I haven't heard from you in a while. How are you doing out there?
Oh crap. I forgot to reply back to his message from earlier. Great job, Hummel.
Kurt rushed to Blaine's ask box.
Oh my god. I'm horrible! Let me make it up to you with the story of my 'so-awesome' day! Message me back when you can. Sorry, sorry, sorry! AHHH! SORRY!
Send. Within a few minutes, he had a message from Blaine.
I hope you know I'm expecting something to the caliber of that children's book: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!
Kurt smirked. His mother had read that book to him when he was young, and though he couldn't have empathized with the kid then, he certainly did now. Especially about the part about falling asleep with gum in his mouth...that never turned out pretty. Kurt went back to Blaine's blog.
Oh it is. But this could become a novella so I advise you either be prepared for an onslaught of messages or you give me some other way to get in touch with you without having your dashboard explode from 'Kurt Hummel' syndrome.
Send. Another few moments pass and soon enough, a message.
Hummel. Kurt Hummel. Kurt...Hummel. Hummel, Kurt. Kurt. Hummel....
OH CRAP. YOU GAVE OUT YOUR LAST NAME TO HIM YOU DUNCE. YOU NIT WIT. YOU IDGIT. YOU NINYPANTS. YOU...OH WHAT IS THAT PHRASE...YOU COTTON HEADED NINNY MIFFINS. NO THAT'S NOT IT. OH YOU DUNCE. YOU NIT WIT.
You caught me in my act of stupidity. That is, indeed, my name. I'd like to try and keep my full name confidential for at least another week before I accidentally reveal that as well.
How is someone so stupid to just throw their last name out there; you like him yet you barely know him yet you think you trust him. You have a whole lot of shit on your plate, Hummel. Oh there you go again, subconsciously saying it again. God I gotta stop talking to myself
Not even a minute passes before a message appears. Blaine was being awfully speedy tonight.
I can't get over how perfect that just rolls off of my tongue. I bet with your middle name, it sounds even more elegant and adorable. Well I won't leave you hanging there alone: Anderson. Blaine Anderson.
"Blaine...Anderson. Blaine Anderson. Anderson. An-der-son. AN-dur-SAWN. Bee-lie-knee. An-deer-sown." Kurt repeated Blaine every which possible way he could. The name just fit so perfectly to him it almost made him weep. Not only does he have the looks, but he has—oddly enough—the name.
I'd have to say, your name is quite the tongue-roller too. I can't stop saying it. It just sounds so...perfect! Ah, I hope that doesn't make me sound like a dope. Just tell me when you're going to leave me and never talk to me again from how weird I am and I will completely understand, don't worry.
And this time setting almost a land-speed record, Kurt hit the send button and barely had enough time to get a water from the fridge before Blaine's response was sitting in his ask. Actually responses.
Is he like...incredibly bored tonight that all he wants to do is refresh his page every second until he sees I've replied?!
The first response read:
Oh Kurt, that's far too impossible. And here's my number. Text me anytime you'd like :)
And predictably, the second was a simple message composed of ten-digits. Blaine's number. Kurt added it to his contacts immediately and gave him a quick, test-message.
If this is Blaine Anderson, prove that you know who this is
And moments later a response:
My god, if he's a fast person to reply to messages on then he is a world-record holder for texting
The person that is texting me accidentally gave out his name to a face he's barely known—a cute face, I might add ;)
And so for the next three hours, Kurt neglected all things that weren't his conversation with Blaine as the two of them talked about Kurt's hell-of-a-day. Blaine occasionally asked questions for clarification, but for the most part, it was just Kurt venting off his frustration of the day. He probably would have been more of a wreck, had it not been for his talk with Sam earlier. By the end of it, he was feeling like his old, confident self-again. Blaine consistently reassured him and maintained how Rachel sounded like the most awful human being in existence—even beating out Sebastian.
That is—temporarily.
***
The next day, after texting Blaine until early in the morning, Kurt was slow to get out of bed and start his morning routine. He barely managed to make it down the stairs and turn to Carole before she knew. There was a lot of things teenagers could do—and maybe a lot could do this to their moms—but there was one thing no one at the Hummel/Hudson residence could deny: when Carole knew about something, she magically seemed to understand everything. And that means everything.
