I've never written a love song
that didn't end in tears
Maybe you'll rewrite my love song
if you can replace my fears
I need your patience and guidance
and all you’re lovin' and more
When thunder rolls through my life
Will you be able to weather the storm?
There's so much I would give ya, baby
If I'd only let myself
There's this well of emotions
I feel I must protect
But what's the point of this armour
If it keeps the love away, too?
I'd rather bleed with cuts of love
than live without any scars
Baby, can I trust this?
Or do all things end?
I need to hear that you'd die for me
Again and again and again
So tell me when you look in my eyes
Can you share all the pain and happy times
'Cause I will love you for the rest of my life
This is my very first love song
That didn't end in tears
I think you re-wrote my love song
For the rest of my years
I will love you for the rest of my Life
Blaine sniffed, his heard slipping back down into his gut when he noticed no movement from his fiancé’s still form. “You have to wake up baby. They keep saying you might have brain damage. You have to wake up and prove them wrong. You’re the smartest person I know and I love you so, so much Kurt. You’re going to come back, okay? You’ll come back, we’ll get married and we’ll be ok again, yeah? Just wake up,” Blaine stood up and wiped his eyes before he leant down and kissed Kurt’s unresponsive lips. “Oh, and happy Christmas baby.” He whispered and walked out, never seeing how Kurt’s lips moved slightly, pursing minutely in a response to Blaine’s kiss.
A while later Blaine’s sitting with Rachel and Cooper cross-legged on the floor, looking over the articles about them and the weeks since the accident when the faint blips from the nurse’s station where Kurt’s heart and brain activity are being monitored pick up pace. They barely register it before the head nurse is running past them, calling. “Mr Hummel!” Delight colouring her voice. Blaine and Burt glance at each other before they’re up, chasing after her. She and Kurt’s doctor are already by Kurt’s side, checking recordings and making notes.
“He’s coming out of it.” The doctor says, grinning.
Both men gasp and Blaine takes Kurt’s right hand as Burt goes around the bed and takes Kurt’s left.
“Come on son, we’re here.” Burt says, eyes wide and full of tears.
“You’re ok Kurt, we’re here baby. Open your eyes and come back to us.” Blaine says, his voice cracking.
Kurt’s eyes move behind his lids and Burt looks at Blaine excitedly as Kurt’s fingers clench around his.
“B…Bl…” Kurt mumbles, his lips moving slowly.
“Come on Kurt.” Burt says.
“Blaine,” Kurt says and his eyes open slowly. He looks at his fiancé first then his dad. “Dad.” He says and Burt bursts into tears. His eyes widen slightly and Blaine feels him shift back, slightly scared.
Blaine leans down and nuzzles his love’s neck and Kurt turns and smiles at him. “I missed you, I missed you, I missed you.” Blaine says, wrapping his arms around Kurt and kissing him deeply.
The doctor coughs gently and Blaine looks up at him. “If I could assess Kurt, Mr Hummel?” He says, smiling fondly and Blaine composes himself enough to smile sheepishly and sit down, never taking his hand from Kurt’s.
Kurt smiles up at the doctor and he smiles back. “Ok, I’m going to ask you a few questions to check everything’s in working order. Now, what’s your name?”
“Kurt E Hummel.” Kurt responds automatically.
“Your date of birth?”
“May 27 1994.”
“Your parents’ names?”
“Burt Hummel, Elizabeth Hummel and Carole Hudson-Hummel, my step-mom.” Kurt adds with a small smile and Burt looks over to see her and Finn in the doorway, both with tears in their eyes.
“And his name?” The doctor says, gesturing to Blaine.
A mischievous glint appears in Kurt’s eye for a split second before Burt grips his hand and gives him a ‘don’t you dare’ look as Blaine’s face slips from happy to confused, bordering on heartbroken. He sighs and looks at Blaine smiling. “Blaine Hummel, my fiancé.”
“Great, Kurt. Now I’m going to do some tests. I’ll have to ask you to step outside, take a breather and contact the rest of your family.” The doctor smiles at Kurt and directs the last part to Burt, Blaine, Carole and Finn who start to file out.
“Wait,” Kurt says, looking between them all. “How long was I out for?”
Carole steps forward and places her hand on his cheek soothingly. “It’s Christmas Day sweetheart.” She says and Kurt’s mouth drops open, his gaze locks with Blaine who smiles at him and blows him a kiss before they leave.
