"Blaine, man, you're so stupid."
"Thanks, Wes. I love you, too."
"You honestly think he meant it?"
Blaine, Wes and David were sitting in Wes' room. Blaine sprawled out on Wes' bed. Wes sitting at his desk and David was sitting on the floor, leaning back against the bed. Wes and David were tossing a nerf football back and forth while Blaine told them what had happened the weekend before and why he had sort of distanced himself from Kurt and was spending a lot more time with them.
"You didn't hear how he said it, though. His voice was so...final. Like he wouldn't change his mind. Ever and.."
"Dude, I think Wes is right. You're overreacting."
"Great." Blaine rolled his eyes, shaking his head.
"You're being an idiot. Now, go to your room, get naked, lay on his bed and when he gets back from class you'll see you worried for nothing." Wes tossed the football in Blaine's direction, hitting him in the head.
"You guys have been a great help. Thanks." Blaine stood up from the bed, holding on to the football.
"I'm serious!" Wes exclaimed. "That sex monkey wants you."
"I'm not so sure." Blaine muttered, walking to the door.
David sighed. "Blaine, seriously, don't distance yourself from him too much. If you're wrong-"
"Which you ARE." Wes interrupted.
"SHUT up." David turned his attention back to his less obnoxious friend."IF YOU'RE WRONG, you don't want to mess things up by acting weird. Also- I'm really sorry about your dad. We hate that, that happened again."
Wes nodded. "We love you, man."
Blaine bit his lip, nodding. "Thanks guys." He tossed the football to David before leaving the room.
"God. He. Is. SUCH. An. IDIOT." Wes groaned, collapsing on his bed.
David scoffed."Yes, yes he is."
"What are we going to do with those two? I mean, I can feel how much they want each other, WHY can't they?"
"I don't know. But, if I know Blaine at all, he's NOT going to listen to a thing I just said. He's going to make it weird-"
"And we'll have to fix it." Wes finished.
David nodded.
With a raise of his eyebrow, Wes chuckled darkly. "We should get to planning."
"Yes, yes we should."
"Hey! Our doors can lock from the outside, right?"
David smirked. "Yes, yes they do."
...
Kurt sighed as he entered his room to find it empty, yet again. Blaine was no where to be found, again. He didn't understand. He was lucky to catch a glimpse of him in the hall, or to say a quick 'Hi' and 'Bye' to him in the morning. Somehow Blaine always managed slip out just as Kurt was waking up and he wouldn't get back until after Kurt was sleeping. And when they saw each other in the hallway it was different. And when the Warblers would get together, Blaine seemed quiet. Even Nick would ask if he was okay.
Blaine would just quickly nod and say. "Ye-yeah. Just a bit tired."
Kurt sighed, placing his book bag on the floor next to his bed. He didn't understand, had he done something wrong? He spent most of his time going over the weekend, trying to find something that could have caused him to act this way? What had he done? He couldn't stand not talking to Blaine everyday, they even skipped their Tuesday night movie night that they had done since Kurt came to Dalton. Every Tuesday night they'd go get food from somewhere, bring it back to their room and watch movies. They would start with Tangled and end with When Harry Met Sally with another movie or two in between. (Usually While You Were Sleeping and Practical Magic.) "Sandy is the only woman who could have me." Blaine would explain.
Kurt collapsed on his bed, looking up at the ceiling. His eyes and nose started to burn, he felt like crying. He missed Blaine. He wanted to fix this. He was going to fix this. Even though he didn't know exactly what it was he would be fixing, he was going to fix it. He was going to talk to Blaine, ask him what was wrong.
At that moment the door opened and Blaine walked through, he stopped in his tracks when he noticed Kurt. "Oh, hey." His voice was quiet.
"Hi." Kurt sat up, sitting Indian style.
Blaine walked over to the desk, placing his bag on it.
Kurt carefully watched him, swallowing. "Bl-Blaine?"
"Yeah?" Blaine turned, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
The caramel feeling in the room wasn't the same as it usually was. This kind of tension was not pleasant. "Yo-you missed the m-movie night last night." Kurt groaned, frustrated with himself. He hated when he stuttered. Hated it. He felt it made him sound so stupid, like a child.
And Blaine was the exact opposite, he thought Kurt stuttering was just about the cutest thing in the entire world. But, he can't focus on that. Just friends. "I'm...I'm sorry, Kurt. I-" He sighed, he couldn't think of a good enough excuse. "I'm just sorry, okay?"
Kurt nodding. "Okay." He said softly. "So, do you want to do the movie night tonight?"