"My, someone looks like quite the ball of energy this morning," Carole said to Kurt quite sarcastically.
Kurt was too tired to chuckle. He just moved his lips enough to acknowledge Carole's comment.
"Wh—where's Finn and Burt?" Kurt said, barely mustering enough strength to even say the few syllables without falling over into a state of comatose.
"Your father had to leave early to go to work because apparently there are quite the number of check-ups today at the shop; Finn had to leave early to go get Math help before his big test Friday."
Kurt knew what that meant. He and Finn had Math together, which Carole knew; Carole also knew that Kurt possessed the least amount of patience in the world to ever tutor his dim witted step-brother. So Finn always went in early sometime during the school week to 'get help' on his assignments, which was code for he and Rachel did it in the school auditorium or choir room before the hallways got busy. But that's a story which will be brought to light a little on down the road.
"Ahh I see..." Kurt said, trying to grasp the Orange Juice from the refrigerator.
"Do you honey? You barely look like you can spell your own name, let alone tell me why you were up until two in the morning last night?" Carole said.
Kurt's tired state was still in control, but he was showing a bit more of a guilty perk in the conversation now that he had been caught.
"How did...you..."
"Honey, I want you to never forget this. I am a mother—just because I'm not your biological one doesn't neglect the fact that I am still a mother and consider you one of my own. And when you're a mother and you care deeply for someone, you somehow possess this maternal quality that gives you sonar for those people and you just get those people. You get their actions, their feelings, their reactions to subjects. And by the looks of it, I'd get that you were texting or messaging or 'whatever you kids do-ing' a certain someone, so spill! And you better be quick because school starts in thirty minutes and you are not being late."
And Kurt, with as much energy as possible, tried to explain the story of how he'd followed Blaine forever on Tumblr and how he messaged him saying he was cute and all of the events that lead to the coffee. He was even bold enough to tell Carole about him being brave and kissing Blaine. Carole perked up when she heard he had gotten his first kiss—Carole loved Kurt and hated to see him down. After Kurt said all that he could coherently, he was about to fall over.
"Well okay, I'll make a one-time deal with you. But you have to uphold your end of the bargain, okay mister?"
Kurt nodded slowly, trying to wake himself-up .
"If you can promise me that you'll be careful with this—that you won't let this get out of hand; if you promise me that you won't stay up until the wee hours of the morning, texting anyone—Blaine, Rachel, Mr. Shuester, the President, even Barbara..."
Kurt suddenly shot up. "Okay but Barbara!..."
"EVEN BARBARA," Carole continued, cutting Kurt off. "If you can promise me that, then I'll pretend someone got a bad case of food poisoning last night."
Kurt looked confused for a moment.
"Oh god, honey, I'm saying you can stay home 'sick' today. Man, you really are that tired. Almost too tired...when did you actually go to bed, Mr. Hummel?"
"Would you be surprised/angered if I were to tell you for only fifteen minutes?"
"FIFTEEN MINUTES. KURT HUMMEL, GET YOUR BUTT BACK UP THOSE STAIRS AND IN BED AND NEVER DO THAT AGAIN ON A SCHOOL NIGHT!" Carole yelled, before slapping his butt with the morning paper.
Kurt unhurriedly made his way up the steps to his room before collapsing on his bed. He stripped down into his boxers and climbed under the covers. He grabbed his phone which was sitting on the nightstand next to his bed and looked at the last of his messages between himself and Blaine.
Well it's six in the morning. We have managed to stay up for the entirety of the night and I MUST get some sleep now. I can assure you that no boggy monsters are going to get you—it has been quite the pleasure, Mr. Anderson.
The pleasure is all mine, Mr. Hummel. Just remember to keep your head up. Don't let people boss you around or make you feel bad. You can control all of that. You have the strength. You can do it, I know it. Also, if people get too annoying, just look at those pictures from last night. That should do the trick ;)
Would you like to sum that up to me a little more concisely? And oh, but I will.
Courage
And Kurt was out. He'd apply everything tomorrow but for today—all he needed was a nice, long sleep.
