CHAPTER 9
The first one to come out of the trance was Kurt. "Sorry for not coming before. I had some stuff to do."
Blaine shook his head trying to focus on his words "Oh yes, don't worry." He said with a small smile.
"How are you Blaine?" Kurt said with a worried face. Blaine looked so tired.
"I'm fine, Kurt. How are you?" Blaine said trying to force a smile but failing miserably.
"Don't lie to me Blaine. I am trying to help you out here but if YOU don't help ME I just won't be able to help."
Blaine sighed "I just couldn't sleep last night. I was so worried about Evelyn, my sister. Another one of her friends got taken away and when she asked another kid when she was coming back the kid, that is older than her and obviously more observant, told her that never, that when they took someone to the tower they never came back. And he's right. They never come back, but she was just so sad and scared. She asked me if we were going to be taken to the tower and if we were ever getting out of there. I don't know what to do anymore Kurt." Blaine whispered the last sentence and Kurt felt more convinced than ever to get them out of there.
"I'm getting there Blaine. I came here late because I went to the front of the field. I went to check the security and everything and it's pretty complicated but I promise I will find a way to get you out of here. Do you know how much time I have?"
"You went where?!" Blaine asked shocked and scared. "You went to the front of the field just for us? No! Kurt! You can't do that! It's too dangerous. If they see you we are totally screwed. They would tell your dad and you would have to explain and my sister and I would be the next targets." He was rambling and he knew it but he was just so scared.
"Blaine. Blaine! Stop! Nobody saw me. I was careful. I hid behind some trees and just observed. You need to calm down; everything is and will be fine. I swear."
Blaine visibly relaxed and gave in. "Okay, what did you see?"
"Not much," Kurt relaxed too because at least Blaine was letting him talk. "I went to the front and there is this huge gate and at the top there was this stupid sign that these bastards decided to put." Kurt ended angrily.
"A sign? At the front? I'm sorry but I don't remember. My sister was trembling from cold and fright so I just hold her and closed my eyes and only opened them when they rushed us inside the main house where they were going to register us."
"Yeah, there's a sign at the top of the gate that says 'Work Makes You Free'. They probably put it there so everyone that came in here thought that if they worked hard enough they would be let free, but we all know that it isn't true." Kurt said sadly.
"No, it isn't true. At all. But the people desperate enough are capable of believing and trying anything and everything. But I won't spend the rest of my energy working my body out just to be killed at the end. I am trying to take care of Evelyn and trying to get her out. "
"I am doing my best to help you. Do you have any idea of how much time I have? How do they choose whose next to go to the tower?"
"Everyone has a number in their uniforms."
"Okay. You have number 24608 and your sister?"
"She has 24610." Blaine said quietly.
"Okay. In which number are they?"
"23500." Blaine said sadly and with a hint of desperation in his voice.
Well shit. Kurt had less time to do this that he thought he would have. He had to be fast.