Blaine shook his head. "Actually I have to go. I have to meet Wes and David. "
Kurt sighed, disappointed. "Oh, okay. Have fun."
Blaine took a deep breath, he could tell Kurt was upset. It was obvious. He had a feeling about why, too. He'd been so distant, it wasn't exactly normal for them to spend so much time apart. He looked at Kurt for a moment, who leaned back down on the bed and looked up at the ceiling. He walked over and sat on his bed. "Hey,"
Kurt looked up at him, with a blank expression.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"That depends," Kurt sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. His and Blaine's knees almost touching. "Are we okay?"
Blaine could see the hurt in those piercing blue eyes and he felt his heart hurt, he had caused that. Maybe David was right, he should stop acting so weird. Blaine studied the sad face in front of him, the wrinkled forehead, the pout on those lips. The lips he wanted to just lean over and kiss. That was all he wanted. He just wanted to take Kurt in his arms, and kiss him, while telling him how sorry he was and how he'd never act that way again. He'd never do anything to cause that face again. The just wanted to love him.
"Blaine?" Kurt spoke softly, taking Blaine out of his small fantasy. "Is there something wrong? Did I do something?"
"Oh, no, no, no." Blaine shook his head. Oh, he hated this. He's torturing Blaine with that face, and the crack in his voice when he wondered if he had done something wrong. This is why Blaine couldn't be around him as much. It was hard not to want Kurt. Really hard.
Blaine sighed, and opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything the door burst open and in hopped Wes. "Let's PARTY, man!"
Kurt just shook his head, half smiling at Wes as he sat back against his headboard, crossing his legs. "So, what are you doing on this lovely Wednesday night?"
"Par-Tay!" Wes started cabbage patching.
David just shook his head. "We're going to study."
Kurt nodded, looking over at Blaine, Who hadn't moved, he was even still looking at Kurt, he was absolutely confused and didn't know exactly what to say.
"Blainers! Man, you okay?" Wes asked a he dove onto Blaine's bed. "You coming?"
Blaine nodded. "You okay?" He asked Kurt.
No.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Go with them, have fun." Kurt put on a fake smile. He wasn't happy that he found out absolutely nothing about why Blaine was acting so weird. But he could tell he already made Blaine feel bad for even bringing it up, and he didn't want to make him feel bad about going with his best friends.
Blaine just nodded again before standing up and grabbing his bag. "See you later."
"See ya sex monkey!" Wes said a he jumped off the bed, which earned a hasty "COME ON WES." From Blaine who was already in the hallway, David not far behind.
Kurt made a questioning face at Wes. "Why, for the love of everything, do you call me that?"
Wes just laughed. "You'll know soon enough."
"Yeah, that doesn't frighten me or anything." Kurt rolled his eyes as Wes walked out.
...
Wes, Blaine and David were laying around Wes and David's room, just talking. Wes had made a comment that earned a huffy "What did you do?" from Blaine.
"Nothing!"
"David! You're the sensible one, tell me, what did he do?" Blaine shot an accusatory finger towards Wes.
David just chuckled. "Nothing, Blaine. We've done nothing."
"Yet." Both of the trouble makers smirked.
That response earned Wes' arm a slap from Blaine. "Guys, leave this alone. I can't screw it up anymore!"
"You're lucky you already have a black eye, or I'd give you one." Wes rubbed his arm.
"Blaine, if you don't let us help, you'll never do anything about it." David sighed.
"There is no 'it' to do anything about. He made it clear."
"Did he say it to you?" Wes asked.
"No but-"
"Did he say "Gee, Blaine you're such a great friend and nothing else?""
"No." Blaine sighed. "But he told Carole that we were just friends and absolutely nothing more."
Wes groaned, frustrated. "Fine. Whatever. I give up. You two just live your unhappy little lives without each other." He stood up dramatically. "But DON'T come crying to me when Kurt's getting married to someone else."
David shook his head as Wes disappeared into the bathroom to take a shower. "He would be so good in movies."
Blaine nodded packing up his homework. "Yes, yes he would. He is very dramatic. Thanks for the help, well, the homework help."
David chuckled. "Anytime. We'll see you tomorrow. Oh, speaking of, Wes and I are going out with the Nick and Jeff tomorrow night. We're going to that Breadstix place. Around eight fifteen-ish Come with us!"
Blaine nodded, thinking through his mind quickly about what he had to do tomorrow. "Yeah, okay, I'll go."
"Cool. See you tomorrow. Meet us here and we'll go together."
"Okay. See ya." Blaine smiled, nodding, as he left.
As soon as he was sure Blaine was gone, Wes poked his head out. "So?"
