Blaine put his broom aside and went to the counter, ‘’Hello, welcome to Hair and Things, how can I help you?’’
The woman gave him an evil glare ‘’I’d like to get a haircut,’’ she said slowly, ‘’and I want you to do it,’’ she added. Blaine blinked ‘’okay, that can be arranged yeah, you want it now? Or are you here to reserve a date?’’
‘’Now please,’’ she said, sounding fairly demanding.
Blaine guided her to a chair and started finding his tools, ‘’okay, anything particular you want?’’
‘’Shorter,’’ she said, ‘’but not over my ears, what’s your name again?’’
‘’Blaine Anderson Ma’am’’ He said.
‘’Well Blaine Anderson, I’m Lauren Zizes,’’ She said and Blaine stiffed, Lauren Zizes? ‘’Haven’t I heard that before?’’ he answered without thinking, and started to move his fingers through her hair.
‘’You might,’’ she said ‘’I’m Rachel Berry’s manager,’’ she said casually. Blaine gulped. Rachel Berry was almost as big a thing as Kurt Hummel on Broadway, her voice was legendary.
before Blaine could add anything Lauren continued ‘’I’m actually send out in the field you know, to find miss Berry a new hair dresser, she kicked the old one out, and she won’t settle for anyone, unless it’s someone I’ve found for her. So now I’m bound to visit every hairdresser in New York just to please her ridiculous demands.’’
She sighed and Blaine realized that he’d stopped moving, and quickly continued working. He felt dizzy. Oh. My. God. Could this be his chance? To get to work on Broadway, he wouldn’t be singing of course, but still…
He shook his head lightly, every hairdresser in New York she’d said? That ought to be hundreds of men and women, and he definitely wasn’t the best on the marked.
‘’Still,’’ he then said, ‘’you’re lucky to have the job that you have, a lot of people would kill to get it,’’
‘’yeah,’’ she said, ‘’I’d just wish I’d get to be Kurt Hummel’s manager, he’s a lot easier I hear, not that he isn’t a diva too, but at least he doesn’t throw things around’’ Blaine froze at the name, it was weird to hear someone talk so casually about him.
‘’maybe you will one day,’’ he said a little shakily and smiled. She smiled back and seemed less scary now.
‘’You know what Blaine, I like you.’’ They spend a moment of silence, until Lauren asked; ‘’do you sing?’’
Blaine’s eyes widened, ‘’a little, why?’’
‘’Sing for me,’’ she simply said, and then Blaine didn’t really have a choice but to sing, so he ducked his head and started singing
Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I'd do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse
He felt the heat rise to his cheeks, this was odd, why did he need her hairdresser to sing to her? Didn’t she hear Rachel Berry sing almost every day, that had to be better than this? Nevertheless he kept on singing.
Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright?
If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright
With you?
It might not have been a very cheery song, but it was the first song that had popped into his mind, and she seemed to actually like it, swaying her head.
Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I'd do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be cheating on you
It's the wrong time
She's pulling me through
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse
Is that alright?
If I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright?
If you don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright?
If I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright
Is that alright
Is that alright with you?
no…
Then silence, and Blaine quickly finished up, and held up a mirror so that Lauren could see her hair. ‘’Pretty,’’ she just said, and he didn’t know if she’d meant the song or the hair. Then turned to him, ‘’maybe you’ll hear from me, but that’s only a maybe.’’
She paid him, and Blaine watched her stunned as she walked out the door.
Sebastian stepped out of the storage room, and gave him a weird look, ‘’what was that about?’’
Blaine shrugged, keeping his eyes on the door.
The days went by, but Blaine didn’t hear from Lauren Zizes, ‘’she’s probably forgotten about it,’’ Sebastian said one day, and Blaine, no matter how much he disliked Sebastian, agreed with him. Until the unbelievable happened. It was evening and they were just about to lock up when one Lauren Zizes stepped into Hair and Things. ‘’Congrats Blainey,’’ she yelled, ‘’you’ve won!’’ first Blaine couldn’t speak, he grew unhealthily pale and then he just turned around, almost hitting Mercedes in the face and hugged the closest person, which unfortunately turned out to be Sebastian. Then an awkward scene of apologies happened, till Mercedes hugged him and told him how proud, and a little jealous, she was.
