“God Kurt, these are orgasmic,” Santana moaned as she licked icing off her lip.
“They are pretty good,” Kurt mumbled looking down at the cupcakes with a frown.
“Seriously,” She grinned. “These need to go out front now.”
“They aren’t my recipes,” Kurt argued back.
“That doesn’t matter. If you’re putting them out first then they are yours,” She shrugged and leaned back. “Put them out.”
The day after having dinner at Blaine’s he had spent all afternoon practicing some of the recipes that he had found in Blaine’s room.
The recipe that he had found was for a sangria cupcake. The butter cake base was baked with apples, grapes, orange zest, and some red wine and topped with red wine butter cream frosting and topped with a dried apple chip and grape.
They were absolutely beautiful.
With a sigh, Kurt stepped away from the tray and walked out into the shop where several middle aged women were waiting.
“I am so sorry ladies!” He grinned at the women who smiled brightly back. “We were just in the back.”
“Not a problem dear, we were just trying to decide what treats we were in the mood for,” One of the women motioned to the case.
“Well we have a new kind if you want to try it,” Santana stepped out holding the tray of cupcakes. “Sangria.”
“Oh goodness they are beautiful!” The women gasped and Kurt had to fight his frown. “I’d love to try one!”
“Of course,” Santana wrapped a few in wax paper and handed them over as she rung them up.
“I tell you what,” One of the ladies smiled as she took a bite. “This is so much fun! What a creative idea!”
“Thank you,” Kurt’s smile felt fake.
“We’ll tell everyone! How many do you have left of this batch?”
“Six more!” Santana’s eyes lit up.
“Well box them up!” The woman laughed. “We will tell everyone you know about these amazing cupcakes!”
“I’m not making anymore,” He snapped as soon as the happy women left. “This is all kinds of wrong! It’s not our recipe.”
“No, but this is the forty bucks we just made,” Santana waved the cash in his face. “I know these are your mom’s recipes and they are amazing but you need to try something new. Be fun! Be original!”
“No, Blaine is fun and Blaine is original. We’re just the assholes who stole from him,” Kurt scowled.
“Running a business is competition. We have to compete with every single other bakery in this city. Just because he is cute doesn’t mean anything. Choose your business or your little crush,” She snapped back.
“God Santana,” Kurt rolled his eyes. “Be a little less of a bitch.”
“I’m being honest,” She replied shortly. “Suck it up and go make some more.”
With a sigh Kurt glared at her and went back into the kitchen.
The guilt remained throughout the entire time he baked up several more trays of cupcakes and lined them up in the case. Santana smugly told him that they were a huge hit and every single customer raved about them.
“I’m going to go get lunch,” Kurt announced in the middle of the afternoon. “Want anything?”
“Bring me some pasta,” She waved him off, flipping through some paperwork.
He pulled on his jacket and made his way over to the little Italian shop, Leo’s. He stepped up to the front counter and smiled at the middle aged woman standing there.
“Well hello sweetheart!” She grinned brightly. “Time for lunch already? Do you want your usual?”
“Yes Ma’am!” Kurt grinned as she scribbled down his order.
“Alright, one Italian veggie sub and one order of chicken alfredo,” She stepped to the side, handing the slip of paper to the cook. “It’ll be ready soon. Want your tea while you wait?”
Kurt nodded and took a paper cup, filling it with tea.
“So, pasta and a sub and you still look that good? You have to tell me your secret!” The sudden voice startled Kurt into spinning around and almost running into Blaine.
“Hi!” Kurt blurted. “I’ve never seen you here!”
“Ah yes, well I normally just eat a sandwich or something from home but I was kind of wanting to go out today,” He shrugged. “Plus this place looks really good.”
“It is, the subs are life changing,” Kurt couldn’t fight his smile. “But I mostly come for Miss Toni here.”
“Sweetpea, you are far too charming,” Toni laughed from behind the counter. “It is true about the subs then.”
“Well with all of these recommendations I’ll have to have a….Italian sub,” Blaine leaned back to look at the menu against the back wall.
“Good choice!” Toni wrote down the order. “Take a seat boys, it should all be out in about seven minutes.”
“How’s this one?” Blaine asked, filling up a cup of iced tea and pointing out a rickety table.
“Um…that’s fine,” Kurt nodded and sunk down into a chair.
“So, how’s business?” Blaine asked, taking a sip of tea.
“It’s going really well!” Kurt looked down at his hands.
“Out of curiosity, why Elizabeth’s?”
“It was my mother’s name,” Kurt smiled softly to himself.
“Oh?” Blaine leaned forward. “Was she in the business as well?”
“Actually, she passed away when I was eight,” Instantly Blaine’s face widened and his mouth dropped open.
“Oh Kurt, I’m so sorry,” Blaine reached over and took his hand.
“It’s fine. We used to always bake together before she was diagnosed with her cancer,” A small smile quirked at his lips. “All of our recipes are my mom’s.”
“It’s a beautiful way to honor her,” Blaine grinned back and squeezed his hand.
“Your lunches are ready!” Tori called out and held up two plastic bags.
“Well, back to work!” Blaine took a bag and gave Kurt a little wave before walking out. Kurt smiled back shyly and walked back to Elizabeth’s with a slight skip in his step.
“Here,” He handed the bag to Santana who was making grabby hands.
“My pasta isn’t in here,” She complained. “And when did you start eating Italian subs?”
“What?” Kurt spun around as Blaine stepped into the shop.
“Hey Kurt! I think I grabbed your lunch by mistake,” He held up the bag which Santana snatched out of his hands. “You think I would have realized that the bag was twice as heavy but I was never good at thinking when I was hungry.”
“Understandable,” Kurt laughed.
Santana held up the bag for him to get and Blaine reached over the counter to grab it before freezing, eyes locked on the dessert case.
“Sangria?” He frowned, looking closer.
“Oh,” Kurt paled when Blaine’s face hardened.
“Let me guess, there’s fruit baked into it,” His voice was faint. “Red wine butter cream?”
“Blaine…I know what you’re thinking,” Kurt took a step forward.
“I’m thinking it’s my recipe. From the cake, to the frosting to the fucking apple chip,” His eyes snapped up, flashing. “I wrote this.”
“Blaine…”
“Did you get it when you came over for dinner?” His eyes widened in understanding. “Oh…when you went to the bathroom? I can’t believe this.”
“Wait!” Kurt grabbed his elbow as he turned to walk out. “I didn’t want to sell them.”
“Well I’m so glad you didn’t, oh wait! You did,” He let out a short laugh. “And you told me they were all your mother’s recipes. She must be real proud of you.”
Kurt felt his body go numb and Blaine wrenched his elbow free, storming out of the shop.
“Overreaction,” Santana mumbled but looked a little embarrassed.
“Shut the fuck up!” Kurt snapped back and shoved past her into the kitchen.
