Kurt fidgeted a little as he sat on the hard plastic of the waiting room chair. He was unable to keep still as he waited. He felt liked he’d been sat there for hours, though in reality it could of only of been 20 minutes at the most. He hated hospitals, he hated the atmosphere, the smell. He hated the waiting rooms the most. It was the middle of the summer and it was hot out. There where moms and dads there with little children who where sat playing with toys. A old man sat there coughing and spluttering. Kurt wanted to ask if he was okay but the mad looked Kurt up and down and scowled as if he was something nasty on the bottom of his shoe. Kurt took out his phone and tired to look busy. “Kurt Hummel?” said a deepish voice from above him. He looked up to find a doctor there. He gave the young boy a kind smile and Kurt gave him one back trying to seem as confident as he could “could you like to follow me?” he asked.
Kurt stood up clutching his shoulder bag. He followed the man down a bleak looking corridor and into a a room where the walls where plastered with health posters. It was small and made him feel almost claustrophobic there was a small corner filled with colorful plastic toys for children just like the ones the kids where playing with in the waiting room. “mr hummel do you have someone with you today?” Asked the doctor peering over a chart type thing in his hand. Kurt’s attention returned to the man. He shook his head a little “my step mom and dad have work and my step brother has a football game” he hadn’t even told them the appointment was today, his dad was there for the tests but he’d not even told him they’d called yesturday for him to find out the results. The doctor nodded and looked back at the chart. He was starting to worry a little now. Kurt took a deep breath and looked down at his skin tight black jeans. He was trying to distract himself any way he could. “Mr. Hummel I’m afraid it’s not good news” Kurt looked straight back up at him “It’s cancer”
Everything stopped. Everything. It was like all the air had been whacked out of his chest by a brick. The doctor was still talking, he could hear one or two words but everything else went silent. It was like the sun stopped shining. Like the birds stopped tweeting. Like the world just stopped and Kurt was the only one left in nothingness. All that was there was him and the uncomfortable black chair.
They talked for a while after that but Kurt couldn’t take much in. It was all just noise to him. He didn’t understand what it meant. The doctor asked him if he did a couple of times and each time he’d said yes but he couldn’t get it into his head. What do I do now? he thought to himself How do I tell people? should I? He felt numb with fear. He swallowed and pulled up outside his home. He didn’t get out the car though he pulled out his phone and scrawled down his contact list. Dad, should he call dad? no how could he tell him something like that. Not after mom. He had to eventually of course he knew that but not yet. He carried one scrawling but couldn’t call anyone.
He sat in the car and carried on staring out the window. He didn’t know how long he’d been sat there. He must of fallen asleep because a few hours later he was woken by a tap on the window. Finn was stood there looking very confused. Kurt climbed out and looked at him “dude are you okay?” asked the tall boy. Kurt just stared blankly in his direction and shook his head. “Um… do you want a drink of something?” he asked. Kurt just burst into tears. Finn looking terrified put his hand on his shoulder “dude please don’t cry, what’s going on? are the guys on the football team messing with you again?” he asked. Kurt just shook his head and sobbed into Finn’s top. He’d never felt more scared or weak or alone in his life.