David smirked. "Phase one complete."
This was going to work.
...
"Kurt!" Wes shouted, running to catch up with him in the hallway the next day.
Kurt stopped, turning around and smiled. "Hey, Wes."
Wes stopped as he caught up to him. "Dude! I really need your help!" He was out of breath.
"What is it?"
"I have a history exam on Monday and I am SO screwed! And since you're so good at history I thought maybe you could help me study. Tonight?" He looked at Kurt with pleading eyes.
Kurt chuckled. "Wesley, you don't have to give me the puppy eyes, of course I'll help you."
"Great! Thanks! David told Bla- OH, I mean, why don't you come around eight-ish?" Uh oh, this isn't going to work.
"Okay, Wes." He said carefully, raising a suspicious eyebrow.
Wes laughed nervously, rocking back and forth on his heels. "Awesome. Soo.." He looked around.
There was a pause. With Wes rocking back and forth and Kurt looking at him like he was an idiot. Finally Kurt broke the silence.
"Okay! Awkward moment over. I'm going to get coffee. See you tonight." He turned and continued on his way.
Wes waved after him. "Bye-bye, Kurt!"
Then Wes was greeting with a hand to the back of his head. "Way to go doofus. You almost blew it!"
"SORRY. BUT I DIDN'T. He's coming! Phase two, complete."
David and Wes highfived each other, smirking. This was totally going to work.
...
"Okay, okay!" David said, half way freaking out as he and Wes paced the apartment. Kurt would be here any minute and they had just learned Wes didn't have his History book, so Wes couldn't go on with the studying charade. Now they were freaking out because what were they suppose to do now for fifteen minutes while they waited for Blaine to show up? They could leave Kurt handcuffed to the bed for that long. Oh, didn't I mention Wes' plan? Well, it's Wes. What do you think?
"I'VE GOT IT!" Wes shouted.
"What?" David covered his ears from the loud noise.
"I'LL GO PRETEND-"
"Stop YELLING!" David interrupted.
Wes sighed. "I'll go pretend to be in the shower. When Blaine knocks on the door, you cuff Kurt to the bed." He dangled a pair of black fuzzy handcuffs back and forth.
"I told you! We're not using the handcuffs! Locking them in here together will get the job done. Let's not go overboard."
Wes let out a long dramatic sigh. "Fine!" He tossed the handcuffs into his closet.
"AnyWAY. I'll pretend to be in the shower, when Blaine knocks on the door, I'll run out and we'll go out into the hall, then we'll push Blaine in and lock the door. Then we'll leave for an hour or so. Come back and hopefully I'll have to change my sheets." He wiggled his eyebrows.
They both laughed before sharing a high five. Then there was a knock on the door. Wes jumped, giggling as he ran into the bathroom."Be cool!" He said in a loud whisper before shutting the door. David cleared his throat before opening the door. "Hey Kurt!"
"Hi, David." Kurt smiled, letting himself into the room.
"Ho-how are you?" David stuttered, shutting the door.
"I'm doing alright." He studied David carefully. David seemed to be acting as strange as Wes had in the hallway. "Where's Wes?"
"Who? Oh! Wes. He's, uh, in the shower. He wanted to take a shower real fast so he's in the shower."
Kurt chuckled. "Oh. So, is Wes in the shower?" His voice had a sarcastic tone.
"Ahh ha ha." David laughed awkwardly, pointing at Kurt, clicking his tongue against his teeth. "You're a funny guy."
Kurt just shook his head before walking over and setting his book bag on Wes' bed and laying on his stomach. "So, what are you up to tonight?"
"Oh, who, me?" David sat in the chair at his desk and crossed his leg awkwardly.
"Yes. Yes, David, you." Kurt nodded. Speaking like a kindergarten teacher.
"Oh, heh heh, I've, uh, I've got a...a date! I've got a date!"
Kurt nodded. "Oh, cool. Anyone I know?"
David shook his head. "No, no. Some girl my mom fixed me up with." He rolled his eyes.
Then there was a silence.
An awkward silence.
A very awkward silence.
Kurt sighed, finally speaking. "He sure is taking a long time."
David laughed a little louder than he should have. "Yeah."
"Wait," Kurt listened a little carefully. "There isn't any water running."
Knock knock knock.
David jumped out of his chair like a cat that had been thrown in water. "OH! I wonder who that could be."
Kurt just shook his head. "I don't know. Why don't you open it?" He gave David a 'what the hell is your problem' look.
At that moment Wes came running out of the bathroom and he and David awkwardly rush out of the door so neither boys would see each other prematurely. They were laughing obnoxiously.
