CHAPTER 24
Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. First Blaine was being asked to step forward so Mr. Schindler could take him and his family to a safer place and then suddenly he was standing there petrified and in shock while he watched his little sister struggle to free herself from a multitude of people that were walking to their death. He couldn't do anything. He was frozen. His feet didn't seem to work. And then a shout of "NO!" resounded through the camp. He turned his head and he saw him, Kurt, running as fast as he could towards the entrance of the camp. His cheeks were flushed and a few tears were rolling down that beautiful face.
Once he arrived at the gates he started shouting orders, he tried to get past the security but the soldiers wouldn't let him.
"Let me in! Move away! Stop those people! Let that little girl out!" He was rushing through his words and the soldiers looked amused by his attempts at getting inside and giving them orders.
"And who are you to try and give us orders..." The man looked at Kurt and then he threw him a disgusted look. "Sir...?"
Oh there it was. Just because Kurt was very well dressed they had made assumptions and now they were harassing him. But Kurt was not letting their words distract him from his goal.
"For your information I am Kurt Hitler... sir? And seeing as I am the son of the owner of these camps..." Kurt remarked the word 'camps' with a disgusted tone and look. "I have every right to go in without any of your permission. So excuse me."
He pushed away the guards and took off running again. He entered the "tower" and pushed through the multitude of people towards Evelyn.
The moment Evelyn spotted Kurt she jumped up and down. "Mr. Kurt! Mr. Kurt! I'm here! Please help me!"
Kurt kept pushing through the naked men and women but he just couldn't seem to get to the little girl. All the people walking towards the chambers were freaking out and terrified and trying to save their lives. They knew nothing good could come out of them going into the chambers. The little girl only seemed to get further and further, while the people were walking they were pushing her and she was too small to push back. But Blaine could see the determination in Kurt's expression, he was not letting Evelyn go.

They were all inside now, including Evelyn. Kurt knew he had to do something. He was not letting Evelyn die. He ran to the doors and stopped the men that were trying to get it closed.
"Stop! Now!"
All three of them laughed. "And who are you to tell us what to do princess? Who let you in anyways?" They snickered.
"My father, for your information, is Adolf Hitler and I am Kurt Hitler. So I can come in any time I want and I can give orders when I please. So let that little girl out of there. NOW."
Two of the men pushed through the people shouting and telling them to move aside. When they got to the girl she was trembling and crying, her sobs were heartbreaking. They pushed Evelyn harshly to the doors and the moment she caught sight of Kurt she took of running towards him. He knelt down on the ground and Evelyn ran into his arms. He lifted her and took her to the center of the space in which Oskar, Blaine and his parents were standing, all looking shaken. The girl was nuzzling Kurt's neck tenderly and he could feel her little sobs in puffs of breath near his jaw. He placed Evelyn in her mother's arms while the woman sobbed. She held her daughter tightly against her chest whispering sweet nothings into her hair.
Kurt glanced at Oskar and Oskar nodded towards the little girl. They both neared the sobbing girl and Oskar tapped her shoulder. And Kurt spoke to the girl softly when she lifted her head to look at him.
"Sweetie, we need you to tell us how you got stuck between all those people?"
She sniffled a bit and wiped her tears with her little hand. "They were taking her. I wanted to save her. She's my best friend."
Kurt had no idea who was 'her' but he did know that Evelyn was in trouble.
Oskar turned toward the men. "Officer, we should be going as of now, now that the little girl is here." Schindler tried. Kurt knew, but it was fruitless.
"The girl can't leave these grounds anymore. She broke the rules, she went into the showering line when it still wasn't her time and now she has to affront the consequences." One of the men said coldly.
Blaine's mother was sobbing uncontrollably in her daughter's hair.
The man took the girl from her mother's arms. "NO. NO. Leave her alone! Let her go and leave me here instead!"
"No. We can't do that. She's staying here for at least a couple of weeks more."
Kurt turned to Schindler, to see if he could do something but Oskar just shook his head, they would have to go without Evelyn.
Kurt walked towards an astounded Blaine. "Blaine, we are going to have to go without her."
By the time these words were getting out of his mouth Blaine was already shaking his head no.
"No. I won't leave without her. She has to either come with us or I'm staying here."
"Blaine. Listen to me." Kurt tried but Blaine was still shaking his head and standing his ground. Kurt took his face in his hands and made him look him in the eyes. "We have to go without her. She had to stay here for a couple of weeks. If you stay... the chances of you getting out again are slim. She, being a little kid, is going to get out of here easily. Oskar will make sure of it. She'll be back home in no time. But for now, you all have to go home without her."
Blaine was shaking and tears were welling up in his beautiful eyes but he was, now, nodding.
"Yeah. Yeah, okay."
Kurt let out a sigh of relief. Blaine was going home and so were his parents. And Evelyn would be home in a few weeks time.
Oskar signed the papers and then it was time to say goodbye to the little, crying girl.
Blaine's parents hugged her tightly and whispered their love into her ear.
Blaine walked towards her and kneeled in front of her. She immediately threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
"Blainey." She whispered into her brother's neck and the scene before him made Kurt's heart break.
"Shh sweetie. We'll be back for you. I promise. You'll be home with us in no time. We'll be together again very soon. Okay?"
The girl wiped her nose with her sleeve and nodded.
"Promise?"
"I promise." And then they were hugging again.
This, somehow, felt like a definite goodbye, and Kurt didn't like that.
After that they made their way to the front gates and all through the woods. Blaine was silently crying, Kurt took his hand and squeezed it and whispered in his ear "She'll be home soon. I promise. Don't worry."
"Soon." Blaine had whispered back.
And what broke Kurt's heart the most, was that he was not even sure he could keep that promise.
And with that realization Kurt let a lone tear fall.
