurt thought he could hear Blaine smile.
“I’ll think about it”, and before he could stop himself, he added, “maybe we could discuss it over coffee tomorrow? I still owe you one.”
“That’s a deal! Is it okay if I text you tomorrow about a time though? I need to help my mum with something in the morning.” Blaine asked.
“Sure! But don’t forget about me.” Kurt slapped his forehead the moment the words were out of his mouth and realized how stupid he must’ve sounded, cursing himself inwardly.
“As if I could ever forget you.” Blaine said and Kurt felt his abdomen contract, “Night Kurt.”
“Night Blaine.”
Kurt let himself fall down on the bed, a smile plastered on his face. His phone clutched to his chest, feeling his heartbeat through the material of his clothes.
When Blaine hung up, he felt like he was on cloud nine, he felt like nothing could touch him, he felt like the happiest person alive right now and wished it were tomorrow already. He had a date with Kurt! At least he thought it was a date, neither of them had really used the word, but he liked Kurt and he was almost sure Kurt liked him too, so it must be a date, right?
**
Kurt ran his fingers over the different pieces of fabric, he’d changed his mind on what he was going to wear over and over again. He had no idea why he was being so nervous. It was just Blaine and they saw each other almost every day at school but he couldn’t help it. He sighed in frustration and checked his phone again - still nothing - then went back to pondering over his wardrobe choice. When his phone finally rang his hands were trembling as he grabbed it. His disappointment was big when he saw that it wasn’t Blaine but Santana. “Mum just asked if you were coming tonight? X”. He bit his lip, he still hadn’t heard anything from Blaine. And no matter how much they both hated it, Sunday dinners at the Lopez house were actually nice, if you took out the faking a relationship part. It was filled with great food, drinks and lovely chatter and usually even some dancing. But it also meant for Kurt and Santana to step up their pretence and it both made them like Sunday dinner a whole lot less.
He texted Santana back saying he was already doing something else and decided to stop rummaging through his clothes, the ones he was wearing right now would just have to do. He didn’t want to work himself up even more, just over clothes. It’s just Blaine, he kept telling himself. He closed his wardrobe the same time he got a reply. He opened Santana’s text. “Where you going?” and as he was reading it, his phone buzzed again. He ignored Santana’s question and quickly opened the new message. “Are you alright with meeting in an hour?”“Sure! Meet up outside?”
“Perfect!"
