After all, both of them hadn’t expected to end up at City Hall Saturday morning to sign a marriage license. But they did. They exchanged vows with teary eyes and broad smiles. And when Blaine left late Sunday night both of them left one another in a much better place than they had been when Blaine had arrived Friday night.
Kurt had caught himself staring at the simple white gold band on his left hand more than once over the past week. He had found himself wearing a dopey grin and distracted from his work more than once.
Kurt was at work now, he bringing up a rack of clothes when his phone started to ring. Kurt pulled it out of his pocket and smiled when he saw the caller ID.
“Hey Dad. I’m at work right now so I can’t really talk.” Kurt shifted his phone between his ear and his shoulder as he maneuvered the rack around a corner.
“Kid, I got bad news.” Kurt stopped in the middle of the hallway his mind flashing with the worst possible scenarios.
“Is everyone okay? Carol? Finn?”
“No, they’re fine. Kurt, Blaine’s been in an accident.”
Kurt clutched his phone tightly to his ear. “What kind of accident? Is he, is he—“
“He’s still alive kid. A truck hit him, and you know his station wagon. He’s a lot better than he should be. He’s in surgery right now to stop some internal bleeding and after than they’ll fix his broken leg. He wasn’t conscious when they brought him in. But the MRI they did didn’t show any serious head trauma. Just a concussion.”
“I’m leaving. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“I know. I already transferred some money into your bank account with that emergency deposit slip.”
“Thanks dad.”
“I’ll see you when you get here sport.” Burt hung up the phone and Kurt stared blankly at the wall across from him.
“Hummel! Are you just going to stand there all day?” His boss yelled down the hall and Kurt snapped out of it and pushed the rack as fast down the hall as he could.
“I’m leaving. I’ve got to go home. Blaine’s been in a accident and I have to go.”
“Who’s Blaine?”
“My husband.”
--------------
Kurt was sitting on a two-hour flight to Columbus, the first flight to Ohio from JFK. In the four hours that he had to wait for the flight to start boarding, he had been on the phone with his dad and Tina, who had agreed to come pick him up from the airport and drive him straight to the hospital.
Kurt hated waiting so far away. His dad told him that Blaine was going to be in surgery while they fixed both his internal bleeding and his broken leg. And when Kurt had gotten up in the air Blaine had only been in surgery for six hours.
The two hour long flight was unbearable. Kurt wasn’t able to talk to his dad who was sitting in the waiting room at the hospital with Cooper, who had helped Blaine sneak out to New York just that weekend.
Tina was waiting for him when he landed and Kurt was grateful that she didn’t bombard him questions like any one else would have done. Kurt spent most of the car ride there on the phone with his Dad. Blaine apparently was just getting out of surgery, and was being placed in ICU until he woke up and could see the extent of his head trauma.
Kurt toyed with the band on his finger, trying to focus on the memories of the last time he saw Blaine. Blaine had been crying and laughing at the airport when Kurt dropped him off. Kurt couldn’t think of a time when he had been more in love with Blaine. He remembered standing just outside of security with Blaine, before he left. They kept kissing and giggling, not wanting to leave each other, but knowing that everything was going to be okay. They would see each other in a month for Christmas and Blaine would come back out to New York for the rest of his break. They both laughed at the shocked looks on their friend’s faces they knew they would get when they told them at Christmas, because they had decided to wait until they were both in Lima to tell everyone. Kurt pictured the look of bliss on Blaine’s face as he was heading to security and told him, “I love you, husband.”
Now all Kurt could see was Blaine bloodied in broken after some dick in a pick-up truck careened straight into his boyfriend’s car. The bastard hadn’t even been drunk, just plain careless.
Two hours Kurt sat in that car with Tina while they drove to Lima Memorial. Eight hours of just trying to get to Blaine as fast as he could. Ten hours since Blaine had been sent to the hospital because of one of Lima’s Neanderthals. So the moment that Tina parked at the hospital Kurt was flying out of the car, running straight for the ICU.
When Kurt got there he head straight for the nurse’s station.
“I’m here for Blaine Anderson, he was admitted earlier today.” The nurse at the desk looked up at him carefully.
“Are you family?” the nurse asked and Kurt breathed a sigh of relief.
“Yes.” He breathed.
“How are you related?” The nurse started typing in the computer to look up Blaine’s room information.
“I’m his husband.” The nurse stopped typing and turned back to Kurt, her face drawn tight.
“I’m afraid I can’t let you see him sir.” Kurt stared at her in shock.
“What do you mean?”
“Ohio State doesn’t recognize gay marriages ass legitimate, legal marriage. I can’t let you see him, because according to Ohio law you’re not technically family.”
“No!” Kurt yelled. “We have a marriage license! I stood up in front of a judge with him and said I do! He’s my husband!” Kurt felt a hand placed on his shoulder, but Kurt shook it off as he stared at the woman in shock.
“Sir, I’m afraid that according to the state of Ohio, you aren’t.”
“You have to! Please!” Kurt begged the nurse.
“I’m afraid I can’t. You’ll have to wait in the waiting room.”
“Come on bud.” Kurt turned around and saw his dad standing behind him. “Wait with me in the waiting room. Blaine’s mom said she would be back down soon from his room.”
Kurt allowed himself to be steered into an uncomfortable chair and Burt sat down next to him.
“You wanna tell me when the two of you went and got married?”
“This last weekend. Can we not talk about that right now?”
“Yeah, sure kid.” Burt wrapped his arm around Kurt’s shoulder “Blaine’s going to be fine.”
“I can’t believe they won’t let me see him.” Kurt sobbed and before he knew it Burt was pulling him into his arms as he cried.
