Kurt was having a bad day. First, he woke up late (and he never woke up late) because of a power outage and he rushed to work with no time to stop for coffee. Then, he found out that Tina called in sick and couldn't finish the costumes by today, so he had to take those on tonight. Next, Rachel threw a fit on stage complaining about how she could not connect to her character due to sexual frustration, ripping her dress throughout her entire tirade. And last, but not least, when Quinn was moving her make-up station, she ran into Kurt and three different colors of blush fell onto his grey skinny jeans. And he had just had them dry-cleaned.
So, maybe 'bad' wasn't the word for it. Kurt was having a horrible day.
With his iPhone in his hand, Kurt was looking up ways to remove make-up from fabric when he saw Blaine in the doorway with one hand behind his back, and a look on his face that asked for permission to enter. Kurt let out a huge sigh and shrugged.
"I noticed that you weren't exactly having a good day," Blaine remarked, walking towards Kurt, "So when we took a break, I got you this. It looked like you could use a pick-me-up." And Blaine presented him with a large, nonfat mocha and a small piece of coffee cake.
Kurt was astounded. "Blaine, you really didn't have to do this." Blaine shrugged. "I appreciate this so much. How could you tell I wasn't having a good day? I was backstage the entire time. And how did you know my coffee order?" Kurt took the contents from him and began to indulge.
Blaine smiled, "Well, when I saw you running late this morning, which you never do, you weren't wearing that radiant smile that you always have. Your hair is flatter than normal so I assumed, either blow-dryer shortage or power outage." Kurt blanched at that. "Don't worry, you look adorable. And as for the coffee order... well, I can't give you all my secrets, can I?"
Kurt snorted, then sipped his drink. "Is that your way of trying to seduce me?"
"I'm not, believe me. You would know if I was." Blaine smiled mischievously. "But isn't this worth a kiss on the cheek, at least?"
Kurt snickered. "Nice try. I hear them calling you onstage, Blaine. Don't lose your job trying to impress me."
"Damn," Blaine sighed. "A man can dream." He walks out of the room with a smile to head onto the stage and leaves Kurt with the reddest cheeks. Almost, immediately after Blaine leaves, Sebastian Smythe, the actor for Bernardo, waltzes in and leans on the vanity.
Kurt rolls his eyes. "Is there something I can entertain you with?" he asked, sounding frustrated. He did not want to deal with him right now, not when his day was finally looking up.
"You know there is, baby, but not while we're working," Sebastian sneered.
"What do you want? Shouldn't you be onstage? Or on a prairie somewhere?"
"Funny. No, I'm here because I see that you're getting really comfortable with Hazel Eyes over there. He's got the hots for you, sweet cheeks, and you don't seem to mind it."
"Blaine and I are friends," Kurt sneered back. "But even if we were more than that, I don't see why you're so concerned. It has nothing to do with you."
"Aw, friends. That's cute. But do you think he'd feel the same if he found out about you and me?" Sebastian questioned with a cocked eyebrow.
Kurt was shell-shocked. "You wouldn't."
"Wouldn't I? It turns me on how much you underestimate me, Hummel."
Kurt laughed a humorless, dry laugh. "Knowing what you did, I don't see how you can still look me in the eye. I will not let you ruin my life again. Leave. Now." But Sebastian just moved closer and placed his hand on Kurt's cheek.
"Don't. Touch. Me." Kurt whispered, with as much hate as he could.
Sebastian smiled as he removed his hand. "If my memory serves me correctly, you didn't seem to mind it." And exited the room.
Kurt, in frustration, swiped everything off of the counter and crawled into a little ball against the wall, his hands in his hair and an ache in his chest.
You will not let him get the best of you, Kurt, he thought to himself. One incident doesn't define you.
But the more he said it, the less he believed it.