"What the hell?" Kurt sat up, looking in astonishment to where the two boys once were. He wondered exactly what the hell was going on. But knowing David and Wes, there was no telling. He couldn't begin to guess. Then Blaine flashed through his mind. Unless...
...
Blaine was glad he wasn't standing any closer to the door when his two best friends came stumbling out, laughing like hyenas.
"What the-? What's wrong with you two?" Blaine took a step back, chuckling.
"Oh," Wes started as the two friends stood up straight. Biting their lips, they tried not to laugh. "Nothing. We've just got a surprise for you."
Blaine raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"Someone is here to see you." David winked.
Blaine sighed, finally understanding. "Is Kurt in there?" He put his hands on his hips.
"Kurt? Kurt who? Do you know a Kurt, David? I don't know a Kurt. Who's Kurt?" Wes said quickly as he and David grabbed each of Blaine's arms.
"Guys! What the-" Blaine protested as he was thrown into the room, the door slammed behind him and he heard it lock.
"When we get back, you two better not be acting weird anymore!" Said David.
"SEE YOU LATER SEX MONKEYS." Wes hollered.
Kurt was standing next to Wes' bed, his eyes wide, surprised. "H-hi."
Blaine straightened out his shirt as he tried to swallow his heart, which had made it's way up into his throat. "Hey."
Caramel quickly filled the room as they hear the laughter of their two obnoxious friends disappear.
Blaine laughed nervously, rubbing his neck. "I don't know what to do with those two."
Kurt chuckled, but it slowly faded as the two boys just stared at each other. "Hi." He breathed.
"Hi." Blaine just nodded.
The next few moments were really quiet, and I'm not going to lie, they were a bit awkward. Blaine made his way to the other bed while Kurt sat back down on the other. They exchanged those awkward half-smile-raised-eyebrow look. "So, how's it going?"
"It's, going." Kurt nodded. "How- how about you?"
Blaine nodded. "Yeah, it's going."
This was all very awkward. It wasn't them and Kurt didn't like it at all. Why were they acting so stupid? He didn't understand. Shaking his head, Kurt asked, "Blaine, why did it take Wes and David locking us in a room together for us to spend more than three minutes together?"
Blaine shook his head. "I.." He paused, trying to choose his words carefully. "I don't know, I guess-I guess I've just been busy?" He didn't mean for that to sound like a question.
Kurt sighed. "Blaine. What is going on? Why have you been avoiding me? I don't understand. You're my best friend, I-I miss you." His last words came out barely audible, hit bit his lip.
Those words made Blaine's heart flutter. Kurt missed him. And Blaine missed Kurt, too, he really did. He had been trying to be so careful not to cross the line that he seemed to be pushing Kurt away. He wasn't trying to, but he was scared of losing Kurt. "I miss you, too." He said, looking over to Kurt, catching his blue eyes.
Kurt gave a small half smile. The room seemed to have taken a deep breath because the air seemed a bit lighter, even with the caramel. Kurt took in the sight of his roommate for a moment, noticing his hair was a bit out of the normal, slick, dapper-ness. And he hadn't shaved today, he could tell. There was a light shade of stubble along his face. He shifted his gaze to the scratch on Blaine's cheek, noticing it was healing nicely, but then he looked to his eye, which looked a little less puffy, but it was still an awful shade of purple. "Your eye, it looks terrible." He resisted the urge to reach out and touch Blaine's cheek.
Blaine chuckled. "Thanks. It still hurts pretty bad."
"I bet it does. Have you been putting ice or anything on it?"
Blaine bit his lip, shameful. "No, not really."
Kurt sighed, shaking his head. "Blaine Anderson. Why can't you take care of yourself? I swear if you didn't have me around, you'd die." He laughed.. "I'm surprised you didn't these past few days."
Blaine smiled, looking into Kurt's blue eyes. The sadness in them was very noticeable even behind his smile. "Kurt, I'm really sorry. I just, you know, the whole thing with my dad was a bit overwhelming, and then you and Carole taking me in like that and treating me so well, I just...and then..." He trailed off, looking down at the floor, chewing on his bottom lip. He was only half making this up. Sure it was part of the reason he had been distant, but he wouldn't have been at all if it wasn't for Kurt telling Carole he didn't want to be anymore than friends. "I guess, I just don't want you to feel like you have to take care of me." Blaine hated feeling like a burden, especially to the person he loved.
"I know, I don't have to."
"Because, I know, we're just friends. Nothing more. And I don't want you to feel uncomfortable around me, like, I don't want things...I don't want things weird between us."