Then Blaine turned to Lauren, a goofy grin on his face, ‘’when can I start?’’
‘’Yeah, that’s the thing; Miss Berry kinda needs you in 15 minutes,’’
Blaine’s jaw fell, ‘’what?! Why didn’t you say so?’’ He yelled, ‘’come on, let’s get a cap!’’
Blaine couldn’t sit still in the car, and Lauren constantly had to tell him to. But this was like a dream come true, he’d get to be backstage, and he’d probably earn a lot of money, and he just might get to see Kurt Hummel. That last thing made his stomach curl into a ball of excitement.
They arrived few minutes later, and there were already loads of people outside, ready to get their tickets for tonight’s performance of Wicked, with Rachel Berry in the leading role as Elphaba. They went in one of the many backdoors, past the information board, past some changing rooms, and there, In a large room with a golden star on the door, by a large mirror, sat Rachel Berry. Her skin were already colored completely green, and she were only waiting for her hair to get done.
Lauren pushed Blaine into the room, and closed the door behind him, leaving herself on the other side. Rachel jumped at the sound, and turned around, ‘’who are you?’’ she asked, sounding more than a little annoyed. ‘’I, I’m Blaine Anderson, I’m here to do your hair,’’
she then turned around again ‘’you’re late,’’ she said, ‘’get started!’’
Blaine quickly hurried over, glad that the tools were already there, He quickly filled her hair with black extensions and beaded it down one side. He was almost finished as the door went up.
Blaine spun around, and saw Kurt Hummel’s head Peep in, ‘’Rachel, mind if I come in? There’s something we need to talk about, I can make it quick.’’ Blaine felt his heart accelerate, what should he do? Okay Blaine, stop starring, he told himself, and then turned back to Rachel’s hair. ‘’Sure come in, I’m done in a minute anyway, do you mind Blake being here?’’
‘’It’s Blaine.’’ Blaine heard himself say.
‘’Sure whatever, ‘’ Rachel said, turning back her attention to Kurt, who were now in the room, dressed in his Fiyero outfit. They talked about some acting stuff for tonight’s performance, and Blaine was careful not to look up from Rachel’s hair, trying not to think of the guy leaned against the wall, only a few steps away.
With a last touch of hairspray Blaine finished up, ‘’all done,’’ he said, and Rachel stood.
‘Thank you, we’re off,’’ she said and stormed out the door, Kurt hurried after her, but before leaving he turned around and looked directly at Blaine, ‘’nice to meet you Blaine,’’ he said and then disappeared before Blaine could get to answer him.
‘’you too,’’ Blaine whispered, and took a deep shaky breath. This was going to be hard.
The following nights nothing special happened, apart from Blaine Working on Rachel Berry’s hair, and glancing at Kurt whenever he got the tiniest chance to do it, so yeah nothing special.
Mercedes constantly asked questions: ‘’what does it look like, what’s Rachel Berry like, can you get me some tickets? Or some autographs?’’ to which Blaine answered ‘’pretty, snobbish, no and no.’’ Wes wasn’t that thrilled with the idea of Blaine working on Broadway, but mostly because he now earned more money than Wes. Sebastian was probably the least thrilled, his plan about getting in Blaine’s pants had somehow gone to his head, and he was fiercer than ever. Blaine was happy that he only saw him when he was in the salon to talk to Mercedes.
But things did change a little one afternoon, where Blaine, again, was styling Rachels hair, and listening to her complain about some janitor or something, when Jessie, kind of the Boss of the set, came into the room and plucked the comb out of Blaine’s hand, ‘’stop what you’re doing, and go help Kurt, he’s got a hair crisis,’’ he then started combing Rachel’s hair.
Blaine’s jaw almost hit the floor. What? He couldn’t do that!
‘’are you sure? I…I mean…’’
Of course I’m sure, now go!’’ he hissed and Blaine went out of the room, carefully closing the door behind him. OhMyGod! What was he going to do, he couldn’t go in there! He couldn’t style Kurt Hummel’s hair! Even less talk to him! What would he say? What if he by accident spilled all his secrets about being completely obsessed with him? He couldn’t do it, but he had to, so he collected all his courage, went down the hallway, turned and found himself at the door that said Kurt Hummel with golden letters. He quietly pulled open the door. ‘’Oh, hi Blaine,’’ Kurt smiled at him. To Blaine’s luck he was fully dressed in tonight’s costume and looked like always; fantastic.
