They never learned about the origin of the letters imprinted in their skin in school. They never were told about a selfish French man by the name of Alexander Dupree who begged a witch in the late 1600's for power. Everyone just assumed their soul mates were from the work of God or for some, the work of the goverment but it was neither.
Alexander Dupree was born poor, was raised poor, lived poor and died poor. At the age of 20 Alexander made his was from France to the beginning colonies of America where he submerged himself in the studies of witchcraft in hopes for finding a way to bring himself from his spot on the bottom to the reigning spot at the top. At the age of 22 he brought a serum to the home of a women by the name of Esmeralda who was a known witch in hopes of her help in turning it into a love serum. She refused to help calling the fate of love to precious to be tampered and for 6 months Alexander begged and pleaded until the gothic looking women agreed in a attempt to rid herself of the rat like man but only with the agreement that in return he would grant her one favor in return when the time was right.
When exposed to the blood stream the gel like substance reacted with the skin and with the magic, placed the name of the most compatible person on the persons wrist. Alexander placed it in foods and sold it with the claim of it being the voice of God, moving along from settlement to settlement until one day he was approached by a graying women who claimed to be the young witch Alexander had used to make his living off of just months earlier. Alexander sent the women away but every where he went she would appear until finally he listened to her story.
She claimed to be his soul mate and that because she had helped him create the power to find love she could no longer live with out him or else she would be denying her own powers. Alexander scoffed at the thought of marrying a witch, an old hag at that and sent the women away but not before she was able to curse him to eternal poverty and loneliness. Every hand in the world would be tainted with silver lettering of the first and last initial of their soul mate and only with true loves kiss would they come to find happiness making it nearly impossible to find the love the world seekd. Those who had been exposed to Alexander's work no longer had the full name of their soul mate on their wrist and in a angry haze they called witch and hunted him down and hung him along side the other accused of black magic.
As generations were born the story became just a legend that was forgot by many and soon the theory of soul mates became just a way of life. It was seen almost as law and no one dared to break it as they searched through out the world for the kiss that would expose a whole name on their wrist. No one until Kurt Hummel.

Hi! The idea seems nice enough, but I've spotted some mistakes (punctuation and grammar and spelling). You could look for a Beta Reader who can help you with that and I'm sure that it will be even better :)