Kurt slowly nodded as he took in what Blaine had just said. He said so much without saying barely anything. He didn't want Kurt. He just wanted to be friends. Just friends. Well, isn't this fantastic. Kurt could feel the knot in his stomach getting tighter as the caramel thickened. "R-right. Just, just friends." He swallowed. He suddenly felt hot. tying to chill, he took a deep breath and he smiled.
"Right." Blaine looked at the floor, not noticing Kurt's uncomfortable-ness.
Kurt let out a loud sigh and stood up. "I wonder when those two are going to let us out? I need to get back and study for my own stuff." He was lying. He didn't have anything to study for, really. He just really didn't want to be around Blaine right now. The urge to cry was getting stronger as Blaine's words rang in his head.
Blaine looked up at him. "Oh, I don't know. I suppose I could call them and tell them that we're fine."
"Y-yeah." Kurt nodded.
"We are okay, right?" Blaine raised an eyebrow, noticing Kurt's body language had become tense, closed off, even. He suddenly felt awful again. Shit. What had he said wrong?
"Yeah, of course. We're perfect." He forced a small smile. But Blaine could tell there was no sincerity behind it.
Blaine just nodded and pulled out his cell phone, dialing David's number. He'd be easier to deal with than Wes. It only rang twice before he picked up.
"Hey man."
"Hey, when are you jerks planning on letting us go?"
"That depends. Are you two okay now?"
"Yes."
"Are you lying?"
Blaine just sighed. "I don't know."
"Oh," David heard Blaine's tone and understood that apparently something had went wrong. "What happened?"
"Really?"
"Oh, right. You can just tell me later. We'll be there soon. We're just downstairs."
"Thanks."
When they hung up, Blaine looked to Kurt, who was leaning against the wall next to the door, looking at the floor, obviously in thought. What Blaine couldn't hear though, was Kurt's thoughts. How they were racing about how Blaine didn't want him. How he never even had a chance. How all the nonchalant flirting has gotten him nowhere. How bad he just wanted to go home, get in his bed and cry. He couldn't bring himself to say anything.
Blaine felt it would be better if he didn't say anything else. He didn't want to make things worse. Kurt said they were okay. But somehow, Blaine just didn't believe it. It seemed like an hour before Wes and David finally came busting into the room.
"Hey sex monkeys! Should I wash my sheets now or..?" Wes earned a hard elbow in the stomach from David.
"Stop." He turned his attention to the boys in front of him. "Hey guys. How's it going?" He asked carefully.
Kurt smiled. "Fine. We're good now, right Blaine?" He really couldn't get out of the room fast enough. "See you guys later."
"Ye-yeah. We're good." He smiled. "See you later."
"Take care of your eye, Blaine." With one last forced smile, Kurt was gone.
"Fuck everything in my entire life." Blaine forcefully bashed his head against the pillow.
"What happened, man?" Wes genuinely looked confused. Obviously David didn't fill him in on the way up.
"I don't even know. I fucked something up, yet again. I think I'm going to lose him, you guys. Even as my friend."
"What happened?" David asked.
Blaine just sighed. "I don't know! We were talking and I think it was started to get better, then I said something else and suddenly his whole body language changed and we're back to square one. You saw, he couldn't get out of here fast enough."
David sighed. "I just don't understand. You two are so perfect, and you both act like such idiots around each other. How could you possibly not want each other?"
"We're not wrong here, Dave." Wes said. "They're just being idiots." He turned his attention to Blaine. "And if you two don't get the straightened out before graduation, I'm going to do it for you!"
Blaine shook his head. "Wes, you guys have to STAY OUT of this. You're making it worse. I want to fix this, too. But I don't know how. I keep screwing it up." His head was started to pound, which was causing his eye to hurt. He put his hand over it and sighed.
"Fine, Blaine, fine." Wes put his hands up. "I'm out. Whatever."
"Thank you." He said hastily.
"Have you told Kurt what you're planning on after you graduate?" David asked carefully.
"He knows I want to go to NYU."
"Does he know you got in?"
Blaine bit his lip, shaking his head. "No, I haven't told him."
David groaned. "Man, you promised you'd tell him!"
"That was before all of this happened with my dad and us."
"Yeah, but you got the acceptance letter like a month or two ago."
"Stop, please, I can't handle THAT right now on top of this." Blaine rubbed his forehead.
"Fine, man." David sighed. "You want to watch a movie or something?"
Blaine just nodded.
...
What none of the guys realized was that they had an audience. Kurt was standing right outside of the door. He had left his bag in the room and was coming back to get it when he heard Blaine say that he had fucked it up. Which made him stop and listen.
...
