It's their third date, and Chandler's already memorized his coffee order - down to the blueberry muffin and the lack of whipped cream on his grande mocha. Kurt's not surprised - he's sure Chandler probably remembers the smallest of details Kurt's given him, because he pays attention and worships the ground Kurt walks on. And not for the first time, Kurt felt a little twinge in the pit of his stomach, a slight tightening of his throat.
It's not that he doesn't like Chandler, he argued with himself. The boy is sweet, dotes on him, and would never do him wrong. And Kurt likes feeling wanted. After years of chasing after boys to no avail, it's nice to have someone chase him. The day they'd met, Chandler had asked for his number almost straight away, and Kurt had given it to him - because they'd hit it off during a long discussion about the recent revival of Evita! on Broadway, because Chandler had mentioned Lady Gaga and Kurt had responded enthusiastically, because they shared interests and the other boy was very, very kind. He could have easily turned Kurt in as a trespasser - true, North Lima High didn't have a strict dress code, but it would have been easy enough - but he hadn't. He'd struck up a conversation, and then eventually snuck Kurt out past the terrifying looking security guard.
"Sweetie?" Kurt blinked, looking up to see Chandler waving at him from the long line in front of the cashier. The Lima Bean housed no gourmet blends, but it was good enough for most of the customers - the coffee was rich, the pastries were exquisite and the employees were friendly. Kurt raised an eyebrow and stood from his seat, slinging his messenger bag over his shoulder. Chandler loved nicknames, and while it was objectively adorable, something turned over in Kurt's stomach at the sound of the saccharine name.
"I really need to, um, take care of business." Chandler raised a pinky finger and winked, and Kurt chuckled softly. "So take my place in line? You know my order, right?" Kurt hesitated, and Chandler smiled fondly at him before rattling it off. "I'll be back soon! And today's coffee is on me, so I'll pay you back!" Before he could react, Chandler had leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. Kurt's eyes widened, and he watched dumbly as his boyfriend - because they were boyfriends now, weren't they? - wave and scamper towards the bathroom.
There was still a small gap in the line, and Kurt hurriedly stepped into it, eliciting a surprised sound from the person behind him. Kurt turned, a small scowl on his face as he prepared his argument for 'cutting', only to be met by a pair of honey-hazel eyes.
The other boy blinked, his mouth falling open a little - Kurt guessed he'd been about to scold him for stepping into the line - but hurriedly brought his jaw back up. "Hi, um, I just..." He gestured towards Kurt helplessly.
"I was just taking over my boyfriend's place, I'm not technically cutting," Kurt finally spoke, licking his lips subconsciously. The other boy - he was short, but with beautiful dark hair and almost painfully expressive eyebrows - threw back his head in a laugh.
"It's fine! I figured. I just wanted to tell you that your bag's open." Kurt glanced down quickly and let out a squeak of distress. "The zipper must be broken," he grumbled, trying valiantly to close the main pocket of the bag. "I'll have to fix it when I get home. But thank you, um...?" He trailed off in silence, widening his eyes at the shorter boy.
Mr. Pretty Eyes smiled. "My name's Blaine," he spoke pleasantly, sticking out a hand for Kurt to take - one that he did take, feeling a swoop in his stomach at the warmth and width of Blaine's hand. Kurt shook his hand firmly, an unconscious smile playing across his face.
"Kurt."
