"Thanks Gee ... y'know, you should get out there and let this little fella soak up some of that lovely sunshine." Kurt said, gazing down adoringly at Gina's 8-month-old baby bump.
"How many times, Kurt? It's a girl! And if it's not, it's being sent back!" Gina snapped. "And I don't need sunshine, I need alcohol ... and a cigarette ... and to be able to see my toes again!"
"Aww, I'm sorry honey ..." Kurt pouted and rubbed the small of her back. "All be over soon though, huh?"
"Hmph." Gina grumbled, leaning back gently into Kurt's hand as he continued to massage her back. "Seriously though, remind me again why you have to be gay? Because your hands are about to make me pregnant all over again."
"Oh, shush." Kurt laughed. He followed Gina's gaze as she craned her neck to see through the large glass windows of Kurt's office to her own desk in the foyer. Two fairly nervous-looking people were waiting to be seen to. "You've got company."
"Correction - you have. No-one ever comes here to see me." Gina huffed.
"Ah, more interviewees?"
"Bingo!" Gina said, waddling slowly towards the door. "That's four of the five candidates here now. I'm guessing the other must be a no-show. Top resume." She said, nodding towards the papers she'd placed on Kurt's desk moments earlier.
Kurt took the front sheet and placed it to the bottom of the pile without even looking at the name printed at the top of it.
"OK, honey - give me a couple of minutes to put on my best 'Me boss, you slave' facade and then show them in, would you? And then do me a favour and GET SOME LUNCH!"
"Ugh ... food." Gina grumbled as she stalked out of the room with a heavy sigh.
Kurt felt bad for his assistant. They'd become such good friends since she'd starting working for him just over eighteen months ago, and he was terrified at the thought of having to cope without her for the following nine. Her unplanned pregnancy had been a huge shock for them both, and although the father was still in the picture, Kurt got the feeling that if Gina could turn back the clock, she'd have run away screaming the moment she'd laid eyes on him rather than be stuck now, heavily pregnant and with absolutely no idea what the future held for her or her unborn child.
A couple of minutes later, the door opened again.
"OK, so I lied - the fifth guy did show. And he is ca-yute!"
Kurt jumped up from his seat to get a clearer look at the heads of the candidates waiting outside, suddenly remembering he was meant to be nonchalant and not at all psychotic-looking in front of the potential employees. He sank gently back down and craned his neck again with wide eyes. "Which one?"
"Oh, you probably won't see him from there - he has his back to us." Gina said, wandering back over to Kurt's desk. "Here, let me try ... keep your eye on the seat nearest to us. Oh, and brace yourself."
"What fo-"
"... BECAUSE I CANNOT TAKE CARE OF THIS BABY ALONE, KURT!!!" Gina screamed at the top of her lungs, wide-eyed and nodding frantically in the direction of the window. Kurt obliged, slightly shell-shocked and a little deaf, as all five of the professionals in the foyer gingerly rose from their seats and peered through to Kurt's office. And that's when he saw him, for the briefest of seconds before he flung himself off his chair and under the desk.
"Oh-dear-god-I'm-having-a-nightmare!" Kurt gasped under his breath before banging his head against the inside of the desk.
"Uhhh ... Kurt? You OK under there?" Gina bent down as far as she could and gave him a look of bemusement.
"Nope. I am FREAKING OUT!" He screamed, clasping his hands over his mouth. Gina looked back to the window, and once again they had a bit of an audience.
"Well, what's wrong, honeybun?" She spoke through a gritted smile.
"What is the name on the almost-a-no-show-cutiepie-back-turner's resum?"
Gina rifled through the papers on the desk. "Um ... Anderson. Blaine Anderson."
"That's what I thought. Kill me now." Kurt murmured almost incoherently.
"And that's a problem because ...?"
"Has that kid of yours wiped your memory clean off?" Kurt asked, crawling back out from under the desk and sliding as gracefully as possible back into his seat.
Gina gazed blankly back at him and shrugged.
"You know those times when I get really drunk and start reminiscing about the past, and how for one brief period in my life I had this perfect prince of a man who I've never really quite gotten over?"
"Oh god, yes ... Blainey-this and Blainey-that and ... NOOOOO?!!"
"It would appear so." Kurt sighed with his head in his hands.
"But ... how come he's here? And ... why? And ... oh god, I need to sit down." Gina flailed and sank into one of the chairs on the other side of Kurt's desk.
"I have absolutely no idea. I mean, the ad didn't mention my name specifically, did it?"
Gina shook her head frantically and her eyes widened again. "It's a sign, Kurt. It's fate, or kismet, or karma or something."
Kurt rolled his eyes. "Don't be so melodramatic."
"Says the guy who was having a mild traumatic episode under his desk a few moments ago."
