Kurt was, and always had been, a hopeless romantic.
He recalled listening to lessons in his classes with wide eyes and open ears whenever teachers spoke of his favorite topic; soulmates.
A soulmate, they would say, was whom a person was destined to be with. Although either person would not be perfect, they would be perfect for each other, and the idea of that made Kurt long for the day when he would meet his perfect-for-him other half.
The problem was, Kurt was a bit impatient. He wanted to know who his soulmate was so they could start their lives together. A name had yet to appear on his wrist though, and whenever it did, he knew there was no guarantee that his soulmate would just pop up shortly thereafter.
That didn't make the day that his soulmate was revealed any less exciting for him. He was concerned when he woke one morning in the middle of his sophomore year and felt his left ring finger tingling and burning in the strangest way. He'd had parts of him fall asleep before, but it had never felt like that. On closer inspection he found faint red markings along the side of his finger that faced his middle finger. In that moment, he didn't know whether to be joyful or fearful. He had been waiting for this moment for quite some time and it was definitely exciting, but also nerve wracking. He would soon see the name of the person he was meant to be with for the rest of his life.
And as the red scars formed into his finger, he soon came to see that the name of the man he was meant to be with was Blaine Anderson.

Kurt sighed as he examined the name of his soulmate on his finger. The red had faded to more white color, tinged a bit with light pink. It was a few weeks into his senior year, and he still hadn't seen heads or tails of, nor even heard about, Blaine Anderson. Sometimes, he thought things were hopeless, but he always had to remember what his father had reminded him; the world is bigger than Lima, Ohio.
He hoped that perhaps when he moved to New York he would finally find his soulmate there. The thought made him sigh and smile as he thought of what Blaine may be like. Surely he would be incredibly handsome. Probably filled with a love of music that Kurt shared, perhaps even a love for fashion. Maybe he'd be a designer, a Broadway star, or a musician. Kurt didn't know anything for certain about the man other than his name, but he could speculate. Regardless, he knew they would fall in love and live happily ever after.
Some people didn't believe in the 'love at first sight' that some soulmates claimed to have had. Some believed you just had to learn to love your soulmate, or that if you really wanted to, you could go be with someone who wasn't your soulmate. Regardless, it was a universal idea that somehow, people would feel tied to their soulmate in some way that wouldn't have much of an explanation. Kurt believed that he would instantly fall for his soulmate when he met him, and he didn't dream of wanting to spend his life with anyone else.
He finally stopped with his daydreaming and headed to his first few classes, going back to his locker to swap out a few books. When he turned the corner he bumped into the person who was rounding the corner as well. Kurt let out a gasp as he ran into him and leaned down to pick up a book that had dropped out of his hand.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't really watching where I was going," he said with a laugh.
"No, you weren't," the boy responded irritably and Kurt stood back up straight, looking down at the slightly shorter boy. He wore dark, tight jeans and a leather jacket over a green tee. His golden hazel eyes were rimmed in black eyeliner and looked up at him in the same irritation that his voice conveyed.
"Well, you don't have to be rude about it. I said I was sorry," Kurt said with a faint frown, raising his eyebrow. "Are you new?" He asked, his eyes staying trained on the other boy's. Wow. He didn't know if it was the eyeliner or if his eyes just...stood out like that.
He watched the boy roll his eyes before a smirk fell on his lips. "No, I've been going to school with you my whole life and you finally ran into me. Yeah, I'm new."
Well, he's pleasant. Kurt thought, sighing a little. "Well, I'm Kurt. If you need me to show you around or anything, just let me know." He noticed a change in the way the boy was looking at him, like he was looking at him like he was a long-lost friend. He didn't have time to question it before the boy was walking away from him and Kurt was left to his thoughts of wondering why he was so locked on those honey colored eyes the whole time.