‘Um, hi, Jesse told me you were having some sort of, uh, crisis?’’
‘’yeah, it’s the hair, I must have slept on it badly last night, It just won’t sit, and my usual hairdresser is out of town and I hear that you’re pretty good so,’’ Kurt smiled at him, looking completely and utterly stunning, and Blaine felt his cheeks heating up. ‘’I’ll try,’’ he then muttered.
Kurt turned to face the mirror, and Blaine stepped to stand behind him, lifting his hands, and carefully started running his hands through Kurt’s hair. Wow, it was really soft. Okay he could do this. Kurt sighed and relaxed a little, letting his shoulders fall, and then Blaine just didn’t think too much and just started talking, ‘’it’s hard working here, isn’t it?’’ he asked keeping his gaze safely on Kurt’s hair.
‘’Well, yes’’ Kurt replied ‘’but it’s my dream, is has always been my dream as long as I can remember, and I’ll keep doing it until they kick me out.’’
Blaine looked at him through the mirror, and for a second, before Blaine embarrassed looked down, their eyes met, and Blaine felt the butterflies flutter inside his stomach. ‘’It was my dream too once you know, to be an actor on Broadway’’ Blaine said, trying to think of something else than those eyes and the soft hair beneath his fingers.
‘’Really? Then why did you become a hairdresser?’’ His smile fated ’’ I’m sorry I shouldn’t ask that.’’ He looked down.
‘’No it’s okay, um, it’s was my father, he didn’t approve of it, he didn’t approve of me being a hairdresser either but he was a bit more fond of the idea. I wanted to stand up to him, but I needed a place to live until I had enough money to move here. He’s a bit homophobic you see, so I think it was the idea of me being gay he didn’t like rather than the idea of me doing musical theatre. He just wanted me to build cars, ‘a real son’ he said.’’ Blaine paused and breathed in.
Kurt looked up at him ‘’that’s so sad,’’ he then said, ‘’you never thought of trying again, get into theatre?’’
Blaine shook his head, ‘’it’s too late for that now, I have zero experience in theatre, I’ve never taken song lessons or anything,’’ he said.
‘’that shouldn’t stop anyone, but I have to say it won’t be easy,’’ Kurt sounded weird, why did he care? He was famous and a star and fantastic, and here Blaine stood, whining over his life to him like some idiot, he mentally kicked himself. ‘’that’s okay, I like doing hair too, it’s kind of my plan B, but it’s okay for living, and now I get to work here, that’s just as amazing.’’
Kurt smiled up at him, and this time Blaine let their eyes lock a little longer, and he smiled back.
‘’um,’’ Kurt then said ‘’we have 2 minutes left,’’
‘right,’’ he quickly finishing up, ‘’there,’’
Kurt looked in the mirror ‘’whoa, thank you Blaine you’re my hero,‘’
Blaine blushed, and watched Kurt Leave for his performance, feeling better than he’d felt for a long time.
‘’See you around?’’ he asked?
‘’Sure!’’ Kurt smiled at him, and the door between them slammed shut.
From that night on, Blaine always looked forwards to the nights where Kurt’s hairdresser was out of town, and he got the 15 minutes alone with the star. He learned a little more about him, that he had a bird at home called Pavarotti, that he cared a lot about fashion, but also heavier topics like he was bullied at school and in high school. ‘’I was teased because of my voice, they thought I was a girl, and when they found out I wasn’t it got a lot worse.’’
Blaine knew how that felt to be bullied, but still didn’t quite know what to say to that, ‘’personally,’’ he said, while reaching for the hairspray, ‘’I adore your voice.’’
‘’Thank you,’’ Kurt said grinning up at him, ‘’I could really have needed a friend like you back then,’’ he then said, and Blaine blushed for a millionth time, how could he keep on doing this to him? Right, friends he could settle with that, he’d never dreamt of getting this close to Kurt anyway, so why was he asking for more?