"Well, whatever." Kurt huffed. "I just don't believe in all that fate, mumbo-jumbo crap - end of story."
Gina grinned back at him with that look that always spelled trouble for the two of them. "Believe it, baby ... 'cos it's happening, and if you're not humping that gorgeous creature on this very desk by the end of the day, I'll change my name to Bo-Bo and run off with the circus."
"You'd fit right in." Kurt laughed. "And there will be no desk-humping, today or any day."
"You're no fun." Gina pouted as she rose slowly and turned to leave for the second time. "But promise me one thing ...?"
"Go on." Kurt obliged.
"Let me be your Maid of Honour." She beamed.
Kurt chuckled and straightened himself up in his chair, steeling himself for what was sure to be an interesting group interview, to say the least. "I think you may have to fight it out with Rachel for that one. And please stop making this harder than it already is?!"
"Save that line for him, cowboy." Gina drawled with a wink, opening the door and gesturing for the five candidates' attention. She ushered them into the room and motioned to the chairs opposite Kurt, who had risen from his seat and was burning a hole into the floor with his eyes.
"OK everyone, allow me to introduce the gentleman you’ll be trying to impress the pants off today.” Gina smiled, her grin widening as she caught Blaine’s eye. “This is Mr. Kurt Hummel."
The other four interviewees smiled and offered their polite greetings with outstretched hands, but neither Kurt nor the startled man at the end of the line were taking any notice. Kurt gave a weak smile. Blaine simply gawped.
This was going to be weird.

Just over an hour later, Kurt graciously thanked all of the interviewees for attending and stated that he'd be in touch as he led them back into the foyer. Gina looked fit to burst as she watched them leave, unable to keep the grin from her face as she met Blaine's gaze for a moment. She mentally decided that if Kurt wasn't willing to try to get him back, she'd give it a go instead. She followed him back into his office as soon as the coast was definitely clear, bouncing gently on the spot when she reached Kurt's desk and frowning down at him as he hid his face in his hands.
"Kurt? Come on honey, don't keep me in suspense ... spill!"
Kurt groaned into his hands.
"Kurt!" Gina barked, grabbing a paper file from the desk and batting him gently on the head with it. Kurt looked up at her and grimaced.
"Watch it, missy ... it wouldn't take much for me to change this position from temporary to permanent, y'know."
"You wouldn't dare." Gina gasped.
"Try me." He replied, smiling to placate her when the worry didn't leave her face. She lowered herself into a chair with a slight groan and raised her eyebrows expectantly.
"We have a big problem." Kurt said eventually.
"Which is?"
"OK, well firstly, he was by far the best candidate for the job."
Gina beamed. "And secondly ...?"
"Hmmm." Kurt hummed, rubbing his hand along his brow.
"Kurt, please ... do you want me to go into labour right here through nervous excitement?"
Kurt looked up with a sigh, and Gina felt a pang of guilt as she detected a hint of redness and a slight shimmer in the corners of his glassy blue eyes.
"Jesus, Gee ... he hasn't changed a bit."
She tilted her head to one side and smiled gently. "And that's a good thing, right?"
Kurt rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling and whining quietly to himself.
"Honey ..." Gina said, reaching out and taking Kurt's hand across the desk. "Please talk to me - you're making me really nervous. Was he happy to see you?"
"I think so." Kurt replied slowly. "I mean, he didn't recoil in horror and run from the room when he realised I was the guy he was having to win over."
"Your break-up was amicable though, wasn't it?"
"Yeah." Kurt nodded. "We just wanted different things and our lives were pulling us in two different directions. We kept in touch for a while afterwards, but it was so hard talking to or emailing him and not being able to just reach out and touch him. Or tell him that I still loved him." Kurt turned away sheepishly. "I realised during the interview that it must be more than three years since we last spoke."
"OK, so what now?" Gina asked after a long pause.
"Well, I guess I need to call him back for a solo interview."
Gina grinned and bounced gently in her chair.
"Don't get too excited, Gee ... he may be plotting his escape from the city as we speak."
"Nah, I think he looked pretty contented when he left here." She replied, beaming again when she caught sight of Kurt's hopeful expression. "So when should I call and ask him to come back in?"
Kurt thought for a moment. "Maybe tomorrow? I don't want to look too desperate, after all."
"Will do." Gina nodded. "Oooh, Kurt - this is so exciting!"
"Slow down, sweetie - don't be marrying us off just yet. He's probably already done that with some lucky asshole, to be honest. He has a ring on his left hand."
"Which finger?" Gina frowned.
"Middle."
"Means absolutely nothing." Gina shrugged, rising slowly from her chair and plodding back towards the door. "Really Kurt, this happened for a reason. All of it did." She nodded.
"If you say so, Gee." Kurt chuckled lightly, trying not to get too excited at the thought that she might be right.