The doctor walks out about 15 minutes later and smiles. Blaine stands up first and walks over. “How is he? Can we see him?” He rattles off the questions almost at once, the words falling over each other.
“He’s ok and yes, you can. He remembers everything of the morning before the accident right up until looking back to smile at you but he doesn’t remember the accident itself. This is normal and it’s not something I’m worried about. He could start to remember over time and will need support for that, or he could never remember it. His brain function is normal and he is reacting normally. The only thing I am concerned about is the use of the hand he used to protect his head. He’s reported some jarring in the muscles and that hand seems to be weaker than the other. This could be something that will go away over time with physiotherapy. He will need some to rebuild the natural muscle wastage that has occurred over the time he’s been here. It could, however be a long term effect and he, and you all will need to be prepared for that, only time will tell. Otherwise he is happy and healthy. He just needs a lot of love and attention, which I’m sure he will get.” The doctor motioned to the door and they nod.
Blaine went in while Burt and Carole chatted to the doctor and he gave them more information.
“Hey you,” He whispers, letting the door click closed and takes up his usual seat on Kurt’s right side. “How are you feeling?”
Kurt regards him for a second, unsure of how to feel. His last memory is of turning to smile at his fiancé and suddenly he’s woken up into a world where he’s lost weeks. He’s missed his wedding and his fiancé is acting like he was taking a nap. “Like I’m in the Twilight Zone. What’s wrong with you?”
Blaine sighs and takes Kurt’s hand, threading their fingers together as he’d done a million times before. “I’m coping, Kurt. I spent weeks in that corner crying, hating the world, trying not listen to reports about the famous singer Blaine Hummel’s fiancé and just be Blaine. Now you’re awake it just seems like a waste to carry on being that sad, angry guy. You’re alive. I’m happy.”
Kurt’s eyes widened. “It’s still sinking in how much time I’ve lost. So you had your breakdown while I was asleep. That’s,” He looks Blaine up and down. “Good, I guess. I love you.” He says, at a loss for anything else and he just does.
Blaine smiles back. “I love you too and yeah, I did. Lately I’ve been dealing with wedding re-planning, the thing with Brody, going back to work and just existing.”
Kurt smiles at the thought of Blaine going back to work and channelling his energies and passion into songs, then his brow furrows. “What thing with Brody?”
Blaine looks at him and he realises what he just said. Oh. Shit. “Uhh. Brody was behind the wheel? I’m sorry Kurt.”
“What?” Kurt grates out.
“The thing, the trial. He’s paid for his stupidity, Kurt.” Blaine says helplessly, he’s screwed up now. Kurt’s memories will come back and he’ll be stuck with the images of glass, blood and dark eyes the way Blaine is.
Kurt glares at him for a second and Blaine sees the heat and wonders at the irrationality of the whole thing. “DAD!” Kurt screams and Blaine winces. Burt barrels into the room and Kurt stabs a shaking finger at Blaine. Blaine stands and Burt drags him into the hallway to interrogate him while the doctor and Carole rush in to calm the newly reawakened man. He looks back at Kurt before his view is blocked and sees blue eyes filled with tears and betrayal, not for him, for the friend he always knew that man wasn’t good enough for and the time he’s lost. Something shifts in Blaine’s chest.
“What did you do?” Burt whispers at him, glaring.
Blaine closes his eyes and rubs a hand over his face, looking around as if the walls will give him some kind of answer. “I screwed up, okay? I told him Brody was behind the wheel. I mentioned the trial and he asked. I’ve never lied to him so I told him and he freaked out.”
Burt rolled his eyes and patted Blaine’s shoulder. “It’s ok, we’ll figure it out.” He said and both men looked up when the doctor and Carole walk out and hold the door open for him.
“He needs to talk to you, sweetheart.” Carole said and smiled at him.
Blaine walked in, the door shutting behind him and stared at Kurt as the auburn haired man took a deep breath and opened his mouth to sing.
I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you
I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly but darlin' can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Darlin' can't you please see through me
Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you
You taught me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
You taught me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
Blaine steps forward, tears rolling down his face. “You heard me.” He whispers, knowing silly mistakes are forgotten and the truth is the words he sang to his love before.
Kurt waits until he sits down and olive skin touches his, Blaine nuzzling up to him before he speaks. “I always do, Blaine.”
They sit together, cuddling while their family watches with proud eyes.
