CHAPTER 18
Blaine knew something was off with Kurt. He had never acted this weird with him before. Kurt was hiding something from him and he wanted to know. But he wasn't about to pressure Kurt into telling him all about his life only because he had trusted Kurt with his.
Still... even if Kurt was reserved Blaine was so happy he had met him. He was so lucky that it was Kurt who had found him. It could have been anyone else. But no, it had been Kurt. It had to be fate. Okay, he knew he should not think like that, he shouldn't believe in fate, his religion forbids him to think like that, but he did. He had never been fond of his religion. And to be honest his parents hadn't either. But as hard as he tried to convince his parents to leave the religion and live like normal people, obviously his parents were too proud to do something like that. They couldn't do that. What would that look like to other people? Their parents and the parents of their parents and everyone before them were Jews. They could not break the chain.
Blaine bitterly laughed. His parents had been too worried by appearance to do something that could make them comfortable. And now this stupid thing got them in trouble. If they had abandoned the religion and went to live somewhere else, far away from all the Jews, maybe they had been safe. But no, right now they were stuck in a concentration camp, working to death. They had been really lucky to have Kurt helping them. And now they are getting out of this horrible place. And they are going to live a normal life from now on. He is not going to allow his parents to keep the tradition. He is leaving the religion as soon as he gets out of here. He is going to be an independent, religion-free young man. And he is getting his sister out too. If his parents want to keep their beliefs then fine, but he is not going to allow his sister to go down again if something happens.
He needs to talk to Kurt about this. He doesn't want to work for Schindler. He does not want to be a Jew anymore. He doesn't want to be in any kind of religion. He wants to be a... what do they call them again? Atheist? Yeah! He wants to be an atheist. He doesn't want to be Jew, but he doesn't wants to be catholic or anything either.
So he just has to stand be in this hell hole one or two more days and then he will be out. He will be free.

You could say Kurt was scared of meeting with Quinn. He hadn't seen her in weeks. He had even forgotten about her, about the engagement. He was supposed to buy an engagement ring for the girl that was waiting for him somewhere in this house. But he had to face her.
He walked through the hallway and he found himself on the living room. And there she was, sitting on the couch. She looked beautiful as always. Her blond hair was pulled up in a tight hair bun; she was wearing a pretty yellow dress and her coat was carefully placed on the armchair.
He stood in the doorway for a moment but then decided to join her on the couch. He sat beside her and looked at the fireplace in front of them, just like she was doing. Silence reigned between them and Kurt didn't like it. They had never been silent when they were in each other's company. So he decided to break it.
"Hey Quinn." He said quietly, as if afraid he would talk too loud and scare her.
"Hello." That was all she gave back in response. That was odd coming from her. She was always this bright, happy girl and now she just sounded gloomy.
Kurt frowned. "I didn't know you were coming..."
When Quinn didn't answer, he got even more worried. "Quinn, is something wrong? Are you okay? What's going on?" He moved closer towards her and rested his hand on her back and started rubbing in a comforting way.
She shrugged his hand off and stood up.
"Quinn?"
"Where have you been Kurt?" She asked directly and her voice was distant and cold but angry at the same time and it took Kurt completely off guard.
"Excuse me?"
"Well... I've been trying to get in touch with you since I came back from my trip and I hadn't been able to get you. And I arrived 3 days ago. I called the house and they told me that you were out. Every single time I tried to reach you, you were out. Where the hell have you been?! You can't just disappear like that Kurt!"
Quinn was clearly very angry. Her eyes were wide and she was gesturing a lot with her hands and she was breathing heavily now that she had finished what she felt like saying.
"Quinn, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to worry you or anything. I just... I've been busy. "
Quinn raised her eyebrows.
"Busy? Busy with what? School? Don't tell me that because I know it's not with college. I know you very well and I can see it in your face that you weren't 'busy' with school! So don't give me that shit of an excuse!"
Kurt knew he had to tell Quinn about Blaine sooner or later. He had hoped it would be later rather than sooner but the circumstances were different now and Quinn was right here right now demanding answers.
"Quinn. I will tell you everything. But not here, there are too many people coming in and out. Let's go to my room."
Quinn noticed how serious Kurt was and just nodded and followed him to his bedroom.
Quinn sat down on his bed and Kurt placed his desk chair in front of her. It was time to tell her the truth. The whole and complete truth.
Kurt let out a long sigh and looked at Quinn right in the eye.
"Quinn... do you know anything about concentration camps?"
Quinn looked genuinely confused and curious.
"Concentration camps?"
Okay. So the moment of truth had finally arrived he was going to tell Quinn everything.
"Well... you know that my father despises the Jews." He waited until Quinn nodded to go on. "Well... he decided to convert fields into concentration camps. These are fields that were made to accommodate Jews. They are ruled by my father, and his soldiers are the ones taking care of the camps. The Jews are forced to work nonstop and they starve them. After a while they just... they kill them. Simple as that."
Quinn was gaping. Kurt knew she couldn't believe what he was telling her. And then something flickered in her eyes. Disgust.
"Wait. Are you telling me that you've been busy because you have been murdering people?" Quinn looked disgusted just by that thought.
"What? No! Quinn, no! It's... It's quite the opposite."
"What? The opposite? I don't think I understand... I'm quite confused actually."
Kurt sighed and shifted uncomfortably on his chair.
"I'm... helping a family of Jews. I am getting them out of the concentration camp. I met the older son and we became friends and he asked for help and I knew I had to help him." Quinn was starting to smile a bit when Kurt said what erased that smile immediately. He just said it without thinking. "And I think I am falling in love with him."
