Once every few months or so, my mum suddenly remembers that she actually has a son and decides to call me. I dont really expect her to, since she never actually remembers my birthday.
Its a surprise that she even remembers my name.
"Hey Blaine, sweetie. How are you?" she asked on the other side of the phone line.
"Im great," I lied, not that my mum cared. I could tell her that a huge purple octopus was eating me and she still wouldnt have done anything about it.
"Thats great. What about school?"
"Its absolutely fantastic. Tomorrow were going to go and visit the giant pineapple. I cant wait!" I said while rolling my eyes at my ridiculous lie.
"Thats nice honey," she said, which is funny because there is no giant pineapple in the country. Like I said, she never pays attention to anything I say. If I died, she would realize it a year to late.
"I know. Its going to be super duper."
"Well, I have to go now; I have a lot of work to do." The lie was apparent in her voice. Unlike her, I actually paid attention to what was being said. I also knew that Sam had called her. Alex being her new husband –my step father technically, although I only thought of him as a home wrecker. I mean, he was the guy who had gone out and ruined my whole family. Although the blame couldnt be put on just him, my mum left on her own free will. She didnt even consider taking me with her. One night I had watched her go to bed like usual and then in the morning she was gone. I couldnt exactly blame her for leaving because if I could, then I would leave too.
Anything to escape from here.
As soon as I put the phone down, it started to ring again. When I looked at the caller ID, I saw that it was in fact Kurt who was calling. I didnt pick it up because I knew that he was just going to say crap about me, so I just let the answering machine record whatever he was going to say.
"Hey Blaine. Its me Kurt. I know that youre probably listening to this as I say it, so please will you pick up? Please?" Kurt asked and there was a sort of desperation in his voice that made me want to pick up the phone, but something stopped me. I wanted to hear what he was going to say.
"God Blaine, you really are stubborn. Just like always. I just wanted to say that Im sorry, okay? Just really, really sorry. I know its pretty stupid now. I know that this probably doesnt even matter to you, because its too late, but please try and forgive me, okay? Please? Anyway, I was wondering how youre doing now. Is your head any better? Well, Ill see you tomorrow, okay? Bye Blaine."
After I had listened to what Kurt had said, I rewound the message and listened to it again and again. I kept wondering why. Why was Kurt doing this? What brought on his sudden change of heart? Why was he being so nice to me? The question lingered as I went to bed. I had so many questions, each one as confusing as the last.
I turned around onto my side and slipped my hand underneath my pillow. My hand brought out the photo. Although it was dark, I could still recognize the outlines of the people in it. It had been taken a very very very long time ago. Before everything thing changed, before my mum left, before my dad started drinking and before everyone hated me. It was a time when everything was normal and everyone was happy. But that was so long ago, I cant even remember what it felt like.
"Hey, Blaine, wait up!" Someone reached out and grabbed onto my wrist. I turned around and practically collided with Kurt.
"Okay, Kurt. Seriously, what the hell?"
"I just wanted to talk to you and I thought the best way to do that is to ride the bus to school with you," he said as we stood at the bus stop.
"So what happened to the rule where I had to always walk a few meters in front of you and never talk to you?"
"Well, that was before, okay? Now everything is different."
The bus pulled up and we both got on. Instead of sitting a meter away from me, Kurt sat right next to me. He didnt say anything more to me, until the bus started to move.
"See, that was before and this is now," he said, turning around so that he could talk to me properly.
As the bus came to each stop, more and more people got on, and at each stop, I waited for Kurt to move away from my side. But each time he didnt.
"Hey Kurt, why are you sitting next to him? God, come sit next to me," Josh said, patting the empty seat next to him, enticing Kurt to go and sit next to him. Enticing Kurt to leave me. Kurt made a move to leave, but something made him change his mind and he sat back down next to me.
"Nah, Anderson and I are best friends now." Kurt waggled his eyebrows suggestively in the direction of Josh.
"I bet you are."
"Yeah, sure we are. Best friends forever." He put his arm around me, accidentally bumping my bruise.
I cried out in pain and Kurt looked over at me.
"Shit. Im sorry! I didnt mean to do that Anderson."
"Why do you do that, Kurt?" I asked him, rubbing my bruise lightly.
"Do what?"
"Why do you change whenever you talk to anyone else? Why do you change so quickly? Why do you care about what everyone else thinks about you?" I questioned.
"Anderson, not everyone else is like you."
"See, there you go again. First, it was Blaine and now its Anderson again. Jeez Kurt, make up your mind," I said getting up to go and find a different seat. And it was funny to think that it was me who was leaving him.
"Come on Kurt, whats up with you? Why are you talking to Anderson outside of class? What happened to the rules you laid out for yourself and him?" Puck asked as they walked into the boys bathroom. It seemed like they spent more of their time in the bathroom than they did anywhere else.
"So I was talking to him. So what? It doesnt mean anything."
"Yeah, you say that it doesnt mean anything and I believe you, but everyone else doesnt. Theyre starting to think that you and Anderson are like friends or something," Puck tried to explain to Kurt.
"Hes just my social studies partner, okay? How the hell can you expect me to work on our project, if I cant even talk to him?"
"Well, I heard you were sitting next to him on the bus this morning. What in the world were you thinking exactly?" Puck questioned Kurt like he was a moron.
"So I sat next to him and I talked to him. Whats so wrong about that? Is it a crime? It is illegal or something for me to do that?"
"In high school, yes, it is a crime. It was only a few days ago that you said that he was a loser and a freak. What happened to that?" Puck just had to throw that in Kurts face.
"Yeah, well, I changed my mind. Hes actually pretty cool once you get to know him."
"Oh my God, Kurt! You do no associate Anderson and cool in the same sentence. It just doesnt happen okay?" Puck tried to explain.
"Well I just did, okay? And what does it matter to you who I talk to and sit next to on bus? What does it matter to you?" Kurt turned to Puck and questioned.
"Kurt, weve been friends for a pretty long time and I think you should have nothing to do with this guy. Hes a loser Kurt. A loser. And you dont hang out with losers."
"Okay," Kurt flatly stated.
"Promise me, Kurt. I just dont want to see you hurt by anyone."
"I promise, Puck."
"Good. Now lets stop talking in the bathroom. Its kind of gross, dont you think?"
"Yeah, you go ahead. Ill catch up with you later." Kurt said.
"What are you doing?"
"Im going to take a piss. Its what the toilets are there for."
"Oh…okay." I heard Puck leave the bathroom, but I also heard footsteps coming near me. Kurt came and sat down in front of the cubicle that I was in; I didnt know how he knew that I was in there.
"Blaine, Im sorry," he said and I wasnt sure whether I should answer back or not.
"Whatever for Kurt? What was I expecting you to do? Say that youll be my best friend forever?" I said bitterly.
"Its just that…"
"What is it Kurt? Why do you even bother spending time with me?" I angrily asked.
"Maybe, not everyone is as brave as you Blaine." Kurt quietly replied.
